Mechanical Properties of Pore-Spanning Lipid Bilayers Probed by Atomic Force Microscopy

AbstractWe measure the elastic response of a free-standing lipid membrane to a local indentation by using an atomic force microscope. Starting point is a planar gold-coated alumina substrate with a chemisorbed 3-mercaptopropionic acid monolayer displaying circular pores of very well defined and tunable size, over which bilayers composed of N,N,-dimethyl-N,N,-dioctadecylammonium bromide or 1,2-dioleoyl-3-trimethylammonium-propane chloride were spread. A dilution test for the convergence of subseries of a monotone series

Cauchy's condensation test allows to determine the convergence of a monotone series by looking at a weighted subseries that only involves terms of the original series indexed by the powers of two. It is natural to ask whether the converse is also true: Is it possible to determine the convergence of an arbitrary subseries of a monotone series by looking at a suitably weighted version of the original series? In this note we show that the answer is affirmative and introduce a new convergence test particularly designed for this purpose.

Transverse shear warping functions for anisotropic multilayered plates

In this work, transverse shear warping functions for an equivalent single layer plate model are formulated from a variational approach. The part of the strain energy which involves the shear phenomenon is expressed in function of the warping functions and their derivatives. The variational calculus leads to a differential system of equations which warping functions must verify. Solving this system requires the choice of values for the (global) shear strains and their derivatives. A particular choice, which is justified for cross-ply laminates, leads to excellent results. We present a systematic methodology for the reformulation of a broad class of three-dimensional (3D) piezoelectric problems into a two-dimensional (2D) mathematical form. The sole underlying hypothesis is that the system geometry and material properties as well as the applied loads (forces and charges) and boundary conditions are translationally invariant along some direction. Three-dimensional Hall effect accelerometer for recording head movements of freely moving laboratory animals

A Hall effect device was constructed for a measurement of head movements in three spatial dimensions during classical conditioning experiments in cats. A Hall sensor was used to detect movements of a magnetic fragment floating in a small (15 x 15 mm) cube. The magnetic fragment was kept in the centre of the sealed cube with a thin coil spring which was filled with thin oil for damping excessive afteroscillations. A comparison of this device to a commercial accelerometer showed that the accuracy of the Hall device is sufficient for the movement recordings and that the device is sensitive also to slowly accelerating movements. Wild olive seed weevil in South Africa, Anchonocranus oleae Marshall (Coleoptera Curculionidae), a rediscovery after a century

The wild olive seed weevil, Anchonocranus oleae Marshall, 1912 was not found after its description and the study of its biology by Silvestri in 1915. Recently, A. oleae larvae were found alive inside the kernels of wild olives (O. europaea subsp. cuspidata) collected from trees between 2009 and 2012 in the Western Cape, South Africa. No weevil larvae were found in cultivated olives collected during the same period. Only two adult weevils emerged from olives collected on the tree and on the ground. Over the sampling period 20 adults were collected directly on wild olive trees at different sites in the Western Cape and one in the Eastern Cape. All adults were shown to be conspecific with the …

Earlier studies suggest that the memory trace for the conditioned eyeblink reflex is formed and maintained in the interpositus nucleus (IPN) in the deep cerebellar nuclei when either an auditory or visual stimulus is used as a conditioned stimulus (CS). 2. In the present study, the eyeblink reflex of the rabbit was conditioned to a somatosensory CS (an airpuff onto the back). 3. In well-trained animals, the IPN was reversibly inactivated by local cooling and the existence of the learned responses to the CS was then tested. 4.
