Waterfront e patrimonio militare: la base sottomarina di Saint-Nazaire

Isolated from its harbour by the submarine base built during World War II, Saint-Nazaire has added to its development over the last two decades, without referring to major European models. An important arts and tourist center has been built around the port zone, close to the German submarine base. The converted military structure, which is situated in an impressive public space, has been endowed with a new sense of identity. It stands out as the main element in the urban regeneration process, focusing on the cultural and tourist character of the programme and aiming to reinforce the relationship between the city and its port.

The Paper aims to contribute to reflection on the peculiarities of the cases of functional and morphological regeneration of the waterfront historic European cities. Since the identification of a range of issues common to these types of projects, some interventions are analyzed and characterized by approaches different outcomes. The growing number of projcts for floating structures or artificial islands in response to the problems of urhan congestion or environmental emergency requires a critical reflection on the prospectives and the risks implied in this new trend of urban water colonization. This paper intends to test the hypothesis thaht the value of a new and emerging issue of Architecrure can be recognized to this trend and, trhrough a comparison with a series of experiences, wants to bring to the attention of the debate a number of questions which, for exigency of synthesis, analyze in particular the morpholinguistic issues re1ated to the diffusion of this new architecture theme.
Architetture del vino. Un disegno per il territorio agricolo

L’attenzione verso le architetture del vino realizzate nel mondo ha sollecitato l’interesse per il paesaggio caratterizzato e disegnato dalla vigna; questo ha comportato l’attenzione per gli architetti contemporanei, capaci di esprimere un nuovo rapporto con il paesaggio. Il libro raccoglie gli esiti della ricerca e della didattica svolta in occasione di un workshop internazionale di progettazione architettonica tenutosi a Menfi (AG) nel 2005. L’obiettivo è stato quello di presentare le numerose esperienze prodotte intorno a tale tema e, nello stesso tempo, esprimere le esplorazioni progettuali sui temi della città attraverso una progettualità che aspira ad un nuovo disegno del territorio.

La srategia dell'intervento di riqualificazione di via della Vittoria, che attraversa tutto il centro urbano di Menfi, prevede di potenziare il ruolo degli spazi aperti, considerandoli materia di connessione tra fatti urbani diversi, sia alla scala generale urbana che a quella del tessuto della città storica. Sono stati descritti alcuni caratteri e condizioni per definire i modi di intervento: le relazioni tra spazi aperti, le possibili permeazioni, mai dirette, tra via della Vittoria e via Garibaldi (asse di fondazione della città), le unità suscettibili di trasformazione. La presente ricerca si è svolta in tre fasi distinte. Un primo biennio tra Milano, l’Università degli Studi di Palermo e sopralluoghi presso l’ex campo di concentramento di Auschwitz, centrando le attenzioni sul tema del Memoriale italiano. A questa prima fase è seguito un semestre di ricerche presso l’Universidad Politecnica de Madrid in cui sono state svolte le prime ricerche sull’IAUs (Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies, 1968-1985) e «Oppositions» (1973-1985), sopratutto per quanto concerne le relazioni fra Spagna, Tendenza italiana e Stati Uniti.
