The colovescical fistula in diverticular disease: Laparoscopic approach in two different cases

Highlights • The colovescical fistula is one of the complications of diverticular disease. • It can cause typical symptoms like pneumaturia and fecaluria affecting the quality of life and sometimes leading to death, usually secondary to sepsis. • We studied two patients with clinical, radiological and endoscopic diagnosis of colovescical fistula as a consequence of diverticular disease. • We performed a totally laparoscopic treatment with colonic resection and closure of the fistula with intracorporeal sutures. • The presence of a colovescical fistula significantly increases the difficult of the laparoscopic colonic resection.

Dark-adapted human subjects arranged a collection of colored papers in a sequence according to their lightness. The sequence of the papers (which appeared gray to the subjects) varied under different illuminant spectra. These variations could be predicted quantitatively from the radiometric data and human scotopic spectral sensitivity. By substitution of natural daylight spectra in the computation it was shown that monochromats cannot perceive lightness reliably under the changing illuminant spectra of our planet. The paper offers a contribution to the study of Lilibeo’s figured vases, which make extensive use of added color. The examination of some contexts allows us to clarify the old idea of a derivation of the Lilibetane vases from the workshops of Lipari, due to a displacement of artisans who would operate first in Lipari and then in Lilibeo (like the Swans Painter). It is not completely excludes the movement of craftsmen due to destructions or political changes. However it reconstructs complex interactions in which a main role had to play the influence and the action of medium exercised by the same imported artifacts (Lipari vases, mainly, but not only).
Meta-analysis of mismatch repair polymorphisms within the cogent consortium for colorectal cancer susceptibility

In the last four years, Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) have identified sixteen low-penetrance polymorphisms on fourteen different loci associated with colorectal cancer (CRC). Due to the low risks conferred by known common variants, most of the 35% broad-sense heritability estimated by twin studies remains unexplained. Recently our group performed a case-control study for eight Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) in 4 CRC genes. The present investigation is a followup of that study. Background: Liver cirrhosis increases portal vein pressure and alters the splanchnic circulation. With Doppler sonography, we investigated the hemodynamic changes in the portal vein, superior mesenteric artery, hepatic and splenic arteries and spleen size in a group of patients with end-stage liver disease before and after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). Color Doppler Ultrasound in Portal Hypertension

Portal hypertension is one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality in cirrhotic patients. A color Doppler evaluation of the left gastric vein (LGV) has proven utility in the prediction of esophageal varices and variceal bleeding in patients with portal hypertension. The purpose of this review is to discuss the ultrasound evaluation, imaging findings, and clinical application of Doppler ultrasound in the assessment of the LGV. Knowledge of the color Doppler technique and imaging findings of the LGV may help clinicians improve the monitoring of portal hypertension and predict patients with a high risk of esophageal varices.
