Clinical research focused in European adult women with minority diseases: Do we try hard enough?

We analyzed the European countries participation in clinical trials addressing to new drug development focused on rare diseases in women comparing to more prevalent diseases as breast cancer. Participation was not associated with type of healthcare system neither socio-economic features, but it was associated with population size. Protocol ratios focused on breast cancer vs. orphan drugs and rare diseases was 15:1 and 9:1, respectively, mainly focused on ovarian cancer. Protocol number was insufficient to evaluate the success of Regulation (EC) 141/2000, it is necessary to increase the scientific quality and the number of really new molecules.

ABSTRACT Aim: To compare local control and toxicity in non melanoma skin cancer treated with electrons and Leipzig applicators. Methods: We evaluated 60 patients (pts) with non melanoma skin cancer treated using electrons and Leipzig applicators (microselectron-HDR afterloader). The lesions were: 30 basal cell cancer, 17 squamous cell cancer, 10 basosquamous cell cancer, 1 dermatofibrosarcoma, 1 keloid, 1 histiocytoma fibrosus. Median age was 54 (25-84). Esophagectomy is often connected to postoperative pulmonary complications with a high mortality rate [1, 3,4]. From 1980 to 1985 we treated 19 patients after esophagectomy in our intensive care unit. Nine patients (47%) died of pulmonary complications. From the literature [3] and from our own observations we came to the conclusion that the first pulmonary changes start during the operative procedure.
