Two collagen receptors, integrins alpha1beta1 and alpha2beta1, can regulate distinct functions in cells. Ligation of alpha1beta1, unlike alpha2beta1, has been shown to result in recruitment of Shc and activation of the Ras/ERK pathway. To identify the downstream signaling molecules activated by alpha2beta1 integrin, we have overexpressed wild-type alpha2, or chimeric alpha2 subunit with alpha1 integrin cytoplasmic domain in human osteosarcoma cells (Saos-2) lacking endogenous alpha2beta1. The chimeric alpha2/alpha1 chain formed a functional heterodimer with beta1. Behavior of Calcium Phosphate–Chitosan–Collagen Composite Coating on AISI 304 for Orthopedic Applications

Calcium phosphate/chitosan/collagen composite coating on AISI 304 stainless steel was investigated. Coatings were realized by galvanic coupling that occurs without an external power supply because it begins with the coupling between two metals with different standard electrochemical potentials. The process consists of the co-deposition of the three components with the calcium phosphate crystals incorporated into the polymeric composite of chitosan and collagen. Introduction: The majority of young women use oral contraceptives (OCs). Use of OCs has been associated with lower myofibrillar protein and tendon collagen synthesis rates, but it is unknown whether OCs will limit the adaptive response of myotendinous tissue to resistance training. Integrin-mediated Cell Adhesion to Type I Collagen Fibrils

In the integrin family, the collagen receptors form a structurally and functionally distinct subgroup. Two members of this subgroup, α1β1 and α2β1 integrins, are known to bind to monomeric form of type I collagen. However, in tissues type I collagen monomers are organized into large fibrils immediately after they are released from cells. Here, we studied collagen fibril recognition by integrins. By an immunoelectron microscopy method we showed that integrin α2I domain is able to bind to classical D-banded type I collagen fibrils. Collagenases class I (Col G) and class II (Col H) currently available for tissue dissociation are produced from Clostridium histolyticum (human pathogen) strains. In the processes of extraction of the cells from the tissue, combined activity of both classes of enzymes is required. CI and CII are complementary in degrading collagen. Type IV collagen and laminin in slow and fast skeletal muscle in rats--effects of age and life-time endurance training.

The changes in the biochemical composition of basement membrane (BM) in slow-twitch (m. soleus, MS) and fast-twitch (m. rectus femoris, MRF) skeletal muscles of rats were studied during aging and life-time endurance training (treadmill running). The concentrations of the 7S domain of type IV collagen and of the P2 fragment of laminin were determined with radioimmunoassays in the muscles of rats aged 1, 2, 4, 10, and 24 months. The concentration of type IV collagen was higher in MS than in MRF and increased significantly with age. At older ages, the concentration tended to be higher in the MS of trained than untrained rats. Distribution of type I and type II collagen gene expression during the development of human long bones

The temporal and spatial gene expression of collagen type I and type II during the development of the human long bones was studied by the technique of in situ hybridization covering the period from the cartilagenous bone anlage to the formation of a regular growth plate in the newborn. Analysis of the early stages around the seventh week of gestation revealed for type II collagen a strong hybridization signal limited to the chondrogenic tissue. Peripheral desmoplastic ameloblastoma: histopathological and immunohistochemical profile of a case.

In this study we present a rare case of peripheral desmoplastic ameloblastoma and discuss its clinical features, histopathology, and inmunoshistochemical profile. This article reports a new case of this unusual neoplasm in a 66 year-old woman in which the main complaint was an asymptomatic swelling located in the right body of mandible. Histopathological findings were similar to the two previously reported cases of this tumor.
