Divided attention in music

Two models have been advanced to account for the apparent ease with which attention can be divided in music: a “divided attention” model postulates that listeners effectively manage to follow two or more melodic lines played simultaneously. According to a “figure-ground model,” the harmonic coherence of Western polyphonies allows a listener to focus on one melody while staying aware of the other melody, which acts as a background. Simulating music with associative self-organizing maps

Abstract We present an architecture able to recognise pitches and to internally simulate likely continuations of partially heard melodies. Our architecture consists of a novel version of the Associative Self-Organizing Map (A-SOM) with generalized ancillary connections. We tested the performance of our architecture with melodies from a publicly available database containing 370 Bach chorale melodies. The results showed that the architecture could learn to represent and perfectly simulate the remaining 20% of three different interrupted melodies when using a context length of 8 centres of activity in the A-SOM. CD28, a marker associated with tumoral expansion in multiple myeloma

International audience; CD28 expression was thoroughly investigated on plasma cells of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance, multiple myeloma (MM), and human myeloma cell lines. CD28+ plasma cells were detected in 19% of 31 monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance, 41% of 116 MM, and 100% of 13 human myeloma cell lines. CD28+ myeloma cells were detected in 21 of 79 (26%) MM cases at diagnosis, 13 of 22 (59%) at medullary relapse (P < 0.009), and 14 of 15 (93%) at extramedullary relapse (P = 0.05), including 10 of 10 (100%) secondary plasma cell leukemias (P = 0.05). The recent advances in computer graphics and digitization allow access to an ever finer three-dimensional modelling of the world. The critical challenges with 3D models lie in their transmission and rendering, which must fit the heterogeneity of the end resources (network bandwidth, display terminals . . . ). Dynamical features of forest interactions

Abstract The 3D computer simulations presented here were developed to study at the mesoscopic scale the formation of junctions and their impact on hardening of crystals. The simulations consider the evolution of a dislocation interacting with immobile dislocations in a fcc single crystal of copper where we incorporate well known dislocation interaction mechanisms. From these studies, we deduced a `breaking angle' which characterize the strength of the junctions.

Using On-Demand File Systems in HPC Environments

In modern HPC systems, parallel (distributed) file systems are used to allow fast access from and to the storage infrastructure. However, I/O performance in large-scale HPC systems has failed to keep up with the increase in computational power. As a result, the I/O subsystem which also has to cope with a large number of demanding metadata operations is often the bottleneck of the entire HPC system. In some cases, even a single bad behaving application can be held responsible for slowing down the entire HPC system, disrupting other applications that use the same I/O subsystem. Reliable Detection and Smart Deletion of Malassez Counting Chamber Grid in Microscopic White Light Images for Microbiological Applications

AbstractIn biology, hemocytometers such as Malassez slides are widely used and are effective tools for counting cells manually. In a previous work, a robust algorithm was developed for grid extraction in Malassez slide images. This algorithm was evaluated on a set of 135 images and grids were accurately detected in most cases, but there remained failures for the most difficult images. In this work, we present an optimization of this algorithm that allows for 100% grid detection and a 25% improvement in grid positioning accuracy. How to control stock markets

This paper provides a different approach to the analysis of imperfect stock markets. The model we are concerned with is described by the interaction of three institutional classes of agents (the specialist trader, the professional trader and the non-professional trader), sharing different information. The dynamical discrete-time system obtained can be changed into a second-order linear difference equation forced by the fundamental value of the specialist trader. Using typical tools of control theory, we study the behaviour of the professional trader’s fundamental value influenced by the specialist’s one. © 1994 Taylor &amp; Francis Group, LLC.
