Realism Score for Immersive Virtual Reality Systems and Driving Simulators

International audience; Traditional 2D or 3D quality assessment methods are not sufficient to assess the realism of the outputs of a simulator/immersive virtual reality system. We propose an assessment method based on a scoring system through a new approach. The objective of this paper is to propose a score scale for any simulator or immersive display system that would represent how close to the human visual system the signals that are sent through the display are. Weighted items considered are contrast, acuity, frames per seconds, brightness, field of view and the number of color available.
A Multistep Methodology for the Evaluation of Human Resources Using the Evidence Theory

The paper aims at proposing a model for the human resources evaluation as regards to a set of skills. Specifically, it starts sfrom the judgments expressed by a team of experts on the basis of their previous working experiences with the resource to be evaluated. Information arising from experts is successively handled by the analyst and aggregated to determine the resource suitability or unsuitability. The Dempster–Shafer theory is proposed here as an appropriate tool to deal with both the uncertainty of experts due to the incomplete knowledge about resources to be evaluated and that of the analyst to convert expert judgments in terms of resource suitability/unsuitability. In this paper, we will investigate the possible role of fuzzy set theory (FST), and more generally the ensemble of technologies and theoretical approaches known as soft computing, as a methodological bridge between hard sciences and humanities. We will try, building on previous works, to investigate the “family links” between these disciplines and show how FST may be of help in promoting a connection between the “two cultures”. We will discuss Carnap and his paradox of explication, the dilemma between imagination and rigor according to Bateson, the problem of interdisciplinarity, and the consequences of precision and exactness. Inferring intentions through state representations in cooperative human-robot environments

Humans and robots working safely and seamlessly together in a cooperative environment is one of the future goals of the robotics community. When humans and robots can work together in the same space, a whole class of tasks becomes amenable to automation, ranging from collaborative assembly to parts and material handling to delivery. Proposed standards exist for collaborative human-robot safety, but they focus on limiting the approach distances and contact forces between the human and the robot. Abstract:Given the sharp distinction that follows from Hume’s Fork, the proper epistemic status of propositions of mixed mathematics seems to be a mystery. On the one hand, mathematical propositions concern the relation of ideas. They are intuitive and demonstratively certain. On the other hand, propositions of mixed mathematics, such as in Hume’s own example, the law of conservation of momentum, are also matter of fact propositions. Variable Step Size P&O Algorithms for Coalescing Pump/Deoiling Hydrocyclone Produced Water Treatment System

This paper presents three variable step size P&O algorithms for optimizing the separation efficiency of a coalescing pump/deoiling hydrocyclone produced water treatment system. By continuously adjusting the pumping pressure, and subsequently the coalescing effect, the algorithms are used to minimize the oil concentration downstream the hydrocyclone. Due to the variable step size, the algorithms react rapidly to changes in the upstream produced water characteristics, at the same time as they reduce (or eliminate) steady-state oscillations. Based on both simulation and experimental testing, the study discusses advantages and disadvantages of the algorithms.
An Efficient Algorithm for Helly Property Recognition in a Linear Hypergraph

International audience; In this article we characterize bipartite graphs whose associated neighborhood hypergraphs have the Helly property. We examine incidence graphs both hypergraphs and linear hypergraphs and we give a polynomial algorithm to recognize if a linear hypergraph has the Helly property.
