Digital Content Consumption : A Finnish-Austrian Cross-Country Analysis

2019

Online content consumption behavior has significantly changed. In particular, the growing success of legal media service providers such as Youtube, Netflix, or Spotify, has led to new modes of consumption. Research, however, still focuses predominately on illegal streaming and downloading behavior and its impact on media companies' commercial success. In order to paint a more comprehensive picture, we report on a cross-country study conducted in Austria and Finland, which explored digital content consumption habits and sources, young adults' attitudes towards illegal sources, and the importance of price, legality, ease of use as well as ease of access, and its influence on people's consumpt…

The Role of Social Media in the Creation of Young People’s Consumer Identities

2023

This article explores how young people construct and express their consumer identities via their consumption styles on social media. The importance of commercial content on social media, such as the postings of social media influencers and advertisers, has been increasing during the past years. Framed by theories on social identity, social comparison and consumer socialization, we analysed focus group discussions with 15 to 19-year-old teenagers in Finland ( N = 35). The results reveal that the participants had a clear understanding of their consumer identities: what kind of consumers they were and what they did not want to be. The consumption styles: luxury brand-oriented, trendy second-h…

Źródła finansowania wydatków konsumpcyjnych studentów opolskiego ośrodka akademickiego

2016

Prezentowany materiał stanowi efekt kilkuletnich badań empirycznych, które wykonano we wszystkich uczelniach wyższych prowadzących działalność edukacyjną w Opolu, mającym status regionalnego ośrodka akademickiego. Próba do badań została ustalona w sposób kwotowy, zaś same badania przeprowadzono na dobranej próbie 1075 osób, będących w czasie badań studentami opolskich uczelni wyższych.

2017

Monitoring Training and Recovery during a Period of Increased Intensity or Volume in Recreational Endurance Athletes

2021

The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of progressively increased training intensity or volume on the nocturnal heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV), countermovement jump, perceived recovery, and heart rate-running speed index (HR-RS index). Another aim was to analyze how observed patterns during the training period in these monitoring variables were associated with the changes in endurance performance. Thirty recreationally trained participants performed a 10-week control period of regular training and a 10-week training period of either increased training intensity (INT, n = 13) or volume (VOL, n = 17). Changes in endurance performance were assessed by an incremen…

Greening a university campus: trends of energy consumption and possible sustainable paths

2014

Recent years have seen an increasing public interest in issues related to energy saving and environmental pollution reduction of public buildings, such as those in university campuses, that should set an example of sustainable development. University campuses are usually characterized by the daily presence of a high number of people working and living in a relatively limited area. They are sites of a wide spread of functions, ranging from teaching to laboratory activities, from housing and food preparation to local transportation. All these activities require remarkable amount of energy that, actually, are not always utilized with the best possible efficiency. This calls for a deep reconsid…

Lavatanssiko liikuntaa?

2012

Lavatanssi on kasvattanut suosiotaan viime vuosikymmeninä. Tutkimukseen osallistui 58 vapaaehtoisesti ilmoittautunutta tanssinharrastajaa. Kolmen tunnin lavatanssi-illan aikana tutkittavien keskisyke oli 116 ± 16 bpm, korkein syke 160 ± 15 bpm, ja energiankulutus miehillä 2043 ± 5…

Multicriteria evaluation of alternatives for remote monitoring systems of municipal buildings

2014

Abstract Conservation of natural resources drives municipalities to monitor their heat, power and water consumption more accurately. The objective of this study was to evaluate different implementation possibilities for remote monitoring systems for the municipal buildings of two medium-sized municipalities, Hollola and Nastola in Southern Finland. Four different alternatives were considered: (1) a system by an external service provider, (2) a system provided by the local energy distribution company, (3) a system built by the municipalities themselves, and (4) using the current manual system but with more frequent data collection. The alternatives were evaluated in terms of multiple functio…

Gill area explains deviations from body size–metabolic rate relationship in teleost fishes

2022

Whether gill area constrains fish metabolism through oxygen limitation is a debated topic. Here, the authors provide insights into this question by analysing mass-specific metabolic rates across 44 teleost fishes extracted from FishBase. They explore whether species deviations from metabolic rates predicted by body mass can be explained by species gill area. They show that the gill area explains c. 26%–28% of species-level deviations from mass-specific metabolic rates. Their findings suggest that gill area might indeed be one of the factors limiting metabolic rate in fishes.
