Protein diffusion in mammalian cell cytoplasm.

2011

We introduce a new method for mesoscopic modeling of protein diffusion in an entire cell. This method is based on the construction of a three-dimensional digital model cell from confocal microscopy data. The model cell is segmented into the cytoplasm, nucleus, plasma membrane, and nuclear envelope, in which environment protein motion is modeled by fully numerical mesoscopic methods. Finer cellular structures that cannot be resolved with the imaging technique, which significantly affect protein motion, are accounted for in this method by assigning an effective, position-dependent porosity to the cell. This porosity can also be determined by confocal microscopy using the equilibrium distribut…

k-Space filtering in 2D gradient-echo breath-hold hyperpolarized3He MRI: Spatial resolution and signal-to-noise ratio considerations

2002

In this work some of the factors that can influence the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and spatial resolution in MR images of inhaled hyperpolarized gases are systematically addressed. In particular, the effects of RF depletion of longitudinal polarization and image gradient diffusion dephasing were assessed in terms of their contribution to a k-space filter. By means of theoretical simulations and a novel method of experimental validation using a variable transverse magnetization of the 1H signal, systematic quantitative and qualitative investigations of the effects of k-space filtering intrinsic to imaging of hyperpolarized gas were made. A 2D gradient-echo image is considered for a range of…

A Novel Approach to Propagation Pattern Analysis in Intracardiac Atrial Fibrillation Signals

2010

The purpose of this study is to investigate propagation patterns in intracardiac signals recorded during atrial fibrillation (AF) using an approach based on partial directed coherence (PDC), which evaluates directional coupling between multiple signals in the frequency domain. The PDC is evaluated at the dominant frequency of AF signals and tested for significance using a surrogate data procedure specifically designed to assess causality. For significantly coupled sites, the approach allows also to estimate the delay in propagation. The methods potential is illustrated with two simulation scenarios based on a detailed ionic model of the human atrial myocyte as well as with real data recordi…

Textureless macula swelling detection with multiple retinal fundus images

2011

Retinal fundus images acquired with nonmydriatic digital fundus cameras are versatile tools for the diagnosis of various retinal diseases. Because of the ease of use of newer camera models and their relatively low cost, these cameras can be employed by operators with limited training for telemedicine or point-of-care (PoC) applications. We propose a novel technique that uses uncalibrated multiple-view fundus images to analyze the swelling of the macula. This innovation enables the detection and quantitative measurement of swollen areas by remote ophthalmologists. This capability is not available with a single image and prone to error with stereo fundus cameras. We also present automatic alg…

Automatic detection of cardiac contours on MR Images using fuzzy logic and dynamic programming

1997

International audience; Abstract: This paper deals with the use of fuzzy logic and dynamic programming in the detection of cardiac contours in MR Images. The definition of two parameters for each pixel allows the construction of the fuzzy set of the cardiac contour points. The first parameter takes into account the grey level, and the second the presence of an edge. A corresponding fuzzy matrix is derived from the initial image. Finally, a dynamic programming with graph searching is performed on this fuzzy matrix. The method has been tested on several MR images and the results of the contouring were validated by an expert in the domain. This preliminary work clearly demonstrates the interes…

Semi-automated and interactive segmentation of contrast-enhancing masses on breast DCE-MRI using spatial fuzzy clustering

2022

Abstract Multiparametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is the most sensitive imaging modality for breast cancer detection and is increasingly playing a key role in lesion characterization. In this context, accurate and reliable quantification of the shape and extent of breast cancer is crucial in clinical research environments. Since conventional lesion delineation procedures are still mostly manual, automated segmentation approaches can improve this time-consuming and operator-dependent task by annotating the regions of interest in a reproducible manner. In this work, a semi-automated and interactive approach based on the spatial Fuzzy C-Means (sFCM) algorithm is proposed, used to segme…

Comparison of the Enhancement Pattern of Hepatic Hemangioma on Magnetic Resonance Imaging Performed With Gd-EOB-DTPA Versus Gd-BOPTA

2019

Abstract Purpose To compare magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings with gadoxetic acid and gadobenate dimeglumine for the diagnosis of hepatic hemangiomas. Materials and Methods In this retrospective study, we included 26 hemangiomas (mean size was 14 mm ± 10 mm) in 19 patients (mean age 60 ± 14 years) scanned with both gadobenate dimeglumine MRI and gadoxetic acid MRI. For each patient, we collected multiple lesion variables including location, number, size and enhancement pattern on arterial, portal venous, 3-minute and hepatobiliary phases with both gadoxetic acid and gadobenate dimeglumine. The enhancement pattern with the two contrast agents was then compared. Results The typical en…

Hepatobiliary phase hypointensity predicts progression to hepatocellular carcinoma for intermediate-high risk observations, but not time to progressi…

2020

Purpose: To determine whether hepatobiliary phase hypointensity, enhancing “capsule” and size provide prognostic information regarding the risk of progression to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), as well as the time to progression, of intermediate to high risk observations ≥ 10 mm with arterial phase hyperenhancement (APHE). Method: This retrospective dual-institution study included 160 LR-3 and 26 LR-4 observations measuring more than 10 mm and having APHE in 136 patients (mean age [SD], 57 [11] years old). A composite reference standard of pathologic analysis and imaging follow-up was used. The prognostic performance of hepatobiliary phase hypointensity, enhancing “capsule” and size (cut-of…

Utility of Cardiac Magnetic Resonance to assess association between admission hyperglycemia and myocardial damage in patients with reperfused ST-segm…

2008

Abstract Aims to investigate the association between admission hyperglycemia and myocardial damage in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) using Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR). Methods We analyzed 113 patients with STEMI treated with successful primary percutaneous coronary intervention. Admission hyperglycemia was defined as a glucose level ≥ 7.8 mmol/l. Contrast-enhanced CMR was performed between 3 and 7 days after reperfusion to evaluate left ventricular function and perfusion data after injection of gadolinium-DTPA. First-pass images (FP), providing assessment of microvascular obstruction and Late Gadolinium Enhanced images (DE), reflecting the extent of in…
