Silene crassiuscula (Caryophyllaceae), a new species from Sicily
2015
Silene crassiuscula,, a new species of S. sect. Dipterosperma, is described and illustrated from North-Western Sicily. It is an annual halophyte with succulent growing on carbonatic or calcarenitic rocks of coastal stands. From the morphological point of view , S. crassiuscula appears to be similar to the species belonging to the S. colorata group especially to S. nummica, from Sardinia, from which it differs in several features chiefly regarding the habit, leaves, inflorescences, floral pieces and seed micro-morphology. An analytical key of the taxa belonging to this section is also provided.
In viaggio con Stravinsky, gli ultimi anni di tournée e le "Choral-Variationen" sul canto natalizio Vom Himme hoch..." (1955-56)
2022
The text takes up in organic form the speeches held on June 3, 2021 as part of the conference "Stravinsky in/and Italy. Day dedicated to the memory of Igor Stravinsky in the fiftieth anniversary of his death (1971-2021)" and the subsequent round table. The first paragraphs have the character of a reconstruction of the life of Igor Stravinsky ‘as an old man’, dealing above all with the theme of the trips to Italy made by the Maestro together with his wife Vera de Bosset, the conductor Robert Craft. The second part of the text is about the "Choral-Variationen on the Christmas carol “Vom Himmel hoch...”, written in 1955-56 to be performed with the Canticum Sacrum in the St. Mark’s Basilica in …
Intrahepatic myeloid-cell aggregates enable local proliferation of CD8+T cells and successful immunotherapy against chronic viral liver infection
2013
Chronic infection is difficult to overcome because of exhaustion or depletion of cytotoxic effector CD8(+) T cells (cytotoxic T lymphoytes (CTLs)). Here we report that signaling via Toll-like receptors (TLRs) induced intrahepatic aggregates of myeloid cells that enabled the population expansion of CTLs (iMATEs: 'intrahepatic myeloid-cell aggregates for T cell population expansion') without causing immunopathology. In the liver, CTL proliferation was restricted to iMATEs that were composed of inflammatory monocyte-derived CD11b(+) cells. Signaling via tumor-necrosis factor (TNF) caused iMATE formation that facilitated costimulation dependent on the receptor OX40 for expansion of the CTL popu…
Shared determinants between virus-infected and trinitrophenyl-conjugated H-2-identical target cells detected in cell-mediated lympholysis
1976
Infection of H-2-identical mice with either lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) virus, vaccinia virus, or paramyxo (Sendai) virus resulted in the generation of specifically sensitized cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL). CTL generated in vitro against 2,4,6-trinitrophenyl (TNP)-conjugated syngeneic stimulator cells were specifically cytotoxic for TNP-conjugated H-2K (D) region identical targets. Both LCM and vaccinia-induced CTL, however, were found to be strongly cytotoxic towards TNP-conjugated, H-2K(D) region-identical target cells. In contrast, Sendai virus-induced CTL did not lyse TNP-conjugated, syngeneic target cells. Inhibition experiments using cold targets suggested that shared antigenic…
Physiology and Pathology of Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome
2010
Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) occurs when ovaries primed with follicle-stimulating hormone/leuteinizing hormone (LH) are subsequently exposed to human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). The ultimate pathophysiological step underlying this clinical picture is increased vascular permeability (VP). With the administration of hCG, the expression vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and VEGF receptor 2 (VEGFR-2) mRNA increases significantly rising to a maximum coinciding with peaked VP. Immunohistochemistry shows the presence of VEGF and VEGFR-2 proteins in the granulosa-lutein and endothelial cells of the entire corpus luteum. These findings suggest that the syndrome can be prevented…

Sequence of vascular patterning and gene transcription in the chick chorioallantoic membrane (15.1)
2014
Introduction: The chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) is a well-established model of both vasculogenesis and angiogenesis; however, little is known about the genetic control of vascular patterning in the CAM. Methods: Using recent advances in chicken genomics, we investigated the relative expression of 84 angiogenesis genes during the growth and remodeling of the CAM microcirculatory network. Chick embryos, cultured ex ovo, were studied during embryonic development days (EDD) 8-14. UV laser microdissection was used to harvest capillary plexus and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd order conducting vessels for qRT-PCR analysis. Results: Two transcription peaks were observed between EDD 8 and 14. The first p…
Stretch-induced Intussuceptive and Sprouting Angiogenesis in the Chick Chorioallantoic Membrane
2014
Vascular systems grow and remodel in response to not only metabolic needs, but also mechanical influences as well. Here, we investigated the influence of tissue-level mechanical forces on the patterning and structure of the chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) microcirculation. A dipole stretch field was applied to the CAM using custom computer-controlled servomotors. The topography of the stretch field was mapped using finite element models. After 3 days of stretch, Sholl analysis of the CAM demonstrated a 7-fold increase in conducting vessel intersections within the stretch field (p 0.05). In contrast, corrosion casting and SEM of the stretch field capillary meshwork demonstrated intense …
Nucleoprotein-specific nonneutralizing antibodies speed up LCMV elimination independently of complement and FcγR
2013
CD8(+) T cells have an essential role in controlling lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) infection in mice. Here, we examined the contribution of humoral immunity, including nonneutralizing antibodies (Abs), in this infection induced by low virus inoculation doses. Mice with impaired humoral immunity readily terminated infection with the slowly replicating LCMV strain Armstrong but showed delayed virus elimination after inoculation with the faster replicating LCMV strain WE and failed to clear the rapidly replicating LCMV strain Docile, which is in contrast to the results obtained with wild-type mice. Thus, the requirement for adaptive humoral immunity to control the infection was dep…
