ICT-SUSTOUR and MARKETOUR: Two second language acquisition projects through a virtual learning environment

2009

We are presenting a methodological approach that aims to increase students' motivation by asking them to develop tasks based on professional settings. In order to meet this objective a collaborative methodology was designed and applied to two multidisciplinary projects: MARKETOUR and ICT-SUSTOUR. Both projects made students face real workplace situations by working collaboratively through the use of a virtual learning environment (VLE) and other information technology (IT) tools at a national and international level. The methodology proposed offers students a professional scenario in which they are required to develop purpose-based tasks using IT. A virtual learning environment was devised …

Student knowledge and learning skill modeling in the learning environment `forces'In order to prevent further delays in publication this paper has be…

1998

Abstract In this paper we present a student module modeling knowledge states and learning skills of students in the field of Newtonian dynamics. Student data recorded during the exploratory activity in microworlds are used to infer mental representations concerning the concept of force. A fuzzy algorithm able to follow the cognitive states the student goes through in solving a task and to interpret the monitored changes is discussed.

Re-Infrastructuring for eHealth: Dealing with Turns in Infrastructure Development

2017

In this paper, we examine infrastructuring in the context of developing national, public eHealth services in Norway. Specifically, we analyze the work of a project team engaged in the design and development of new web-based capabilities for communication between citizens and primary healthcare practitioners. We frame the case as a study of re-infrastructuring to signify a particular occasion of infrastructuring that entails facilitating a new logic within established social and technological networks. To make sense of the particularities of re-infrastructuring, we draw from research in infrastructure studies which considers embeddedness as a resource in infrastructure evolution. We analyze …

Teachers’ information and communication technology competences: A structural approach

2016

Teachers' information and communication technology (ICT) competences are a key variable to integrate such resources into the teaching-learning process. One problem with teachers' ICT competences is the proliferation of various frameworks which entail a lack of definition of these competences. The objective of this article is twofold: to establish a basic framework that shapes the subsets of ICT competences (technological and pedagogical) in all teachers at all levels (Primary, Secondary and Higher Education); to determine how various personal and contextual factors influence these subsets. For this purpose, a study of secondary analysis has been made with data from two survey design studies…

Barriers to the use of mobile sales force automation systems: a salesperson’s perspective

2015

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the barriers associated with the adoption and use of mobile sales force automation (SFA) systems from a salesperson’s perspective. Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative investigation of two business-to-business companies was conducted. Data collected from ten semi-structured interviews with directors or sales managers were analyzed to understand the main barriers to SFA system adoption. Findings – The study confirms the existence of three barriers (customer knowledge, quality of information and the characteristics of mobile devices) to a mobile SFA system use and identifies two additional barriers: lack of time and optimization issues…

Web technologies and multi-criterion analysis used in enterprise integration

2011

The studies, research and solutions presented below started from the acute need of small and medium-sized enterprises to integrate their processes, services and relationships with customers and suppliers, in a cost-effective manner, given the fact that ERP systems are quite expensive for such organizations.

Expanding possibilities: Project work using ICT

2005

www.humantechnology.jyu.fi; One of the main findings from the SITES Module 2 study internationally is the increased use of project work connected to the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in many countries around the world. The Norwegian cases presented in this article support these findings, showing that when teachers and students use ICT in school settings, it is most often part of project work. However, there is a need to analyze to a larger degree the project work using ICT. In this article, project work using ICT is analyzed firstly by studying the changes in learning environment that the technology represents or as a catalyst for physical changes in the spaces in…

Using Social Networks to Enhance Customer Relationship Management

2013

International audience; In recent years, the Web has evolved into an exchange platform. Customer Relationship Management (CRM) must follow this evolution and connect CRM tools to social networks in order to place companies in the center of all the exchanges. We propose, in this article, a community detection approach that identi fies clusters of customers of a company using their explicit and implicit behaviour. Our contribution is the definition of a composite pro le that integrates various informations gathered from di erent applications, such as the information system of the company, the existing CRM, or Twitter. We de ne a similarity measure, between a user and a tag, that takes into ac…

A hybrid scheme for action representation

1993

Strong deficiencies are present in symbolic models for action representation and planning, regarding mainly the difficulty of coping with real, complex environments. These deficiencies can be attributed to several problems, such as the inadequacy in coping with incompletely structured situations, the difficulty of interacting with visual and motorial aspects, the difficulty in representing low-level knowledge, the need to specify the problem at a high level of detail, and so on. Besides the purely symbolic approaches, several nonsymbolic models have been developed, such as the recent class of subsym-bolic techniques. A promising paradigm for the modeling of reasoning, which combines feature…

Knowledge-driven multi-agent simulation engineering for assessing the effectiveness of disaster management plans

2020

Protecting humans from disasters has been an active mission of governments and experts through the definition of disaster management plans. Defining disaster response strategies is crucial in order to reduce the number of victims and the economic impact. In order to select which response plan is best suited to a specific disaster situation, these plans must be evaluated. However, such evaluation is limited by the high cost of exercises and the specificity of existing simulation models. The approach defended in this thesis combines techniques from Semantic Web and multi-agent simulation to evaluate disaster management response plans. It is composed of four steps : (1) modeling disaster manag…
