The Endcap Disc DIRC detector of PANDA

Abstract At the international FAIR laboratory, an upcoming significant enlargement of the GSI installations near Darmstadt, Germany, the PANDA antiproton experiment will investigate fundamental questions of hadron physics in the charm quark energy range. Antiprotons in the 1.5 to15 GeV/c momentum range will interact with gas jet or pellet fixed targets. The Endcap Disc DIRC (Detection of Internally Reflected Cherenkov light) covers the forward endcap solid angle of the PANDA target spectrometer to positively identify charged kaons. Monte-Carlo simulations indicate that from 1 up to 4 GeV/c one can achieve kaon–pion separation with a separation power of at least 3 standard deviations. For th…
A $B_4C$-silicon target for the detection of neutrino interactions

This note describes the construction of a target for neutrino interactions composed of passive boron carbide plates interleaved with silicon microstrip detectors. The target contains four layers of passive material with a total mass of 45 kg and 600 single--sided silicon microstrip detectors with a total surface of 1.14 m$^2$ distributed over five layers. It is installed in the NOMAD spectrometer at the CERN SPS neutrino beam. During the 1997 run about 8000 \nm\ charged current interactions were estimated to have occurred in the target. Alignment of the NOMAD-STAR detector

Abstract This note describes the alignment of the NOMAD-STAR detector. This is the B 4 C-silicon target installed in the NOMAD spectrometer in 1997. NOMAD-STAR is composed of modules of 12 silicon detectors each giving a total length of 72 cm. Ten of these modules (called ladders) are assembled to form a layer. There are five layers interleaved with passive boron carbide plates. The total surface of silicon is 1.14 m 2 . Energetic muons from the flat-top of the CERN SPS cycle provide the necessary information to perform a very precise software alignment. Optimal β-beam at the CERN-SPS

In this talk, based on the work [J. Burguet-Castell et al., Nucl. Phys. B 725 (2005) 306], we present an analysis of the sensitivity to the mixing angle θ 13 and the CP-violating phase δ that could be achieved by a β-beam experiment based at the SPS accelerator at CERN. We estimate the optimal γ boost of the 6He and 18Ne ions for the proposed baseline CERN-Frejus (130 km), and also perform a simultaneous optimization of the ion boost and the baseline. A possible improvement of the current SPS accelerator is considered as well. A portable readout system for silicon microstrip sensors

Abstract This system can measure the collected charge in one or two microstrip silicon sensors by reading out all the channels of the sensor(s), up to 256. The system is able to operate with different types (p- and n-type) and different sizes (up to 3 cm 2 ) of microstrip silicon sensors, both irradiated and non-irradiated. Heavily irradiated sensors will be used at the Super Large Hadron Collider, so this system can be used to research the performance of microstrip silicon sensors in conditions as similar as possible to the Super Large Hadron Collider operating conditions. Radiation damage of heavy crystalline detector materials by 24GeV protons

Abstract Samples of three heavy crystalline materials: PbWO4, Bi4Si3O12, and PbF2 were irradiated in a high-intensity 24 GeV proton beam at the CERN PS to fluencies of 3.8×1013 protons/cm2. The optical transmission radiation damage was measured and all crystals show a shift of the cutoff in the transmission spectrum that is not observed when the crystals are irradiated with γ radiation. This shift of the cutoff under proton irradiation seems to be a general property of the heavy crystalline materials. A mechanism for this proton-induced transmission damage is discussed.
Anomalous electromagnetic moments of τ lepton in γγ → τ+τ− reaction in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC

We discuss the sensitivity of the γγ→τ+τ− process in ultraperipheral Pb+Pb collisions on the anomalous magnetic (aτ) and electric (dτ) moments of τ lepton at LHC energies. We derive the corresponding cross sections by folding the elementary cross section with the heavy-ion photon fluxes and considering semi-leptonic decays of both τ leptons in the fiducial volume of ATLAS and CMS detectors. We present predictions for total and differential cross sections, and for the ratios to γγ→e+e−(μ+μ−) process. These ratios allow to cancel theoretical and experimental uncertainties when performing precision measurements at the LHC. The expected limits on aτ with existing Pb+Pb dataset are found to be b…

EMMA – a new underground cosmic-ray experiment

An experiment observing underground muons originating from cosmic-ray air showers is under preparation in the Pyhasalmi mine, Finland. The aim is to cover an area of about 200-300 m(2), and the detector setup is capable of measuring the muon multiplicity and their lateral distribution. The detector is placed at a depth of about 85 m (corresponding about 240 m w.e.), which gives a threshold energy of muons of about 45 GeV. The detection of the multimuon events is motivated by partly unknown composition of the primary cosmic rays in the energy region of 10(15)-10(16) eV, i.e., the knee region. Spectra and ratios of identified particles in Au+Au andd+Au collisions atsNN=200GeV

The transverse momentum (p(T)) spectra and ratios of identified charged hadrons (pi(+/-), K-+/-, p, (p) over bar) produced in root s(NN) = 200 GeV Au + Au and d + Au collisions are reported in five different centrality classes for each collision species. The measurements of pions and protons are reported up to p(T) = 6 GeV/c (5 GeV/c), and the measurements of kaons are reported up to p(T) = 4 GeV/c (3.5 GeV/c) in Au + Au (d + Au) collisions. In the intermediate p(T) region, between 2 and 5 GeV/c, a significant enhancement of baryon-to-meson ratios compared to those measured in p + p collisions is observed.
