Parent and peer attachment as predictors of facebook addiction symptoms in different developmental stages (early adolescents and adolescents)
2019
Abstract Facebook Addiction (FA) is a problem that concerns minors all over the world. The attachment bond with peers and parents has been proven to be a risk factor for the onset of FA. However, the family and peer group can have a different importance depending on the developmental period of the minor. This study examined the influence of peer and parental attachment on the symptoms of FA in early adolescents and adolescents to verify whether attachment to peers and parents predicts FA symptoms in both categories respectively. The sample was composed of 598 participants (142 early adolescents) between the ages of 11 and 17 years (M age = 14.82, SD = 1.52) recruited in the school setting. …
The extent of variation in male song, wing and genital characters among allopatric Drosophila montana populations.
2007
Drosophila montana, a species of the Drosophila virilis group, has distributed around the northern hemisphere. Phylogeographic analyses of two North American and one Eurasian population of this species offer a good background for the studies on the extent of variation in phenotypic traits between populations as well as for tracing the selection pressures likely to play a role in character divergence. In the present paper, we studied variation in the male courtship song, wing and genital characters among flies from Colorado (USA), Vancouver (Canada) and Oulanka (Finland) populations. The phenotypic divergence among populations did not coincide with the extent of their genetic divergence, sug…
Students' academic and emotional adjustment during the transition from primary to secondary school
2019
The current study examined several indicators of students' academic and emotional adjustment during the transition from primary (i.e., grade 6) to secondary school (i.e., grades 7 and 9). Specifically, the study investigated how students' engagement, achievement, and burnout, as well as student-teacher conflict, evolve together over time. A total of 356 adolescents (57.3% boys) filled out questionnaires about their burnout and their behavioral and cognitive engagement. Students' achievement was measured using standardized test scores. Conflict in the teacher-student relationship was assessed using teacher ratings. Cross-lagged models revealed bi-directional associations between behavioral a…
Cardiovascular reactivity to a marital conflict version of the Trier social stress test in intimate partner violence perpetrators
2014
Intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetrators have been categorized into two groups based on their heart rate (HR) reactivity to stress following Gottman's studies. Overall, type I perpetrators tend to show autonomic underarousal, whereas type II or reactive perpetrators present a hyper-reactivity in anticipation of stress. In this study, changes in HR, pre-ejection period (PEP), vagal ratio as well as psychological state variables (anxiety and anger) in response to stress were assessed, comparing a group of type II IPV perpetrators (based on violence reports and psychological assessment; n = 17; mean age = 37) with non-violent controls (n = 17; mean age = 35) using modified version of the T…
2018 Practice Guidelines for the management of arterial hypertension of the European Society of Cardiology and the European Society of Hypertension
2018
International audience; These practice guidelines on the management of arterial hypertension are a concise summary of the more extensive ones prepared by the Task Force jointly appointed by the European Society of Hypertension and the European Society of Cardiology. These guidelines have been prepared on the basis of the best available evidence on all issues deserving recommendations; their role must be educational and not prescriptive or coercive for the management of individual subjects who may differ widely in their personal, medical and cultural characteristics. The members of the Task Force have participated independently in the preparation of these guidelines, drawing on their academi…
Grit and self-discipline as predictors of effort and academic attainment
2018
Background: Beyond ability, traits related to perseverance, such as grit and self‐discipline, are associated with adaptive educational outcomes. Few studies have examined the independent effects of these traits on outcomes and the mechanisms involved. Aims: This study estimated parameters of a process model in which grit‐perseverance of effort (grit‐effort) and consistency of interest (grit‐interest) dimensions and self‐discipline were independent predictors of students’ science grades. The effect of the grit‐effort on grades was expected to be mediated by students’ self‐reported effort on optional out‐of‐school science learning activities. Sample: Secondary school students (N = 110) aged b…
Paradoxes and coping mechanisms in the servitisation journey
2022
Servitisation is conceptualised as product manufacturers' transition towards bundling products and services to offer customers enhanced value. Scholars have raised concerns regarding the potential challenges that firms face during servitisation, often termed servitisation paradoxes. Limited studies have explored the paradoxes experienced during the servitisation journey and the associated coping mechanisms. We utilise the open-ended essay methodology to unravel various paradoxes and coping mechanisms to address the gap. We collected data in two stages—from 69 participants in the first stage and 32 in the second stage. The study's findings reveal three broad paradoxes: the paradox of organis…
Gender and age differences in the psychosocial risk factors of workplace bullying
2017
Bullying at work means harassing, offending, or socially excluding someone or negatively affecting someone's work. Bullying affects all kinds of organizations, although organizations in the public sector are some of the worst affected. To date, no studies have examined how the combination of psychosocial risk factors leads to bullying. Using a sample of Spanish prison employees (n = 488) and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA), this study analyzed how five combined effects (role conflict, role ambiguity, social support, esteem, and work overload) lead to bullying at work. Two classification variables (gender and age) were also considered. Based on these classification variabl…
Energetically costly precopulatory mate guarding in the amphipod Gammarus pulex: causes and consequences
2003
Precopulatory mate guarding (PCMG) is thought to have evolved as a male mating strategy in species in which female receptivity is limited to a short time. It is common among crustaceans, and energetic costs associated with PCMG are thought to promote size-assortative pairing in such species, although direct evidence is lacking. Using both field surveys and laboratory experiments, we assessed the energetic costs of PCMG in Gammarus pulex and investigated their possible causes. Energetic costs were measured as differences in lipid and glycogen reserves. In field-collected samples, size-corrected lipid and glycogen reserves of paired males were both significantly higher than those of unpaired …
«I Can?t Get the Practical Hours» : Care, Course Choice and Role Conflict Among Student-Mothers in Higher Education in Scotland
2021
Mothers who study at a higher education level face many challenges that traditional students do not. They have less time to study and must negotiate their different commitments and responsibilities, which includes taking care of their children. This article reports on qualitative research conducted with a small group of mothers that study at a prestigious university in Scotland to understand their experiences of belonging to the space of the institution and their perceived learning challenges. Four interviews and one focus group were organised, voice recorded and their transcripts were thematically analysed and engaged with the research questions. It has found that they experience limited s…
