Exploitation competition between hole‐nesters ( Muscardinus avellanarius , Mammalia and Parus caeruleus , Aves) in Mediterranean woodlands
2005
Data from a long-term study (1993-2003) using artificial nest-boxes, were analysed to examine competition for nesting between blue tit Parus caeruleus and common dormouse Muscardinus avellanarius in Sicily. Occupation rates and the reproductive biology of the blue tit in sample woodlots outside the distribution area of the common dormouse were used as a control in sample areas where the two species were syntopic. A selection test showed that the two species, when living in syntopy, actively chose the small nest-boxes, thus overlapping in the use of the same spatial resource. The experimental exclusion of the common dormouse from nest-boxes caused an increase of blue tit occupation rate. Onc…
Learning from Errors: Detecting ZigBee Interference in WiFi Networks
2014
In this work we show how to detect ZigBee interference on commodity WiFi cards by monitoring the reception errors, such as synchronization errors, invalid header formats, too long frames, etc., caused by ZigBee transmissions. Indeed, in presence of non-WiFi modulated signals, the occurrence of these types of errors follows statistics that can be easily recognized. Moreover, the duration of the error bursts depends on the transmission interval of the interference source, while the error spacing depends on the receiver implementation. On the basis of these considerations, we propose the adoption of hidden Markov chains for characterizing the behavior of WiFi receivers in presence of controlle…
Ecological and evolutionary consequences of selective interspecific information use
2023
Recent work has shown that animals frequently use social information from individuals of their own species as well as from other species; however, the ecological and evolutionary consequences of this social information use remain poorly understood. Additionally, information users may be selective in their social information use, deciding from whom and how to use information, but this has been overlooked in an interspecific context. In particular, the intentional decision to reject a behaviour observed via social information has received less attention, although recent work has indicated its presence in various taxa. Based on existing literature, we explore in which circumstances selective i…
Shape evolution in even-even N≤126, Z≥82 nuclei
2010
The shape evolution in the neutron-de cient lead, polonium and radium nuclei has been investigated via in-beam and delayed y-ray and conversion electron spectroscopy. The lead isotope 180Pb is found to still exhibit prolate excited structure, related to the known intruder structures in the heavier isotopes. The production cross-section of 180Pb was only 10 nb, one of the lowest ever employed in an in-beam experiment. A candidate for an excited prolate band was found in 192Po, making it the rst polonium isotope for which both oblate and prolate rotational bands have been established. Contrary to the previous results, the current experiments indicate that the onset of deformation in the radiu…
Stranieri. Figure dell'Altro nella Grecia antica
2020
Shape coexistence in the neutron-deficient even-even Hg182-188 isotopes studied via Coulomb excitation
2014
Coulomb-excitation experiments to study electromagnetic properties of radioactive even-even Hg isotopes were performed with 2.85 MeV/nucleon mercury beams from REX-ISOLDE. Magnitudes and relative signs of the reduced E2 matrix elements that couple the ground state and low-lying excited states in Hg182-188 were extracted. Information on the deformation of the ground and the first excited 0+ states was deduced using the quadrupole sum rules approach. Results show that the ground state is slightly deformed and of oblate nature, while a larger deformation for the excited 0+ state was noted in Hg182,184. The results are compared to beyond mean field and interacting-boson based models and interp…
Detailed spectroscopy of the neutron-deficient bismuth isotopes ¹⁹³,¹⁹⁵Bi
2015
Two experiments aiming to study the shape coexistence and competing structures in 193Bi and 195Bi isotopes have been performed at the Accelerator laboratory of the University of Jyv askyl a, Finland (JYFL). Many new states have been found, hugely extending the previously known level schemes for both isotopes. The i13=2 bands were extended up to I = 45/2+ in both the 193;195Bi isotopes. In case of 193Bi, the I = 31/2+ member of the i13=2 band was found to de-excite also to a long-lived isomeric state. This link determines the energy of the isomeric state to be 2350(1) keV and suggests a spin and parity of 29/2+. The half-life of the isomeric state was measured to be 85(3) s. A level structur…
Development of Emotional Skills in Adolescents to Prevent Cyberbullying and Improve Subjective Well-Being
2018
Bullying behavior alters the way in which students coexist together in the classroom and negatively affects adolescents’ well-being. Research highlights the importance of emotional skills in promoting positive youth development and optimal social functioning. Therefore, education in these skills is a potential target for interventions aimed at reducing cyberbullying and promoting satisfaction with life during adolescence. This study analyzes the impact of an emotion education program in adolescents to promote classroom coexistence and well-being. The sample comprised 148 students from 7th and 8th grade of secondary school aged between 12 and 15 years (Mage = 12.63, SDage = 0.74; 57% girls).…
Palermo habitat multi-specie.
Alfonsa Nossola
2019
Pluralizm współczesnych społeczeństw w zglobalizowanym świecie nieodłącznie wiąże się z napięciami, konfliktem interesów i rozbieżnymi poglądami dotyczącymi postrzegania świata i praktycznych zachowań ludzi.
