ATLAS SemiConductor Tracker: operation and performance

The SemiConductor Tracker (SCT) is a silicon strip detector and one of the key precision tracking devices in the Inner Detector of the ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS) experiment at CERN. The SCT installation in the ATLAS experimental cavern was completed in 2007 and it has been operational since then. An extensive commissioning phase followed, during which calibration data was collected and the performance of the system was studied. The SCT was ready for the first LHC proton-proton collisions and it continues recording data successfully since then. Passive optical resonator for OSQAR LSW experiment

This paper treats the issue of locking a solid state laser, pumped by high power diodes (Verdi V5), to a twenty meter long optical resonator for OSQAR LSW - light shining through the wall, dark matter search experiment. In this paper the optical design and a possible locking scheme are presented. The environmental conditions in SM18 testing hall at CERN, where OSQAR experiment is based, are discussed. The main focus is put on the vibration analysis, cavity transversal modes behaviour, possible clipping in the anticryostat of LHC – Large Hadron Collider magnet bore and locking loop parameters required for future experimental testing. Perturbativity and mass scales in the minimal left-right symmetric model

The scalar sector of the minimal Left-Right model at TeV scale is revisited in light of the large quartic coupling needed for a heavy flavor-changing scalar. The stability and perturbativity of the effective potential is discussed and merged with constraints from low-energy processes. Thus the perturbative level of the Left-Right scale is sharpened. Lower limits on the triplet scalars are also derived: the left-handed triplet is bounded by oblique parameters, while the doubly-charged right- handed component is limited by the h → γγ, Zγ decays. Current constraints disfavor their detection as long as WR is within the reach of the LHC.
An upgraded ATLAS Central Trigger for post-2014 LHC luminosities

In early 2012, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) reached instantaneous luminosities of 6.7·1033 cm−2s−1 and produced events with up to 40 interactions per colliding proton bunch. This places stringent operational and physical requirements on the ATLAS trigger in order to reduce the collision rate of up to 40 MHz when operating with design parameters to a manageable event storage rate of about 400 Hz without discarding those events considered interesting. The Level-1 trigger is the first rate-reducing step in the ATLAS trigger and primarily composed of the Calorimeter Trigger, Muon Trigger, and the Central Trigger Processor which are implemented in custom built VME electronics. Dielectric Collimators for Beam Delivery Systems*

Abstract Wakefield generation by the collimation system is known to be a critical linear collider design issue. Optimization of the collimators represents a tradeoff between beam quality (halo reduction) and luminosity reduction. The primary objective is to reduce both short range (resonant) and long range (resistive) deflecting wakefields from collimators that reduce the luminosity of the machine. We consider the CLIC BDS (beam delivery system) and examine the potential for using dielectric rather than highly conducting materials for collimation. Hyperfine and Isotope Shift Measurements Far off Stability by Optical Pumping

In this talk I will review optical pumping (OP) experiments performed by our group to ISOLDE, CERN, in a series of Hg isotopes spanning from mass number 181 to 205 (first results in refs. [1] and [2], final in refs. [3] and [4]. I will then discuss what impact these measurements had on nuclear structure research far off stability and how the results of the latter are retroacting again on the optical work. In particular they ask for isotope shifts (IS) of light even Hg isotopes which we are prepared to measure by laser spectroscopy. Nuclear Modification ofψ′,χc, andJ/ψProduction ind+AuCollisions atsNN=200 GeV

We present results for three charmonia states (psi' chi(c), and J/ psi) in d + Au collisions at vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.35 and root s(NN) = 200 GeV. We find that the modification of the psi' yield relative to that of the J/ psi scales approximately with charged particle multiplicity at midrapidity across p + A, d + Au, and A + A results from the Super Proton Synchrotron and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. In large-impact-parameter collisions we observe a similar suppression for the psi' and J/ psi, while in small-impact-parameter collisions the more weakly bound psi' is more strongly suppressed. The COMPASS experiment at the CERN-SPS studies the spectrum and the structure of hadrons by scattering high energy hadrons and polarised muons off various fixed targets. Recent results for the hadron programme comprise highlights from different topics. A selective overview is given and, among others, the following results are discussed. The precise determination of the pion polarisability, a long standing puzzle that has been solved now, is presented as well as measurements of radiative widths. The ATLAS level-1 trigger: Status of the system and experience from commissioning with cosmic ray muons

The detector at CERN's large hadron collider (LHC) was exposed to proton-proton collisions from beams crossing at 40 MHz. A three-level trigger system will select potentially interesting events in order to reduce this rate to 100- 200 Hz. A trigger decision is made by the Level-1 central trigger processor (CTP) reducing the incoming rate to less than 100 kHz. The Level-1 decision is based on calorimeter information and hits in dedicated muon trigger detectors. The final Level-1 trigger system is currently being installed in the experiment with completion expected in autumn 2007.
