Higher education teachers' descriptions of their own learning : large scale study of Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences

In this large-scale study, higher education teachers’ descriptions of their own learning were examined with qualitative analysis involving application of principles of phenomenographic research. This study is unique: it is unusual to use large-scale data in qualitative studies. The data were collected through an e-mail survey sent to 5960 teachers at universities of applied sciences in Finland. The number of respondents was 1622. Social embeddedness, defined as the interaction of economic activities and social behavior, is used in this study as a conceptual tool to describe the growing phenomenon of food community networks (FCNs). The aim in this paper was to map the system of relations which the FCNs develop both inside and outside the network and, from the number of relations, it was inferred the influence of each FCN upon the formation of new socially embedded economic realities. On the evidence of local court rolls, this paper studies the patters of violence in a valencian small town oriented to a great extent toward agrarian activities. It was especially a structural and daily violence, that usually it was not caused by habitual criminals but by common people and even by members of the ruling group. Abuse of force usually taked place from poweful to weak (from richs to poors, from masters to serviants, from husbands to wives, from christians to muslims), so that these forms of violence reaffirmed internal hierarchies that divided local community.

The downsizing of psychiatric hospitals has created a new institutional landscape in the local community to support people with severe mental problems in their daily living. This study explores meeting places in Norway from the users' perspectives. The users used four metaphors to describe these meeting places: "like a home", "like a family", "like a landing ground" and "like a trampoline". The users have decorated the interiors of the meeting places with hearts made from various materials, and these could be considered as symbols of the places. The chapter outlines contemporary social welfare activities of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Ghana and Burkina Faso.
