Palaeontological Virtual Congress: A new way to make science

2019

On the first month of 2018, one of the authors (VDC) of this preface had an interesting idea: to hold a virtual congress. At first, he did not know of the existence of this kind of congress, but a quick internet search showed him that there were some examples in the fields of medicine and veterinary medicine; however, it had never been done in palaeontology. For that reason, with the help of other co-workers from the Universitat de València, Museo Paleontológico de Alpuente and Museu Valencià d’Historia Natural, we decided to undertake this adventure.

The Eucharistic Congress in the Town of Wieluń in 1931

2022

Mimo trudnej sytuacji gospodarczej mieszkańców powiatu wieluńskiego w II Rzeczypospolitej i związanej z nią konieczności emigrowania głównie do Niemiec w celach zarobkowych charakteryzowali się oni głęboką religijnością. Wielokrotnie bp Teodor Kubina podkreślał to w swoich wypowiedziach.

To act or not to act : Debating the climate change agenda in the United States Congress

2020

Most climate change actions take place in the international context in terms of multilateral negotiations and accords or in bilateral agreements between heads of the state. Parliaments or legislatures such as the United States Congress are in a crucial position when it comes to converting agreements or aims to action in domestic politics. The United States has played a volatile role in international negotiations on climate change. From categorically rejecting the Kyoto protocol during the George W. Bush administration, President Barack Obama announced that the United States would join the Paris Climate Accord prior to President Donald J. Trump's announcement of the withdrawal of the United …

Dialects: Early European Studies

2006

The article begins with an overview of dialectology starting with dictionaries and grammars in Switzerland (forerunners) and in Bavaria (1821, 1827–1837). The tradition of dialect atlases beganworldwide with the data collection for the German linguistic atlas (1877–1888) by Georg Wenker. Research on Germanic dialects other than German began between 1841 and 1860 in Denmark, Norway, and Great Britain (also with dictionaries and grammars). It goes on to show that after French and Italian dialectology had concentrated on written dialect collections, several dialect grammars, e.g., for Paris and surrounding areas, appeared as from 1872, culminating in the enormous French dialect atlas ALF betwe…

The treatment of severe self-injurious behavior through sensory stimulation: A case report

2016

Self-injurious behavior of an institutionalized man with profound intellectual disability was treated with a daily 15-min sensory stimulation program, which consisted of moving the arms and hands of the participant, swinging his body, and massage. The frequency of self-injurious behavior was measured in 10-min sessions. Using a reversal design, it was shown that sensory stimulation decreased the participant’s self-hitting behavior significantly, both in intensity and in frequency. Sensory stimulation is recommended for use in those cases in which functional analysis has shown that self-injury may be reinforced by its sensory consequences.

The cutting edge of spondylarthropathy research in the millennium

2002

In the last few years, with advances in technology and concept, research on the spondylarthropathies (SpA) has moved from random harvesting of piecemeal data to systematic evaluations of core puzzles. In the Second International Congress of Spondylarthropathies, held in Ghent, Belgium, on October 4–7, 2000, the most recent data were presented and these core puzzles were defined. The factors that are unique to SpA are 1) the site of inflammation is not only the synovium, but also the enthesis; 2) the essential predisposing gene is HLA– B27; 3) a number of other genes are required for development of ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a prototype of SpA; and 4) certain facultative intracellular Gram…
