The Pedagogical Solution: Freire’s Critical Pedagogy and Social Democracy

2016

‘A critical [educational] process is driven and justified by mutuality. This ethic of mutual development’, argued Ira Shor (2009) in the context of his analysis of Freire’s dialogic pedagogy, ‘can be thought as of a Freirean addition to the Vygotskyan one’ (p. 291). As this quote suggests, the aim of this chapter is to describe the essential feature of Paulo Freire’s solution to the conundrum that Lev Vygotsky’s framework stumbled upon. While Shor’s sentence hits the target, it relies on a widespread opinion among education scholars, who tend to emphasize the ethical component of critical pedagogy in general and Freire’s project in particular (Darder, 2009; Flores-Kastaris et al., 2009). Identity, nation‐state and football in Spain. the evolution of nationalist feelings in Spanish Football

2007

This essay shows the importance of the identity component in the development of Spanish football from its birth at the beginning of the twentieth century, when football was organized at a regional level, until the present time when football reflects the democratic and post‐national Spain created after the arrival of democracy in the last quarter of the twentieth century. The essay expounds the existence of four periods in the development of the nationalistic feelings with which Spanish football has been embodied: the pre‐national or regional period, the period of Spanish nationalization, the period of strengthening of peripheral nationalisms and the post‐national period. In order to explain…

Geopolítica, (de)colonialidad e identidad: la conciencia dividida de Rubén Darío / Geopolitics, (De)coloniality and Identity: the Divided Consciousne…

2017

2014

Summary. Early childhood education programs represent a valuable early learning opportunity for promoting the socioemotional skills. The aims of the study were to validate the socioemotional skills observation scale, to compare 3-4 year-old children’s socioemotional competencies in general kindergarten settings and in a PE session, separately by gender, and to compare 3-4 year-old children’s socioemotional competencies in general kindergarten settings and at home. The participants were 59 children (23 girls, 36 boys) from six communal kindergartens in Finland, their parents, and early educators. The data were analyzed using the confirmatory factor analysis and t-tests. The results showed th…

Lipids and biopackaging

1997

Packaging is important to preserve food quality. It is a barrier to water vapor, gas, aroma, and solute migration between the food and the environment. With the recent increase in ecological consciousness, research has turned toward finding biodegradable materials. The different kinds of biopackaging are discussed with special focus on edible films. The aim of this review is to focus on the influence of lipids used in edible films, mainly for their efficiency as water-vapor barriers. The structure, degree of saturation, chainlength, physical state, shape and dimension of crystals, and distribution of lipids into the film influence the functional properties of the film. In general, the perfo…

Comprehensive Overview on Multiple Strategies Fighting COVID-19

2020

Lately, myriad of novel viruses have emerged causing epidemics such as SARS, MERS, and SARS-CoV-2, leading to high mortality rates worldwide. Thus, these viruses represented a challenging threat to mankind, especially considering the miniscule data available at our disposal regarding these novel viruses. The entire world established coordinative relations in research projects regarding drug and vaccine development on the external range, whereas on the internal range, all countries declared it an emergency case through imposing different restrictions related to their border control, large gatherings, school attendance, and most social activities. Pandemic combating plans prioritized all sect…

SEAI: Social Emotional Artificial Intelligence Based on Damasio’s Theory of Mind

2018

A socially intelligent robot must be capable to extract meaningful information in real-time from the social environment and react accordingly with coherent human-like behaviour. Moreover, it should be able to internalise this information, to reason on it at a higher abstract level, build its own opinions independently and then automatically bias the decision-making according to its unique experience. In the last decades, neuroscience research highlighted the link between the evolution of such complex behaviour and the evolution of a certain level of consciousness, which cannot leave out of a body that feels emotions as discriminants and prompters. In order to develop cognitive systems for s…

How Can the Protoconsciousness Hypothesis Contribute to Philosophical Theories of Consciousness and the Self?

2014

In his William James lectures on Dream Consciousness, Allan Hobson provides a rich and multi-faceted introduction to state-of-the-art findings from sleep and dream research, as well as an overview of his own wide-ranging contributions to this field. It is no exaggeration to say that his work has shaped contemporary theories of sleep and dreaming like no other. But he has done even more: by showing how his work on dreaming fits into broader theories of consciousness (Hobson et al. 2000) and psychotic wake states (Hobson 1999), he has repeatedly emphasized its implications for the theoretical understanding of consciousness itself. His long-standing willingness to connect the fields of sleep a…

What determines a positive attitude towards natural food products? An expectancy theory approach.

2021

Natural food products are becoming increasingly popular worldwide due to their health and environmental benefits. However, these products' increasing anecdotal popularity has not translated into their widespread adoption; in fact, demand for natural food products remains confined to a relatively small segment of consumers. Despite this, little is known about the facilitators and inhibitors of favourable attitude of consumers towards these products. Recognising this gap, our study employed the theoretical lens of expectancy theory to investigate these factors. Through an extensive review of the pro-environmental consumption literature, we identified four facilitating and inhibiting factors: …
