Children’s improved performance with age in analogy tasks has been explained by an increase in semantic knowledge of the items and the relations between them or by the development of an increased ability to inhibit irrelevant information. We tested the so-called "unbalanced attentional focus hypothesis" that claims that a failure to choose the "analogical" match can be the result of a difficulty to focus on all the relevant information available. Previous eye-tracking research has suggested, in analogies of the A:B::C:D format, that 5-6 year-olds organize their search around the C item. They focused significantly less than adults on the A:B pair, thereby hindering their discovering the rela…

A Grounded Theory of Elite Male Table Tennis Players’ Activity during Matches

In our discussion we focus on evaluating and critiquing the current status of qualitative research on athletic identity and outlining recommendations for improving methodological rigor. It is concluded that both quantitative and qualitative stu…
Holistic Literature Education as an Effective Tool for Social-Emotional Learning
2021
This chapter concerns a model of holistic, structured literature education, which has pedagogical value for social-emotional learning. Fiction supports children's personal growth in many ways. The special emphasis lies on the reading process, which aims at empathizing reading and sharing of text-based emotions and experiences. Further individual and common arts-based meaning-making is an intrinsic part of the reading process. The empathized reading process as well as supportive reading environment need to raise educators' consciousness. Creative, arts-based activities offer channels to make children's interpretations of fictional texts visible. There are several presented examples of arts-b…

To validly assess teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge (PCK), performance-based tasks with open-response formats are required. Automated scoring is considered an appropriate ap-proach to reduce the resource-intensity of human scoring and to achieve more consistent scor-ing results than human raters. The focus is on the comparability of human and automated scor-ing of PCK for economics teachers. The answers of (prospective) teachers (N=852) to six open-response tasks from a standardized and validated test were scored by two trained human raters and the engine "Educational SCoRIng TOolkit" (ESCRITO). The average agreement between human and computer ratings, κw = .66, suggests a convergent …
