Biophysical investigation on therapeutic proteins (Chaperonins, Hsp60 and CCT/TRiC) involved in human diseases

Molecular chaperones are indispensable cellular components that assist folding and assembly of newly synthesized proteins, translocation of proteins across membranes, as well as refolding and degrading of misfolded and aggregated proteins. In the last few years, innovative therapeutic strategies targeting stability and functionality of chaperones have received great attention, particularly in the field of neurodegenerative diseases. Moreover, the growing number of diseases found linked to chaperone mutations, testifies to the importance of their role in the cellular protein-quality control mechanism. The investigation of the biophysical interactions between chaperones and specific proteins …

Bivalve mollusks shells valorisation and recycling: market potentiality and novel building products

2023

Construction is a fundamental driver of the world economy, recognized as a sector that generates a great contribution to the social and economic development. At the same time, it shows an enormous environmental impact through an unstoppable consumption of non-renewable resources, a high energy consumption, and an associated atmospheric emission of pollutant. Consequently, the research and development of novel and green production processes and sustainable building materials is of paramount importance. The sustainability of materials and production processes could be improved by enhancing and reusing wastes from various industrial sectors. In this paper, the fishery sector will be analysed, …

Suffixes, Conjugates and Lyndon Words

2013

In this paper we are interested in the study of the combinatorial aspects connecting three important constructions in the field of string algorithms: the suffix array, the Burrows-Wheeler transform (BWT) and the extended Burrows-Wheeler transform (EBWT). Such constructions involve the notions of suffixes and conjugates of words and are based on two different order relations, denoted by $\plex$ and $\pom$, that, even if strictly connected, are quite different from the computational point of view. In this study an important role is played by Lyndon words. In particular, we improve the upper bound on the number of symbol comparisons needed to establish the $\pom$ order between two primitive wo…

Multilepton dark matter signals

2020

The signatures of dark matter at the LHC commonly involve, in simplified scenarios, the production of a single particle plus large missing energy, from the undetected dark matter. However, in $Z'$-portal scenarios anomaly cancellation requires the presence of extra dark leptons in the dark sector. We investigate the signatures of the minimal scenarios of this kind, which involve cascade decays of the extra $Z'$ boson into the dark leptons, identifying a four-lepton signal as the most promising one. We estimate the sensitivity to this signal at the LHC, the high-luminosity LHC upgrade, a possible high-energy upgrade, as well as a future circular collider. For $Z'$ couplings compatible with c…

Top-quark production in proton–nucleus and nucleus–nucleus collisions at LHC energies and beyond

2015

Single and pair top-quark production in proton-lead (p-Pb) and lead-lead (Pb-Pb) collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and future circular collider (FCC) energies, are studied with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations including nuclear parton distribution functions. At the LHC, the pair-production cross sections amount to sigma(t-tbar) = 3.4 mub in Pb-Pb at sqrt(s) = 5.5 TeV, and sigma(t-tbar) = 60 nb in p-Pb at sqrt(s) = 8.8 TeV. At the FCC energies of sqrt(s) = 39 and 63 TeV, the same cross sections are factors of 90 and 55 times larger respectively. In the leptonic final-state t-tbar --> W+b W-bbar --> b bbar l+l- nu+nu-, after typical acceptance and eff…

ODEPR of indium colour centres in the X- irradiated storage phosphor KBr:In

1995

The results of measurements of the magnetic circular dichroism of the optical absorption (MCDA) and optically detected electron paramagnetic resonance (ODEPR) of X-irradiated KBr :In crystals are presented. The MCDA bands and ODEPR parameters of In°(1) centers and In 2+ centres have been measured. The mechanism of the energy storage in KBr :In crystals is found not to be simply the formation of correlated F centre-In 2+ centre pairs as was assumed previously. Considerable similarities to the storage phosphor BaFBr :Eu 2+ were found for the photostimulated emission and read-out properties.

ODMR of cd impurity centers in gg irradiated BaF2crystals

1995

Abstract The magnetic circular dichroism of the optical absorption (MCD), optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) as well as ESR and luminescence in Cd- doped BaF2 crystals γ-irradiated at RT were investigated. MCD signals centered at 295 nm, 290 nm and 365 nm are observed, together with corresponding radiation induced optical absorption bands in the same wavelength regions. The ODMR detected in all these bands is caused by hyperfine (hf) interaction of unpaired spin with Cd− nucleus. Three types of different Cd− related defects have been separated: 1) Cd+ c, represented by the MCD of derivative type centered at 295 nm and hf constant ACd = 480 mT, 2) Cd++c -center having lowered symme…

Degradation features of BaF2 scintillators under radiation and magnetic fields

1996

Degradation features of BaF2 scintillators have been examined in combined γ- and n-radiation and strong magnetic fields. Created radiation defects have been investigated by optical magnetooptical, and ODMR techniques. It is shown that the magnetic field has no selective action on defects of different structure. The magnetic field slightly diminishes the efficiency of creation of impurity color centers. The decrease of the creation rate at a magnetic field of B = 1 T does not exceed 10%. The nature of these radiation defects in BaF2 scintillators obtained by different technologies is discussed. Degradations-Eigenschaften von BaF2-Szintillatoren wurden in kombinierter γ- und Neutronen-Strahlu…

Discovery and molecular characterization of a plasmid localized in Buchnera sp. bacterial endosymbiont of the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi

1995

We have identified and completely sequenced a novel plasmid isolated from the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi. Evidence which suggests that the plasmid occurs localized within the bacterial endosymbionts is presented. The plasmid contains the four genes that constitute the entire leucine operon. This fact makes it really unique since most plasmids are dispensable and lack genes that encode essential anabolic functions. Four more phloem-feeding aphid species also seem to contain homologous plasmids. Although further work is necessary, we hypothesize that this plasmid has appeared during the evolution of the symbiotic association between the aphid and the bacterial endosymbiont. The fact that this p…
