A Spatial Multilevel Analysis of Italian SMEs Productivity

2009

Abstract In this paper, we adapt multilevel analysis methods to investigate the spatial variability of SMEs' productivity across the Italian territory, and account for differences in the socio-economic context. Our results suggest that to properly capture the variability of the data, it is important to allow for both spatial mean and slope effects. Social decay has the expected negative impact. However, while this effect is larger on firms with smaller capital intensity, firms with higher capital intensity seem to be less affected by geography. Greater territorial heterogeneity emerges among those firms with lower capital to labour ratios. Une analyse spatiale a plusieurs niveaux de la prod…

A uniform quantificational logic for algebraic notions ofcontext

2002

A quantificational framework of formal reasoning is proposed, which emphasises the pattern of entering and exiting context. Contexts are modelled by an algebraic structure which reflects the order and manner in which context is entered into and exited from. The equations of the algebra partitions context terms into equivalence classes. A formal semantics is defined, containing models that map equivalence classes of certain context terms to sets of first order structures. The corresponding Hilbert system incorporates the algebraic equations as axioms asserted in context. In this way a uniform logic for arbitrary algebras of context is obtained. Soundness and completeness are proved. In semig…

Per una buona psicoanalisi dell’arte: Vygostskij e il Mosè di Freud

2012

The aim of this article is to show that Vygotskijan and Freudian positions on the psychological analysis of art move from a similar conception of art and of human mind. To demonstrate our thesis we have substantially used two works: Vygostkij’s Psychology of art and Freud’s Moses of Michelangelo. We consider that, in spite of the critic that Vygostkij makes against the psychoanalytic approach to the products of art, probably for historic reasons, the importance that he gives to the notion of form, of social context and of conscious factors in artistic creations is the same that Freud gives in his applied psychoanalysis, and this is clear in the essay on Moses. In particular, if we concentra…

Mapping Seasonal Variability of Buildings Electricity Demand profiles in Mediterranean Small Islands

2023

In communities with a high tourist influx and warm climate, such as Mediterranean small islands, the energy demands for space cooling and domestic hot water are expected to significantly increase during summer. Considering the current energy context, for succeeding energy transition and reducing the dependency on not endogenous fossil fuels, it is paramount to increase the deployment of renewable sources of energy, especially wind and solar which, however, are aleatory and unpredictable. Hence, to reduce the high costs for energy supply in these contexts, the analysis of the variation of energy consumption is fundamental. Moreover, mapping the spatial distribution of energy profiles can be …

The sunset of Gortyn: amphorae in 7th –8th centuries AD

2014

Gortyn (A. Di Vita [ed.] 2000-01), some new contexts, more delimited and reliable, allow us to define better circulation, developments, and local use of amphorae in the last periods of urban life of the Cretan city. Two contexts of the mid-late 7th and late 7th-8th centuries are briefly analysed, coming from different quarters of the town (the Old Agora and the Early Byzantine houses near the “Praetorium”), and resulting from different formative processes, which could represent the circulation trends just before, and in the re-occupation phase after the earthquake that dismembered the Late Roman urban layout at the end of the 7th/early 8th century. They display a variety of imports from tra…

Cultural environments and the appointment of females directors on boards: An analysis from a global perspective

2020

This is the pre-peer reviewed version of the following article: Cultural environments and the appointment of female directors on boards: An analysis from a global perspective, which has been published in final form at https://doi.org/10.1002/csr.2065. This article may be used for non-commercial purposes in accordance with Wiley Terms and Conditions for Use of Self-Archived Versions. Hofstede's six cultural dimensions (power distance, individualism, masculinity, uncertainty avoidance, long‐term orientation and indulgence) has received little attention concerning the presence of female directors on boards. Moreover, past research has only focussed on four or five of these six cultural dimensi…

Incremental-Entity Personal Conceptions of Intelligence and Individualism-Collectivism in Italian Students

2015

This article examines the relationship between Incremental-Entity personal conceptions of intelligence and the cultural dimension of Individualism-Collectivism in Italian students attending high school. Four types of individualism and collectivism were investigated: 1) Vertical-Individualism, characterized by independent and different self; 2) Horizontal-Individualism, characterized by independent and similar self; 3) Vertical-Collectivism, characterized by interdependent and different self; and 4) Horizontal-Collectivism, characterized by interdependent and similar self. The sample includes 250 students,3th and 5th graders. A battery of tests including a Sociodemographic Questionnaire, the…

Cultural transposition: Italian didactic experiences inspired by Chinese and Russian perspectives on whole number arithmetic

2019

The paper presents some reflections and activities developed by researchers and teachers involved in teacher education programs on cultural transposition. The construct of cultural transposition is presented as a condition for decentralizing the didactic practice of a specific cultural context through contact with other didactic practices of different cultural contexts. We discuss the background theoretical issues of this approach and also give an analysis of two examples of cultural transposition experiences carried out in Italy. In particular, by means of qualitative analysis of some excerpts, discussions, and interviews, we show that the contact with different perspectives coming from Ch…

Environmental Features Associated With Older Adults' Physical Activity in Different Types of Urban Neighborhoods.

2020

The authors studied associations of nature- and infrastructure-based features with physical activity (PA) in different urban neighborhood types; 848 community-dwelling people aged 75–90 years reported PA and three perceived nature-based destinations and seven infrastructure-based features as outdoor mobility facilitators. Neighborhood type was defined using a geographic information system based on proximity to central service areas and residential density (city center, subcenter, and dense and dispersed areas outside centers). PA was higher in dense areas and the city center. Binary logistic regression showed that perceiving nature-based destinations increased the odds for higher PA in the …
