Grapevine and wine metabolomics-based guidelines for fair data and metadata management

2021

In the era of big and omics data, good organization, management, and description of experimental data are crucial for achieving high-quality datasets. This, in turn, is essential for the export of robust results, to publish reliable papers, make data more easily available, and unlock the huge potential of data reuse. Lately, more and more journals now require authors to share data and metadata according to the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles. This work aims to provide a step-by-step guideline for the FAIR data and metadata management specific to grapevine and wine science. In detail, the guidelines include recommendations for the organization of data and meta…

Persistent software transactional memory in Haskell

2021

Emerging persistent memory in commodity hardware allows byte-granular accesses to persistent state at memory speeds. However, to prevent inconsistent state in persistent memory due to unexpected system failures, different write-semantics are required compared to volatile memory. Transaction-based library solutions for persistent memory facilitate the atomic modification of persistent data in languages where memory is explicitly managed by the programmer, such as C/C++. For languages that provide extended capabilities like automatic memory management, a more native integration into the language is needed to maintain the high level of memory abstraction. It is shown in this paper how persiste…

Challenges and Confusions in Learning Version Control with Git

2014

Scholars agree on the importance of incorporating use of version control systems (VCSs) into computing curricula, so as to be able to prepare students for today’s distributed and collaborative work places. One of the present-day distributed version control systems (DVCSs) is Git, the system we have used on several courses. In this paper, we report on the challenges for learning and using the system based on a survey data collected from a project-based course and our own teaching experiences during several different kinds of computing courses. The results of this analysis are discussed and recommendations are made. peerReviewed

Miniaturized solid-phase extraction techniques

2015

More than 80% of analysis time is spent on sample collection and sample preparation, so sample preparation is a critical part of the analytical process. Traditionally, liquid-liquid extraction was developed and employed to screen for general unknowns. However, solid-phase extraction (SPE) is becoming highly popular as an alternative, due to its simplicity and economy in terms of time and solvent. This review summarizes the current state of the art and the future prospects for green analytical chemistry with special emphasis on environment-friendly sample-preparation techniques based on the solid phase. We discuss in detail miniaturized SPE techniques, based on the most relevant, most repres…

Las cooperativas de crédito como entidades colaboradoras de la Administración tributaria

2000

Nowadays the collaboration of private citizens in tax collection management is essential for effective tax collection. For credit cooperatives, collaborating with the State Agency for Tax Administration in tax collection management means public recognition of their ability as financial operators and their economic standing and financial management capability, as well as the possibility of providing more services for their members.

Quando la malattia nasce, cresce e muore «con» (συν-) il paziente. Terminologia del male congenito nel Corpus ippocratico

2019

The present study aims to investigate the use and semantics of the most common terminology used by the medical writers of the Hippocratic Collection in order to define diseases commonly considered to be of a “congenital” nature, with particular attention to nominal as well as verbal forms, composed by the prefixation syn-, indicating the different stages of the pathological process according to which disease is represented as a proper entity claimed to arise inside the patient, to develop, to became old and then also to die together with him or her. Individual constitution, familiarity, epigenetic factors such as conditions of growth during gestation or climatic conditions, age of the patie…

Tourism Statistics: Methodological Imperatives and Difficulties: The Case of Residential Tourism in Island Communities1,3

2008

Tourism statistics are one of the key sources of information for economists, public officials and tourism decision-makers. The aim of the present paper is to describe and critique the methodological difficulties encountered when approaching statistical studies in tourism. The case of hidden tourism in island communities is used to illustrate that in tourism statistics there exists a lack of clarity and convention concerning definitions, procedures, measurement and analytic approaches. The conclusions and the study implications should help tourism authorities and tourism statisticians to better define and standardise methodological and measurement approaches and practices and to more effecti…

Early motherhood: voices from female adolescents in the Hohoe Municipality, Ghana—a qualitative study utilizing Schlossberg’s Transition Theory

2020

ABSTRACT Purpose: Using Schlossberg’s Transition Theory, this study explored the lived experiences of pregnant adolescents and adolescent mothers coping strategies during their transition to motherhood. Methods: Based on a phenomenological perspective, this qualitative study used in-depth interviews (IDIs) and focus group discussions (FGDs) to answer the research aim. The process of data gathering included 8 FGDs and 12 IDIs held with adolescent mothers and pregnant adolescents. Audio recordings were transcribed and imported into MAXQDA 2018 for analysis. Results: Applying the interpretative phenomenologial analysis (IPA), four key themes emerged. This included: news of pregnancy; adolescen…

Organizational Memory and Knowledge Transfer in Agri-Food Organization: the Corporate Museum Way

2021

Corporate museums represent an unexplored phenomenon under various aspects. In fact, numerous studies on corporate museum focus on marketing aspects. Although, the first corporate museums appeared in the early 1900s, few studies have addressed this phenomenon from the perspective of organizational memory and the transfer of knowledge. This study fits into this gap in the literature. From the perspective of organizational theory, the study analyzes the phenomenon of the corporate museum as a mechanism for knowledge transfer and organizational memory. To achieve this goal, this work uses a descriptive qualitative methodology, based on the analysis of a public dataset. The corporate museums in…
