Dominance of the first excitation step for magnetic circular dichroism in near-threshold two-photon photoemission

2012

Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) in near-threshold photoemission is measured for a perpendicularly magnetized Cs/Co/Pt(111) film with work function adjusted by Cs adsorption. For one-photon photoe ...

Magnetization dynamics in microscopic spin-valve elements: Shortcomings of the macrospin picture

2007

We have studied ultrafast magnetodynamics in micropatterned spin-valve structures using time-resolved x-ray photoemission electron microscopy combined with x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Exciting the system with ultrafast field pulses of $250\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{ps}$ width, we find the dynamic response of the free layer to fall into two distinctly different contributions. On the one hand, it exhibits localized spin wave modes that strongly depend on the shape of the micropattern. A field pulse applied perpendicular to the exchange bias field along the diagonal of a square pattern leads to the excitation of a standing spin wave mode with two nodes along the field direction.…

Angular and temperature dependence of the magnetic circular dichroism in4dcore-level photoemission from Gd(0001)

2002

We present experimental and theoretical results for the angular and temperature dependence of magnetic circular dichroism in Gd $4d$ core-level photoelectron emission from a Gd(0001) surface in both normal and off-normal directions and with azimuthal variation. Two theoretical approaches are used to model this data: a single electron theory with full multiple scattering of the outgoing photoelectron and a full-relativistic many-electron theory with single scattering only. Thermal effects due to atomic vibrations and the excitation of initial-state multiplets are also included. For normal emission, we find smooth free-atom-like angular variations in emission intensity, while for off-normal e…

Stroboscopic XMCD-PEEM Imaging

2007

Abstract This article summarizes recent results on magnetization dynamics obtained with time-resolved photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism as contrast mechanism. Time resolution is performed by a stroboscopic technique that is exclusively sensitive to reversible processes, but offers a very high time resolution only limited by the X-ray pulse width. A time resolution of 20 ps in combination with a lateral resolution of 100 nm has been achieved.

Spin and Orbital Magnetic Moments of FePt Thin Films

2006

The magnetic moments of disordered and ordered L10 Fe50Pt50 films were investigated using magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and spin polarized full relativistic Korringa–Kohn–Rostoker (SPRKKR) calculations. The measurements showed that the spin magnetic moments of Fe in both ordered and disordered films were similar with a lower value than that obtained by SPRKKR calculations. Both films however showed larger orbital moments of Fe compared to the calculations. It is suggested that the spin magnetic moment of Fe in FePt thin films was insensitive to L10 ordering.

Analyzing the enforcement of a high-spin ground state for a metallacrown single-molecule magnet

2016

We have studied element-selective magnetic properties of the hetero- and homometallic metallacrowns $\mathrm{Cu}{(\mathrm{II})}_{2}[12\ensuremath{-}{\mathrm{MC}}_{YN(Shi)}\ensuremath{-}4]$ ($Y=\text{Cu}$, Fe, in short ${\mathrm{CuCu}}_{4}$ and ${\mathrm{CuFe}}_{4}$). These metallacrowns comprise four Fe or Cu ions surrounding a central Cu ion. Using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism we have probed local symmetries, electronic configuration, orbital and spin magnetic moments of the magnetic ions. The ratio between the Cu and Fe moment of $\ensuremath{-}0.11$ is independent of temperature in the range of 15 K to 90 K. The Cu moment shows antiparallel to the Fe moment. For ${\mathrm{CuCu}}_{4}…

Electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of the ferrimagnet Mn2CoSn

2011

The magnetic ground state of the Heusler compound Mn${}_{2}$CoSn was predicted to be nearly half-metallic ferrimagnetic with a high spin polarization by ab initio electronic structure calculations. Mn${}_{2}$CoSn was synthesized, and the magnetic behavior of the compound was studied using a superconducting quantum interference device and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The experimental values were found to be in fair accordance with the theoretical predictions. The electronic structure and the crystal structure of Mn${}_{2}$CoSn were characterized comprehensively using x-ray powder diffraction, $^{119}\mathrm{Sn}$ M\"ossbauer spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, and hard x-ray photo…

Quantum simulations of toroidal electric ring currents and magnetic fields in linear molecules induced by circularly polarized laser pulses

2008

Circularly polarized laser pulses may excite state selective unidirectional toroidal electric ring currents around the axis of oriented linear molecules. These in turn induce state selective magnetic fields. Quantum simulations for AlCl show that these effects are about one or even more than three orders of magnitudes larger than those which may be prepared in oriented planar molecules such as Mg-porphyrin, by means of either circularly polarized laser pulses, or by traditional magnetic fields, respectively.

Electronic States, Absorption Spectrum and Circular Dichroism Spectrum of the Photosynthetic Bacterial LH2 Antenna of Rhodopseudomonas acidophila as …

1999

A new approach that uses a combination of semiempirical configuration interaction method and exciton theory to calculate electronic energies, eigenstates, absorption spectrum and circular dichroism (CD) spectrum of the LH2 antenna of Rhodopseudomonas acidophila is introduced. A statistical simulation that uses experimental homogeneous line widths was used to account for the inhomogeneous line width of the observed spectrum. Including the effect of orbital overlap of the close-lying pigments of the B850 ring and the effect of the pigment protein interaction in the B800 ring allowed a successful simulation of the experimental absorption and CD spectra of the antenna at room temperature. Two e…

Functional and dysfunctional conformers of human neuroserpin characterized by optical spectroscopies and Molecular Dynamics

2015

Neuroserpin (NS) is a serine protease inhibitor (SERPIN) involved in different neurological pathologies, including the Familial Encephalopathy with Neuroserpin Inclusion Bodies (FENIB), related to the aberrant polymerization of NS mutants. Here we present an in vitro and in silico characterization of native neuroserpin and its dysfunctional conformation isoforms: the proteolytically cleaved conformer, the inactive latent conformer, and the polymeric species. Based on circular dichroism and fluorescence spectroscopy, we present an experimental validation of the latent model and highlight the main structural features of the different conformers. In particular, emission spectra of aromatic res…
