X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy applied to the study of three sicilian painted artworks

This paper reports on three X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) studies of ancient Sicilian painted materials: a 13th century canvas from Cerami (Enna, Italy), the Muqarnas wood ceiling of the 12th century Palatine Chapel (Palermo, Italy) and a delicate early 20th century viola d’amore, the property of the Conservatorio di Musica “Vincenzo Bellini” in Palermo. Information about the pigments and preparation layer mixtures used as well as inferences regarding various past painting techniques emerged from the interpretation of spectra and data analyses.

The naves of churches and the halls of noble palaces. The paintings that decorate these ceilings are precious evidence of the wide cultural connections that linked Sicily to Europe and to the Mediterranean area. The paper reports the results of research aiming at the development of a workflow for the creation of a digital atlas of these ceilings. Digital representation overcomes one of the main obstacles to the study, the preservation and the dissemination of these works of art, i.e. the traditional dichotomy between photographic images and drawings. Il progetto di Andrea Sciascia, per il complesso parrocchiale di San Giacomo Apostolo in Ferrara, terzo classificato nell’ultima edizione (sesta) dei concorsi promossi dalla CEI, interviene in un’area periferica della città, interessata da profonde trasformazioni e dall’inserimento di elementi infrastrutturali viari. The domes, vaulted and flat ceilings and also the partition walls built with wood and reeds had a particular diffusion from the XVII century, in Palermo as well as in other countries of Sicily, in many regions of Italy and in the whole Europe. The consolidated constructive tradition made them one of the most appreciated and usual systems for structural frame and for the definition of interior rooms, employed both for the monumental housebuilding and for that of minor importance, also owing to the adoption of economic materials. La sépulture à char de La Tène A ancienne des “Craises” à Molinons (Yonne)

The study reports on a chariot tomb excavated in 1985 at Les Craises in Molinons (Yonne). Set in an adventitious position in the midst of a monument with three quadrangular enclosures, the grave was of an adult of undetermined sex. Despite later pillaging, the goods found in this aristocratic tomb permit a dating to the second quarter of the 5th century BC, and an unusual cultural attribution, on the frontier in the Parisian Basin between the Jura culture to the south and the Marne-Moselle culture to the north.
