Developing a Conceptual Framework for Investigating Communication Supporting Community Resilience
2015
In crisis management, cooperation within the response network is seen as crucial. Usually, this network refers to authorities and nongovernmental organizations, such as the Red Cross. However, the authors argue that to improve societal resilience one should take a broader overview of the actors involved in crisis preparedness and mitigation, and also include the public. With this in mind, the role of communication is scrutinized and a conceptual framework developed as a starting point for further investigation into how communication may be developed to strengthen a community approach to crisis management that includes citizen groups in the broader response network. A model is presented alon…
Empowering New Agents of Civil Society or Fostering Good Citizens? Framing Youth Participation in Finnish Youth Organizations
2018
ABSTRACTThis article investigates how nationwide Finnish youth civil society organizations frame their approaches to youth participation. By analyzing data from interviews, websites, and annual reports, five frames are identified. The frames differ in how they define the purpose of participation, whom they see as the main actors, and what kind of member, volunteer, or other participant roles they provide to young people. Three frames are used as master frames that see young people as agents, learners, or targets of support; two subordinate frames expand the scopes of the organizations. Only some of the frames include any concept of integrating young people into the civil society.
Learning Economic Citizenship Among Rural Women : Village Saving Groups in Western Uganda
2022
The notion of economic citizenship is prevalent in non-governmental organizations’ (NGOs) interventions aimed at promoting inclusive development in the Global South. In this chapter, we draw on the concept of participatory learning (Mayoux in IDS Bulletin 29:39–50, 1998; Pretty in World Development 23:1247–1263, 1995), to explore how NGO-initiated village savings and lending associations (VSLAs) provide platforms for learning among rural women in Uganda. Based on findings from qualitative participatory research with saving groups in western Uganda, we identify three ways through which women learn a plethora of skills that promote economic citizenship. Further, we reflect on how shared learn…

2020
The need for wider action against environmental problems such as climate change has brought the debate about the role of citizen to the political, practical, and scientific domains. Environmental citizenship provides a useful tool to conceptualize the relation between citizenship and the environment. However, there exists considerable variation in the ways environmental citizenship is understood regarding both the aspect of citizenship and the relationship to the environment. In this article, we review the literature on environmental citizenship and investigate the evolution of the concept. The article is based on a literature search with an emphasis on geographical research. The concept of…
Diversity – a Challenge for Educators
2006
The challenge for most European countries is to educate second generation immigrants in particular in order to fulfill their parents’ dreams, but above all, to create a situation where students have hope of finding meaningful life in serving their new country in different workplaces. Effective education is a vital source of personal opportunity as well as means to support the economic development of young people in any society. Diversity must be viewed as a valuable learning source for all students in any classroom. In working and doing things together, students can develop a sense of respect for, and tolerance towards, different cultural and ethnic groups in our societies. Only through int…

European citizenship : opportunities and abuses in private international family law
2021
El ensayo se centra en el papel de la autonomía jurídica en la regulación del estado familiar y las relaciones familiares entre los miembros de la unidad familiar típica o atípica.
