2016

2015

Richard of Venosa’s De Paulino et Polla is a latin “elegiac comedy” of the XIIIth century. Line 325 of the text («Per Salvatorem mundi qui cuncta gubernat») is inspired by a rich and various hymnological tradition, whose principal source is Boethius, Cons. Phil. III, carm. 9,1 (O qui perpetua mundi ratione gubernas), incipit who knew a big diffusion in medieval poetry.

2018

The Order of St. John always paid special attention to the publications documenting its military activities, in order to justify both its mission in defence of the faith and its requests to Christian princes for human and material resources. This editorial investment was particularly strong after the dramatic sieges of Rhodes (1480, 1522) and Malta (1565) by the Ottomans. In 1619, just a few years after the Order’s new landing in Malta, "Il glorioso trionfo della sacrosanta religion militare de’ nobili, valorosi e invitti cavalieri di S. Giovanni Gierosolimitano" was published in Italian and Spanish. This article analyses the narrative strategies used in this text within the context of coev…

Rivoluzione o Provvidenza?

2022

In this paper, the value that Antonio Rosmini’s works preserve is studied in order to understand the philosophical premises of modernity as a condition for identifying the different visions of politics and the exercise of power that develop among the ideologies of the twentieth century. His reflection, rethought by Augusto Del Noce, becomes a significant moment in the context of Christian thought, because it allows us to link past and present through the background of his political vision in a philosophical key. Rosminian political meditation, compared with Alexis de Tocqueville’s analyzes of democracy, becomes a main way to connect the ideas of Catholics with those of liberals, seeing the …

The Problem of the First Belief: Group Agents and Responsibility

2020

Abstract Attributing moral responsibility to an agent requires that the agent is a capable member of a moral community. Capable members of a moral community are often thought of as moral reasoners (or moral persons) and, thus, to attribute moral responsibility to collective agents would require showing that they are capable of moral reasoning. It is argued here that those theories that understand collective reasoning and collective moral agency in terms of collective decision-making and commitment – as is arguably the case with Christian List and Philip Pettit’s theory of group agency – face the so-called “problem of the first belief” that threatens to make moral reasoning impossible for gr…

2017

Different sources (epigraphical, literary, apocryphal) can be used to analyse the Christian heretical sects connected to an enkratite movement (Enkratites, Apotactites, Sakkophoroi, Hydroparastatai, Aerians), which was characterised by radical forms of self-restraint (enkrateia). Epigraphical documents are helpful in setting these communities in the rural background of late antique Anatolia (4th-5th cent. AD). On the other side the apocryphal acts of the apostles offer important hints on social and economic ideas developed by Enkratites and throw new light on their specific Christian Weltanschauung.

Subjectivity in a therapeutic process as a predictor of psychotherapeutic success

2014

Reflections on the uniquely human dimensions of behavior over the last few decades have become a meeting space connecting different sciences. The holistic health model emphasizes the subjectivity of man. Humans are open and active, and remain in relationships with others; they relate to the world they live in and seek meaning. Subjectivity in the psychological perspective can be described in three ways: subjectivity as identity, individuality, specific experience of self; subjectivity as the ability to initiate, regulate, direct, and realize goal-oriented and autonomous activity; subjectivity as the application of one’s own system of values. Subjectivity or causality (core features agency) …
