Data gathering and mathematical modelling for pitch stabilisation of a high speed catamaran
2011
This paper deals with the data gathering phase for a 21-foot long planing catamaran. The boat experiences a take-off phenomenon at high speed which needs to be countered. An overview of stability problems in high speed hydroplanes is described with possible solutions recommended. A subsequent gathering of data using laser scanning and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of the boat are described. The paper ends with a look at the initial developments of stabilising systems for the boat.
Product-related information for sustainable use of laundry detergents in Finnish households
2007
Abstract The purpose of this paper is to report on research on how product-related information can guide sustainable product use in the context of laundry detergents. More precisely, the purpose of the study was designed to analyse how the detergent package information and dosing instructions are read, understood and followed in the Finnish households. Data collection methods included interviews in 340 Finnish households in 2004 and 299 households in 2005 with a standardised questionnaire. Results show that the majority of respondents did not know if the washing water is hard or soft, which indeed has a direct effect on dosing amounts. However, package information per se was found to be eas…
An expert system for vineyard management based upon ubiquitous network technologies
2011
Vineyard operations for quality wines production are currently based upon costly and time-consuming manual sampling operations required to assess the maturity phases of grapevines. The ripening process however is significantly influenced by the environmental parameters which nowadays can be effectively monitored by means of ubiquitous computing technologies. Besides the possibility of gathering data, hence, suitable tools are required to support the vineyard management process. The present research concerns the development of an expert system to effectively manage the vineyard operations. The methodology is based on the analysis of the time series of indices related to the maturation phases…
Hybrid moving bed biofilm reactors: a pilot plant experiment.
2008
The growing increment of the urbanization and on the other hand, the even more strict effluent limits imposed by the Water Framework Directive for the receiving water body quality state have lead to a need of upgrading several existing WWTP. With this respect HMBBR systems are an innovative solution since allow to upgrade existing high loaded WWTP without building new tanks. However, some uncertainties in their design, maintenance as well as performance have to be addressed due to their recent acquisition compared with well consolidated technologies such as activated sludge systems. In this light, a data gathering campaign on a HMBBR pilot plant has been performed. The aim was to detect the…
Proposal of geographic information systems methodology for quality control procedures of data obtained in naturalistic driving studies
2015
The primary goal of naturalistic driving studies is to provide a comprehensive observation of the driver's behaviour under real-life conditions by measureing a great number of parameters at high temporal frequencies. Achieving this goal, however, is a complex endeavor that faces many challenges such as the complexity of the vehicle instrumentation during the phase of data collection, and the difficult handling of large data volumes during the phase of data analysis. These drawbacks often cause episodes of data losses. Improving the technical aspects of the collection of naturalistic data is of paramount importance to increase the return of the investment made in it. An aspect to consider is…
Working Environment in the New EU Member State of Lithuania: Examining a ‘Worst Case’ Example
2008
Using recent survey data from Lithuania, it is suggested that post-communist countries such as Lithuania, admittedly a 'worst case' example, have specific legacies of serious health and safety problems. On a range of general health and occupational safety and health indicators, some three years after joining the European Union, Lithuania is currently a poor performer, and on key indicators the poorest in the European Union. Yet, formally, Lithuania has comprehensive health and safety legislation in line with EU requirements. Survey data suggest, however, a work regime of intensification and an absence of a participative working environment in which employees have a 'voice' in the safety man…
Experiencing Urban Mining in an Italian Municipality towards a Circular Economy vision
2017
Abstract Selective waste collection in Italy has undergone significant changes over the last decade, highlighting very different approaches from one region to another. Research results presented in this paper are underlying differences between geographical regions and use them as a model of good practices to improve the less optimized systems. In the last decade, the Trento City Council has established a goal – the optimization of selective municipal solid waste collection – that led to a very low amount of recyclable materials in the residual fraction. More than that, for the first time sanitary textiles have been considered as a separable fraction at the source; for a long time this type …
Using Problem-focused Approach to Nurture Creativity and Entrepreneurship among Students
2015
Abstract This paper discusses the use of a problem-focused approach to nurture creativity and entrepreneurship among students in a school setting. The study sample consisted of three groups of students (age 16 years old) from three secondary schools in Malaysia. The participants consist of 25–35 students from each school (n=95). The data collection took place during three workshops, which were conducted using a problem-focused approach, with participants from each school. At the end of each workshop, participants were asked to fill in an electronic diary about their experience. The participants’ reflections after the first workshop were analysed to identify the use of a problem-focused appr…
Innovativeness and Family-Firm Performance: The Moderating Effect of Family Commitment
2016
The positive relationship between innovativeness and firm performance is well established and applies equally to all businesses, including family firms. However, little is yet known about how the unique characteristics of family firms influence this relationship. Drawing upon the resource-based view (RBV) of the firm, this study explains how the interplay between innovativeness as a firm-specific resource and family commitment as a family-specific resource affects performance. The analysis of longitudinal survey data collected from Finnish family firms demonstrates a curvilinear (U-shaped) moderating effect of the owner family’s commitment to the firm, in that the impact of innovativeness o…
Identifiability analysis for receiving water body quality modelling
2009
In urban drainage, new computational possibilities have supported the development of new integrated approaches aimed at joint water quantity and quality analysis of the whole urban drainage system. Although the benefit of an integrated approach has been widely demonstrated, to date, several aspects prevent its applicability such as scarce availability of field data if compared with model complexity. These aspects sometimes prevent the correct estimation of parameters thus leading to large uncertainty in modelling response. This is a typical parameter identifiability problem that is discussed in the present paper evaluating the effect of identifiability procedures in increasing operator conf…
