Conditional predictive inference for online surveillance of spatial disease incidence

2011

This paper deals with the development of statistical methodology for timely detection of incident disease clusters in space and time. The increasing availability of data on both the time and the location of events enables the construction of multivariate surveillance techniques, which may enhance the ability to detect localized clusters of disease relative to the surveillance of the overall count of disease cases across the entire study region. We introduce the surveillance conditional predictive ordinate as a general Bayesian model-based surveillance technique that allows us to detect small areas of increased disease incidence when spatial data are available. To address the problem of mult…

Emotions of music listening in Finland and in India : Comparison of an individualistic and a collectivistic culture

2020

Music is appreciated for emotional reasons across cultures, but knowledge on the cross-cultural similarities and differences of music-evoked emotions is still sparse. The current study compared music-evoked emotions in Finland and in India, contextualizing them within the perceived psychological functionality of music in an individualistic versus collectivistic culture. Participants ( N = 230) answered an online survey on music-evoked emotions and related personal meanings. A mixed-method approach using factor analysis and qualitative content analysis was used to identify the concepts for cross-cultural comparison. Results show that both cultures value music for positive emotional experien…

A distribution curves comparison approach to analyze the university moving students performance

2018

Battery- and Petrol-Powered Chainsaws: An Investigation of Productivity in Conifer Thinning

2023

In recent years, battery technology has been greatly improved and some types of battery chainsaws are currently comparable with light-type petrol machines, suggesting their possible introduction into forest operations. In this context, the aim of this study was to test and compare the performance, in a Douglas-fir thinning, of two chainsaws similar in terms of weight and power, the Stihl MS 220 CB battery-powered saw and the Stihl MS 201 CM petrol-powered saw, measuring the working times and calculating the productivities. The results showed that, within a working day (about 6 h gross time), an average of 15 trees of 0.56 m3 was felled in each area. No statistically significant differences …

Improved pairwise comparison transitivity using strategically selected reduced information

2021

To judge the mutual relationship among elements, pairwise comparisons (PC) are widely used in decision modelling. PC is especially useful when the involved elements are intangible. Frequently, the number of elements to be compared may be very large. When dealing with n elements, the number of PCs is, under the reciprocity hypothesis, n(n − 1)/2. PCs are compiled in so-called pairwise comparison matrices (PCM). In the presence of missing entries due to uncertainty or lack of information, decision-making must be performed from the available incomplete information. Making all the comparisons in the complete case may be tedious, strenuous and time-consuming for the actors, may blur the body of …

Mathematics Competence Level: The Contribution of Non-symbolic and Spatial Magnitude Comparison Skills.

2019

Magnitude comparison skills have been related to mathematics competence, although results in this area vary. The current study aimed to describe the performance of 75 children (aged 4-5 years) in two comparison tasks; and examine the strength of the relationship between each of the two tasks and mathematics competence level (MCL). Participants were assessed with the Early Numeracy Test which provides a global MCL score. Magnitude comparison skills were assessed with two tasks: a non-symbolic number comparison task and a spatial comparison task. Results of the Pearson correlation analysis showed a relationship between the two tasks with better performance in the spatial comparison task. Regr…

Clinical assessment and comparison of ACL reconstruction using synthetic graft (Neoligaments versus FiberTape).

2021

Background Due to the low potential for primary biological healing of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), the most popular approach is currently reconstruction using a graft. Recent research indicates that the technique of strengthening a damaged ligament with synthetic tapes (internal bracing) may be an alternative to reconstructive treatment, especially in cases of partial ACL damage. Objectives To compare and evaluate the possibility of using a synthetic graft (Neoligaments or FiberTape) to treat partial lesions of the ACL. Material and methods This was a retrospective cohort study. Selected from a pool of 128 patients undergoing primary unilateral intra-articular ACL reconstruction du…

Subtropical streams harbour higher genus richness and lower abundance of insects compared to boreal streams, but scale matters

2018

Aim: Biological diversity typically varies between climatically different regions, and regions closer to the equator often support higher numbers of taxa than those closer to the poles. However, these trends have been assessed for a few organism groups, and the existing studies have rarely been based on extensive identical surveys in different climatic regions. Location: We conducted standardized surveys of wadeable streams in a boreal (western Finland) and a subtropical (south-eastern Brazil) region, sampling insects identically from 100 streams in each region and measuring the same environmental variables in both regions. Taxon: Aquatic insects. Methods: Comparisons were made at the scale…

Prioritization of Alternatives with AHP Plus Response Latency and Web Surveys

2013

Purpose: Overcome some drawbacks of the widely applied Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) related to the use of a rating scale for respondent’s judgments and propose a new method to prioritize alternatives based on web surveys. Methodology/Approach: We use the response latency, i.e. the time taken to make a decision, to replace the rating scale in the pairwise comparisons which is a fundamental part of the AHP procedure. A method combining the AHP with a mathematical model for the response latency is proposed in the paper. Findings: Eliminating the rating scale and leaving only the “take the best” task alleviates the respondent and makes the survey much faster and intuitive. Moreover the re…
