Algorithmic modeling and prototyping of a structural joint for freeform surfaces
2016
This paper describes a parametric approach in architectural design through the elaboration of a process for generating non-standard structural joints particularly suitable for the arrangement of freeform surfaces in which maximum adaptability of the system is required to join a different number of members converging in a node from generic directions. The algorithmic definitions, developed using the graphical editor Grasshopper integrated with Rhinoceros, allow the management of an integrated workflow from the conceptual design of freeform surface to the prototyping of a structural joint with 3D printing techniques.
Core and Shell: facciate storiche e nuovi edifici. Il caso dell’ex Chelsea and Fulham Power Station a Londra
2022
The maintenance of the façade(s) is one of the most common solutions – in countries where this intervention is allowed – which can also guarantee the “preservation” of the existing built herit- age, as well as the construction of new “zero land consumption buildings”. The English term used to identify this area of work is Façadism. The paper analyses a perfect example attributable to this area of work that is being implement- ed on the former Chelsea and Fulham Power Station in London. The refurbishment project, in the construction phase, was instructed to Midgard Design Service Ltd (Design Department of the Irish construction company JRL Group Limited) which will transform the entire area …
Connection between Design and Nature Reflections and Projects for the future of the Planet
2022
Humanity’s delayed reaction to the consequences of the climate crisis is the result of multiple interests and strategies caused by denialist policies and piloted information. It is also true, however, that there is a strictly cultural responsibility, in the form of a lack of dialogue between sources of knowledge. Restoring the balance between humanity and nature is the most important issue that contemporary design must address. Design has the task of highlighting objects and strategies in re-establishing the relationship between Man and the context in which he lives by re-integrating the social and natural ecosystems. In this context, thanks to the evolution of natural sciences and technolo…
IL CRITERIO DELLA “SUFFICIENTLY CLOSE CONNECTION” ED IL SUO RAPPORTO CON IL PRINCIPIO DEL NE BIS IN IDEM SANZIONATORIO NELLA GIURISPRUDENZA DELLA COR…
2018
Generalized coherence and connection property of imprecise conditional previsions.
2008
In this paper we consider imprecise conditional prevision assessments on random quantities with finite set of possible values. We use a notion of generalized coherence which is based on the coherence principle of de Finetti. We consider the checking of g-coherence, by extending some previous results obtained for imprecise conditional probability assessments. Then, we study a connection property of interval-valued gcoherent prevision assessments, by extending a result given in a previous paper for precise assessments.
A Configuration of 3-phase Traction Inverter Employing {SiC} Devices
2022
In the scenario of a more and more sustainable society, an increasing electrification in different fields, such as mobility and industrial applications, is foreseen in the next decades. As far as power electronics is concerned, a challenging perspective is represented by achieving higher and higher switching frequencies while maintaining high voltage and low power losses. To do that, emerging semiconductor technologies are supposed to be increasingly employed, as well as innovative topologies of connections among switching devices. Among them, the cascode configuration can notably contribute to achieve high levels of dV/dt without losing efficiency. In this paper, a 3-phase Pulse Width Modu…
New Energy Corridors in the Euro-Mediterranean Area: The Pivotal Role of Sicily
2018
The present paper deals with the new opportunities deriving from the interconnections of the European and North African transmission systems. In order to achieve a single international market for electricity exchanges, interconnections between networks in different countries are becoming increasingly important and Sicily, for its geographical position in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, will undoubtedly play an important role as an electrical bridge between Europe and the North Africa in the near future. The paper, presenting the actual electro-energetic context of Tunisia, reports the new important interconnection already realized in South Italy (in particular in Sicily) and describe t…
The Institutionalization of Political Risk Assessment by Chinese Multinational Firms
2021
Some researchers have claimed that Chinese firms are impervious to political risk, calling into question the institutionalization of political risk by Chinese firms. Building on resource dependence theory and the literature on non-market strategies, this study finds significant impact by ownership structure, firm scale, and the degree of internationalization on the institutionalization of political risk assessments (IPRA) by Chinese firms. As such, state-owned firms and larger firms cultivate a higher level of IPRA. We find a positive impact of a firm’s scale and scope of internationalization, but insignificant impact of depth of internationalization.
On critical properties of the Berry curvature in the Kitaev honeycomb model
2019
We analyse the Kitaev honeycomb model, by means of the Berry curvature with respect to Hamiltonian parameters. We concentrate on the ground-state vortex-free sector, which allows us to exploit an appropriate Fermionisation technique. The parameter space includes a time-reversal breaking term which provides an analytical headway to study the curvature in phases in which it would otherwise vanish. The curvature is then analysed in the limit in which the time-reversal-symmetry-breaking perturbation vanishes. This provides remarkable information about the topological phase transitions of the model. The Berry curvature in itself exhibits no singularities at criticality, nevertheless it distingui…
FEM analysis of push-out test response of Hybrid Steel Trussed Concrete Beams (HSTCBs)
2015
Abstract Aiming to investigate the steel truss–concrete stress transfer mechanism in Hybrid Steel Trussed–Concrete Beams (HSTCBs), a three-dimensional (3D) nonlinear Finite Element (FE) model is developed. The constitutive relationship of the steel composing the plates and the rebars is modeled by means of a quadri-linear law, while the concrete behavior is defined by means of a Concrete Damaged Plasticity (CDP) model, suitable for modeling concrete and brittle materials. Two main failure mechanisms are considered, namely the tensile cracking and the compressive crushing. In order to accurately grasp the complicate dowel and bond phenomena arising at the steel–concrete interface, a 3D solid…
