Design and test of a prototype silicon detector module for ATLAS Semiconductor Tracker endcaps
2005
The ATLAS Semiconductor Tracker (SCT) will be a central part of the tracking system of the ATLAS experiment. The SCT consists of four concentric barrels of silicon detectors as well as two silicon endcap detectors formed by nine disks each. The layout of the forward silicon detector module presented in this paper is based on the approved layout of the silicon detectors of the SCT, their geometry and arrangement in disks, but uses otherwise components identical to the barrel modules of the SCT. The module layout is optimized for excellent thermal management and electrical performance, while keeping the assembly simple and adequate for a large scale module production. This paper summarizes th…
The Miniball spectrometer
2013
The Miniball germanium detector array has been operational at the REX (Radioactive ion beam EXperiment) post accelerator at the Isotope Separator On-Line facility ISOLDE at CERN since 2001. During the last decade, a series of successful Coulomb excitation and transfer reaction studies have been performed with this array, utilizing the unique and high-quality radioactive ion beams which are available at ISOLDE. In this article, an overview is given of the technical details of the full Miniball setup, including a description of the γ-ray and particle detectors, beam monitoring devices and methods to deal with beam contamination. The specific timing properties of the REX-ISOLDE facility are hi…

The upgraded ISOLDE yield database – A new tool to predict beam intensities
2020
At the CERN-ISOLDE facility a variety of radioactive ion beams are available to users of the facility. The number of extractable isotopes estimated from yield database data exceeds 1000 and is still increasing. Due to high demand and scarcity of available beam time, precise experiment planning is required. The yield database stores information about radioactive beam yields and the combination of target material and ion source needed to extract a certain beam along with their respective operating conditions. It allows to investigate the feasibility of an experiment and the estimation of required beamtime. With the increasing demand for ever more exotic beams, needs arise to extend the functi…
The SPEDE Spectrometer: Combined In-Beam γ-ray and Conversion Electron Spectroscopy with Radioactive Ion Beams
2015
The SPEDE spectrometer [1] aims to combine a silicon detector, for the detection of electrons, with the MINIBALL γ-ray detection array for in-beam studies employing radioactive ion beams at the HIE-ISOLDE facility at CERN. The setup will be primarily used for octupole collectivity [2] and shape coexistence studies [3, 4] in Coulomb excitation experiments. In the shape coexistence cases the transitions between states of the same spin and parity have enhanced E0 strength [5]. Additionally the 0→0 transitions, typically present in nuclei exhibiting shape coexistence [6], can only occur via E0 transitions, i.e. via internal conversion electron emission.
Inclusive double-helicity asymmetries in neutral-pion and eta-meson production in p → + p → collisions at s =200GeV
2014
Abstract: Results are presented from data recorded in 2009 by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider for the double-longitudinal spin asymmetry, A LL , for π 0 and η production in ffiffiffi s p ¼ 200 GeV polarized p þ p collisions. Comparison of the π 0 results with different theory expectations based on fits of other published data showed a preference for small positive values of gluon polarization, Δ G , in the proton in the probed Bjorken x range. The effect of adding the new 2009 π 0 data to a recent global analysis of polarized scattering data is also shown, resulting in a best fit value Δ G ½ 0 . 05 ; 0 . 2 DSSV ¼ 0 . 06 þ 0 . 11 − 0 . 15 in the range 0 . 05 <x< …
Measurement ofΥ(1S+2S+3S)production inp+pand Au + Au collisions atsNN=200GeV
2015
Measurements of bottomonium production in heavy-ion and p + p collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) are presented. The inclusive yield of the three states, (1S + 2S + 3S), was measured in the PHENIX experiment via electron-positron decay pairs at midrapidity for Au + Au and p + p collisions at root sNN = 200 GeV. The (1S + 2S + 3S) -> e(+)e(-) differential cross section at midrapidity was found to be B(ee)d sigma/dy = 108 +/- 38 (stat) +/- 15 (syst) +/- 11 (luminosity) pb in p + p collisions. The nuclear modification factor in the 30% most central Au + Au collisions indicates a suppression of the total. state yield relative to the extrapolation from p + p collision data. …
Top-quark mass measurements using jet rates at LHC
2013
This work presents a new method to measure the top-quark mass in hadronic collisions[1]. The method uses the sensitivity of the tt̄ + 1-jet production on the top-quark mass. In detail we study the ℛ distribution defined as the tt̄ + 1-jet normalized cross section differential in the invariant mass of the total system and calculated at NLO accuracy. We prove that the ℛ distribution has a high sensitivity to the top-quark mass. Furthermore we investigate and quantify the impact of the dominant theoretical and experimental uncertainties. The results obtained show, that the method has the potential to be competitive in precision with established approaches and allows a complementary measurement…
TileCal optical multiplexer board 9U prototype
2007
This paper presents the architecture and the status of the optical multiplexer board (OMB) for the ATLAS/LHC Tile hadronic calorimeter (TileCal). This board will analyze the front-end data CRC to prevent bit and burst errors produced by radiation. Besides, due to its position within the data acquisition chain it will be used to emulate front-end data for tests. The first two prototypes of the final OMB 9U version have been produced at CERN. Detailed design issues and manufacture features of these prototypes are described. These prototypes are being validated whereas some firmware developments are being implemented in the programmable devices of the board. Functional descriptions of the boar…
Measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry of e(+)e(-)-]z-]b(b)over-bar using prompt leptons and a lifetime tag
1995
The forward-backward asymmetry of the process e+e-→Z→b {Mathematical expression} has been measured using events collected by the DELPHI experiment during the 1991 and 1992 LEP runs. This data sample corresponded to 884 000 hadronic Z decays at a centre-of-mass energy {Mathematical expression}. The tagging of b-quark events was performed using two approaches; the first was based on the semileptonic decay channels b→X+μ and b→X+e, the second used a lifetime tag with jet-charge reconstruction. The results of these two methods were combined to give {Mathematical expression} With the semileptonic sample, the forward-backward asymmetry of the process e+e-→Z→ {Mathematical expression} was also mea…
