Automatic subgenre classification of heavy metal music

2011

Automatic genre classification of music has been of interest for researchers over a decade. Many success-ful methods and machine learning algorithms have been developed achieving reasonably good results. This thesis explores automatic sub-genre classification problem of one of the most popular meta-genres, heavy metal. To the best of my knowledge this is the first attempt to study the issue. Besides attempting automatic classification, the thesis investigates sub-genre taxonomy of heavy metal music, highlighting the historical origins and the most prominent musical features of its sub-genres. For classification, an algorithm proposed in (Barbedo & Lopes, 2007) was modified and implemented i…

The territories of tourism: a reflection about the experience of the Tourist Districts (Local Tourism Systems) in Sicily

2013

The tourist district is an important tool for territorial governance of regional tourism. The district is a type of Local System which is characterized by its multidimensionality, as well as the spatial contiguity of traders who belong to it. The territory is a space transformed by social interactions and relations of production: it is therefore the indispensable reference for measuring the impact of tourism. A bottom up approach in the process of identification of the districts is therefore vital. A Balance Score Card-approach is desirable to correctly manage this process. This study is a preliminary analysis derived from direct experience of the Sicilian tourist districts, recently formed…

The neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinoses: A historical introduction

2013

AbstractThe neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinoses (Batten disease) collectively constitute one of the most common groups of inherited childhood onset neurodegenerative disorders, and have also been identified in many domestic and laboratory animals. The group of human neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinoses currently comprises 14 genetically distinct disorders, mostly characterised by progressive mental, motor and visual deterioration with onset in childhood or adolescence. Abnormal autofluorescent, electron-dense granules accumulate in the cytoplasm of nerve cells, and this storage process is associated with selective destruction and loss of neurons in the brain and retina. The present paper outlines near…

A scoping review on interventions to promote physical activity among adults with disabilities

2016

People with disabilities are at increased risk for obesity as well as other secondary conditions that lead to further decline in health and functional status. Despite there being strong evidence that physical activity (PA) can help to reduce the incidence and severity of preventable conditions, approximately half of all adults with disabilities get no regular physical activity. In addition, there is limited knowledge on the PA promotion interventions effectiveness among individuals with disabilities. Recently the Behaviour Change Techniques Taxonomy version 1 (BCT Taxonomy v1) became available as a method for reporting, replicating, and synthesizing research evidence, yet it is lacking in s…

A new classification of the South African endemic family Bruniaceae based on molecular and morphological data

2011

The classification of Bruniaceae is reviewed based on molecular (matK, ITS, rbcL) and morphological data, and the tribes and genera are redefined as monophyletic, morphologically diagnosable lineages. The family is subdivided into three tribes and six genera with 81 accepted species, Linconieae (Linconia), Audouinieae {Audounia [inch Tittmannia', Thamnea [incl. Pseudobaeckea teres]), and Brunieae (Berzelia [inch Brunia p.p.], Staavia [incl. Raspalia staavioides], and Brunia [incl. Nebelia, Pseudobaeckea p.p., Raspalia p.p., Lonchostoma, Mniothamned'). A key for the new classification, a short description of each genus and an updated nomenclature of all the species are provided. Two new trib…

Cluster-based active learning for compact image classification

2010

In this paper, we consider active sampling to label pixels grouped with hierarchical clustering. The objective of the method is to match the data relationships discovered by the clustering algorithm with the user's desired class semantics. The first is represented as a complete tree to be pruned and the second is iteratively provided by the user. The active learning algorithm proposed searches the pruning of the tree that best matches the labels of the sampled points. By choosing the part of the tree to sample from according to current pruning's uncertainty, sampling is focused on most uncertain clusters. This way, large clusters for which the class membership is already fixed are no longer…

Sparse Manifold Clustering and Embedding to discriminate gene expression profiles of glioblastoma and meningioma tumors.

2013

Sparse Manifold Clustering and Embedding (SMCE) algorithm has been recently proposed for simultaneous clustering and dimensionality reduction of data on nonlinear manifolds using sparse representation techniques. In this work, SMCE algorithm is applied to the differential discrimination of Glioblastoma and Meningioma Tumors by means of their Gene Expression Profiles. Our purpose was to evaluate the robustness of this nonlinear manifold to classify gene expression profiles, characterized by the high-dimensionality of their representations and the low discrimination power of most of the genes. For this objective, we used SMCE to reduce the dimensionality of a preprocessed dataset of 35 single…

Local Directional Multi Radius Binary Pattern

2018

Face recognition becomes an important task performed routinely in our daily lives. This application is encouraged by the wide availability of powerful and low-cost desktop and embedded computing systems, while the need comes from the integration in too much real world systems including biometric authentication, surveillance, human-computer interaction, and multimedia management. This article proposes a new variant of LBP descriptor referred as Local Directional Multi Radius Binary Pattern (LDMRBP) as a robust and effective face descriptor. The proposed LDMRBP operator is built using new neighborhood topology and new pattern encoding scheme. The adopted face recognition system consists of th…

Spatial patterns of bacterial taxa in nature reflect ecological traits of deep branches of the 16S rRNA bacterial tree

2009

International audience; Whether bacteria display spatial patterns of distribution and at which level of taxonomic organization such patterns can be observed are central questions in microbial ecology. Here we investigated how the total and relative abundances of eight bacterial taxa at the phylum or class level were spatially distributed in a pasture by using quantitative PCR and geostatistical modelling. The distributions of the relative abundance of most taxa varied by a factor of 2.5–6.5 and displayed strong spatial patterns at the field scale. These spatial patterns were taxon-specific and correlated to soil properties, which indicates that members of a bacterial clade defined at high t…
