Effect of Palletized Map Storage on the Quality and Nutritional Compounds of the Japanese Plum cv. Angeleno (Prunus salicina Lindl.)

2016

The influence of active modified atmosphere packaging MAP (10.0 kPa of O2 and 5 kPa of CO2) on palletized system was evaluated to extend the marketability of fresh plums cv. Angeleno. Fruits were wrapped with a polyethylene film in pallet bag units at 1C and 90% relative humidity for up to 60 days. The gas values of the pallet bags, the fruit weight losses and their qualitative and nutraceutical characteristics were periodically monitored to evaluate the goodness of storage. The results showed as the pallet bag have maintained the market life of Angeleno plums to up to 60 days, preserving the most important qualitative traits of fruits. After 20, 40 and 60 days the MAP treatment maintained …

The performance of thin layers produced by molecular plating as α-particle sources

2013

Abstract Sources for α-spectroscopy studies were prepared. Constant current density molecular plating was used to produce layers containing the α-particle emitter 147 Sm. Different parameters of the molecular plating process were varied, namely the plating solvent (an isopropanol/isobutanol mixture, pyridine, and N , N -dimethylformamide), the applied deposition time (90, 180, and 360 min), and the surface roughness of the deposition substrate (ca. 10, 20, and 300 nm). Using different analytical techniques, Sm deposition yields, chemical composition of the produced surfaces, surface homogeneity, roughness and morphology were investigated. Alpha spectra were recorded with a Si solid-state de…

Paraplangia sinespeculo, a new genus and species of bush-cricket, with notes on its biology and a key to the genera of Phaneropterinae (Orthoptera: T…

2018

Madagascar is a well-known hotspot of biodiversity. However, many Orthoptera, and especially the Tettigonioidea, belong to little-studied groups. Here we describe a new genus and species of bush-cricket reared from field-collected eggs.Paraplangiasinespeculogen. nov., sp. nov. belongs to Phaneropterinae and shares diagnostic characteristics with members of the tribe Amblycoryphini and its African subtribe Plangiina stat. nov.Paraplangia, which has a chromosome number of 31 X0, differs from other African members of the tribe and subtribe such asEurycoryphaandPlangia, which both have 29 X0. In addition to morphology, we describe the male calling song, female acoustic response, and mating beha…

Telomere Length and Frailty: The Helsinki Birth Cohort Study

2018

Objectives: Telomere length is associated with aging-related pathologies. Although the association between telomere length and frailty has been studied previously, only a few studies assessing longitudinal changes in telomere length and frailty exist. Design: Longitudinal cohort study. Setting and participants: A subpopulation of the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study consisting of 1078 older adults aged 67 to 79 years born in Helsinki, Finland, between 1934 and 1944. Measures: Relative leukocyte telomere length (LTL) was measured using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction at the average ages of 61 and 71 years, and at the latter the participants were assessed for frailty according to …

Lauroyl peroxide as thermal initiator of lauryl methacrylate monolithic columns for CEC

2008

The preparation of lauryl methacrylate (LMA)-based monolithic columns for CEC using lauroyl peroxide (LPO) as thermal initiator of polymerization has been investigated. The influence of initiator amount and composition of porogenic solvent on the physical and electrochromatographic properties of the resulting LMA-based monoliths was evaluated. A comparison with LMA-based columns thermally polymerized with AIBN was performed. At a given porogenic solvent composition, LMA stationary phases initiated with LPO showed higher permeabilities and better efficiency values than those prepared using AIBN as initiator. The optimum polymerization mixture found for LPO initiator provided a minimum plate …

Chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of some oleogum resin essential oils from Boswellia spp. (Burseraceae).

2007

The chemical composition of Boswellia carteri (Somalia), B. papyrifera (Ethiopia), B. serrata (India) and B. rivae (Ethiopia) oleogum resin essential oils was investigated using GC-MS to identify chemotaxonomy marker components. Total ion current peak areas gave good approximations to relative concentrations based on GC-MS peak areas. B. carteri and B. serrata oleogum resin oils showed similar chemical profiles, with isoincensole and isoincensole acetate as the main diterpenic components. Both n-octanol and n-octyl acetate, along with the diterpenic components incensole and incensole acetate, were the characteristic compounds of B. papyrifera oleogum resin oil. Hydrocarbon and oxygenated mo…

Liver carbohydrate and lipid metabolism of insulin-deficient mice is altered by trans-10, cis-12 conjugated linoleic acid.

2009

Feeding mice the trans-10, cis-12 (t10c12) conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) isomer is associated with lipodystrophy, insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, and liver steatosis. It has been hypothesized that CLA-induced liver steatosis is the result of increased hepatic lipogenesis stimulated by high insulin levels. We studied the effects of a 12-d t10c12CLA treatment (1 g/100 g diet) on liver carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in control and streptozotocin (STZ)-injected mice. STZ mice were characterized by insulin deficiency, hypertriglyceridemia, and depletion of liver triglyceride and glycogen. Remarkably, feeding t10c12CLA to diabetic mice (STZ-CLA) normalized these variables. Reconstitutio…

Chemical composition of the essential oils of Centaurea sicana and C. giardinae growing wild in Sicily

2008

The essential oils of Centaurea sicana (S) and C. giardinae (G) were studied by GC and GC-MS. Thirty constituents for S, representing 81.5% of the total oil, and 24 compounds for G (94.2% of the total) were identified. The oils were rich in sesquiterpenoids (47.9% for S and 54.7% for G) and hydrocarbons (25.9% for S and 31.7% for G). Germacrene D (13.3%), ( E)-β-farnesene (8.3%), nonacosane (7.3%), heptacosane (6.5%) and phytol (6%) were recognized as the main constituents for S, while caryophyllene oxide (17.7%), nonacosane (14.5%), germacrene D (11.5%), caryophyllene (11.2%) and heptacosane (10.3%) were the main compounds for G.

Nutritional assessment in preterm infants with special reference to body composition

2001

In recent years, improvements in care have significantly improved survival in preterm and, particularily, the very low birth weight infant (VLBW). While immediate survival can be directly related to pulmonary maturity, several studies stress the importance of timely and adequate nutrition in these high-risk infants on a short- and long-term [1]. Yet, nutritional support remains a very controversial issue in these high-risk infants. Early provision of adequate intakes may be limited by clinical instability and immaturity. At the same time, nutritional requirements and methods of nutritional assessment are not well defined. The aim of this paper is to outline some of the methods used during n…
