Adding ‘Sense’ to Conceptual Modeling : An Interdisciplinary Approach
2019
In this paper, our aim is to widen the prevailing foundations of conceptual modeling theories and practices, particularly in the context of information systems development. The approach shifts the focus from the link between a model and the modelled reality to the link between human cognition and the model. Our approach combines theoretical issues of different disciplines relevant to conceptual modeling. We shall make an explicit distinction between individual conceptions and interpersonal concepts and show how this distinction could be utilized to have conceptual models of a better consistency. We wish that this article could also serve as a starting point for a profound scientific discuss…
Modelling contexts in cross-cultural communication environments
2011
In our research, context is defined as a situation a user has at hand. The focus in our study is on modelling contexts in cross-cultural communication environments. These environments can be physical, virtual or hybrid. Crosscultural communication environment – user – situation is the key triplet in our context research. In our paper we discuss context as a key to situation-specific computing. We introduce our cross-cultural communication context tree and context flow architecture and an example of implementation i.e. Context-Based eAssistant for Cross-Cultural Communication (CeACCC). peerReviewed
Is There a Need for New Marketing Communications Performance Metrics for Social Media?
2011
The objective of this paper is to develop a conceptual framework for measuring the effectiveness of social media marketing communications. With recent advances in information and communications technology, especially in social collaboration technologies, both academics and practitioners rethink whether the existing marketing communications performance metrics are still valid in the changing communications landscape, or is it time to devise entirely new metrics for measuring marketing communications performance. The study emphasizes that marketing communications performance measurement metrics have developed towards a customer orientation. The findings further indicate that a) there is no br…
Perceptions of content marketing : case study on Finnish companies
2015
The discipline of marketing has gone through some major changes over the past couple of decades. The power is moving away from companies to consumers, who are playing a more significant role than ever before. Furthermore, the increasing number of marketing channels and the digitalization of media create not only challenges but also opportunities for companies. These shifts in the environment have actually made content marketing to be one of the most popular concepts in marketing today. Content marketing is by no means a new concept, but the recent digital tools in marketing have changed the concept and made it more popular among marketers around the world. Content marketing is and has been …
Challenges in Marketing Communications During the COVID-19 Pandemic
2022
The purpose of this study is to explore how tourism and hospitality firms managed marketing communications (marcom) since the COVID-19 outbreak and to propose a conceptual framework on marcom challenges that the pandemic crisis has brought to the industry. In-depth interviews were conducted with tourism and hospitality managers in Croatia, a destination that registered remarkable tourism results in 2021. The proposed conceptual framework reflects the adaptation process and major changes in B2B and B2C communication since the COVID-19 outbreak on one hand and resulting strategic opportunities for marcom managers on the other, discussed in terms of practical implications. To the best of the a…
Predicting response to interpersonal counselling (IPC) from case formulation : a systematic comparison between recovered and unchanged depressive cas…
2019
We sought to explore how the process between the counsellor and patient for arriving at a case formulation may predict the outcome of manualized interpersonal counselling (IPC) for depression in primary care. Qualitative content analysis and applied conversation analysis (CA) were used to achieve depth in the understanding of case formulation process among five patients who recovered and five who were unchanged according to quantitative post-treatment change rates derived from Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation– Outcome Measure (CORE-OM). Interaction in the case formulations for the recovered group was generally characterized by a joint construction effort between the counsellor and th…
Altered EEG Oscillatory Brain Networks During Music-Listening in Major Depression
2021
To examine the electrophysiological underpinnings of the functional networks involved in music listening, previous approaches based on spatial independent component analysis (ICA) have recently been used to ongoing electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG). However, those studies focused on healthy subjects, and failed to examine the group-level comparisons during music listening. Here, we combined group-level spatial Fourier ICA with acoustic feature extraction, to enable group comparisons in frequency-specific brain networks of musical feature processing. It was then applied to healthy subjects and subjects with major depressive disorder (MDD). The music-induced oscil…
My emotions expressed by music
2014
Improvisational psychodynamic music therapy (IPMT) has been demonstrated by Erkkilä et al. (2011) to be effective in the treatment for people suffering from depression. For the purpose of a mixed methods research design all musical improvisations have been captured electronically, the therapist’s notes have been standardized, and the sessions have been recorded and saved. Furthermore, the research team of the university of Jyväskylä has developed a computational analysis software, called Music Therapy Toolbox (MTTB). The purpose of this master’s thesis was to investigate two improvisations from one case in-depth, through the use of the MTTB software. The findings are presented, as well as t…
Security in Modern Smart Cities: An Information Technology Perspective
2019
In a big and modern city, the security system is not a single-layered single module system. Instead, it consists of many layers with autonomous subsystems which are capable of interfacing reciprocally in an efficient and coordinated way horizontally and vertically. The design of such indigenous subsystems and ensuring tight interaction between them while taking into account high usability and resource utilization is not a simple task. In this regard, this article provides a comprehensive overview of the security systems in smart cities. We begin by introducing trends and key stakeholders in smart cities. Next, we provide examples of mass surveillance systems in developed countries like the …
