Elliptical Fourier Descriptors for shape retrieval in biological images

The retrieval of information in a standard database can be obtained in different ways and in some cases a number of steps are necessary to extract the sought for information. More difficulties exist when we are looking for a pictorial information in a database. This paper presents a method for finding an image in a biological database based on elliptical Fourier descriptors. Fourier descriptors are considered here as textual information and a distance function is proposed to evaluate the best result. Fourier descriptors and distance function are used to retrieve image in pictorial database.

Abstract Incorporation of a priori defined plant associations into remote sensing products is a major challenge that has only recently been confronted by the remote sensing community. We present an approach to map the spatial distribution of such associations by using plant indicator values (IVs) for salinity, moisture and nutrients as an intermediate between spectral reflectance and association occurrences. Method optimization to measure polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) concentrations in soils of Bratislava, Slovakia.

We modified an analytical method to determine polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in urban soils of Bratislava (Slovakia). Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) introduced as a clean-up step for soil extracts substantially reduced matrix enhancements when PBDEs were measured with gas chromatography-negative chemical ionization-mass spectrometry (GC-NCI-MS). The resulting method proved to be accurate, precise, and showed low detection limits. The sum of 15 PBDE concentrations in surface horizons of Bratislava soils ranged from 87 to 627 pg g(-1). HOW DO FISCAL CONSOLIDATION AND FISCAL STIMULI IMPACT ON THE SYNCHRONIZATION OF BUSINESS CYCLES?

Using quarterly data for a panel of advanced economies, we show that synchronized fiscal consolidation (stimulus) programmes in different countries make their business cycles more closely linked. We also find: (i) some evidence of decoupling when an inflation targeting regime is unilaterally adopted; (ii) an increase in business cycle synchronization when countries fix their exchange rates and become members of a monetary union; (iii) a positive effect of bilateral trade on the synchronization of business cycles. Central limit theorem for bifurcating Markov chains under L 2 -ergodic conditions

Bifurcating Markov chains (BMC) are Markov chains indexed by a full binary tree representing the evolution of a trait along a population where each individual has two children. We provide a central limit theorem for additive functionals of BMC under L 2-ergodic conditions with three different regimes. This completes the pointwise approach developed in a previous work. As application, we study the elementary case of symmetric bifurcating autoregressive process, which justify the non-trivial hypothesis considered on the kernel transition of the BMC. We illustrate in this example the phase transition observed in the fluctuations.

The sealing of soils by impervious materials is, normally, detrimental to its ecological functions. Exchanges of energy, water and gases are restricted or hampered and an increasing pressure is being exerted on adjacent, non sealed areas. The negative effects span from loss of plant production and natural habitats to increased floods, pollution, and health risks and consequently higher social costs.
