Herbert J. Davenport on Conspicuous Consumption and the Economics of Feminism

This article analyzes Herbert J. Davenport’s discussions of conspicuous consumption and feminism. Even though these (typically) Veblenian topics represent two “episodes” in many respects disconnected with the central body of Davenport’s theoretical interests, the assessment of Davenport’s views on these matters enlarges our knowledge of the development of his thought. Our analysis shows how Davenport can be enrolled among the forerunners of the modern theory of positional goods. Moreover, our article offers some new findings on the impact of Veblen’s ideas on one of his closest students at the Chicago University.

In this paper we study the impact of the fiscal policy on the economic growth for European Union, for the period 2000-2009. This subject represents a very debated problem in the economic literature. Our findings shows that, from the analysis of correlation between economic growth rate and total rate of taxation, there is generally an inverse relationship, meaning that an increase in the tax rate adversely affects economic growth. Chemical Characteristics and Viability of Starter Cultures of Freeze–Dried Sweet Potato Extract–Supplemented Synbiotic Yogurt

The research aimed to determine the sucrose concentration as a cryoprotectant to obtain the chemical properties and the viability of Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) and Lactobasillus plantarum in the synbiotic yogurt. It adopted a one–factor Completely Randomized Design (CRD) by including sucrose in concentrations from 0 %, 2.5 %, 5 % to 7.5 %, three replications. As the sharing economy has become more popular, its problems are discussed increasingly. However, these discussions are often confusing because there are multiple definitions for the sharing economy, and the discourse does not usually specify which definition it is based on. This article focuses on the concept of the citizen-consumer to examine the role of consumption as a tool for environmental sustainability. An ethical view of both citizenship and consumption is introduced to assess the potential of the citizen-consumer as an agent for socio-environmental change. To this end, the notions of ecological citizenship and sustainable consumption are used as a framework for analysis. Ecological citizenship is described as an ethical account of citizenship aimed at changing behaviours and attitudes, and spreading environmental values.
