Self-blood pressure monitoring as a tool to increase hypertension awareness, adherence to antihypertensive therapy, and blood pressure control

2019

For many years, casual blood pressure (BP) taken by a sphygmomanometer in the clinic or at the physician's office has been used as the standard method for diagnosing hypertension. Even if such measurement has been the cornerstone on which our understanding of the consequences of hypertension is based, there is a huge and very consistent body of evidence indicating that casual measurements of BP may provide a very unreliable index for the evaluation of hypertension because of their variability. The two alternative ways of measuring BP that have been most commonly used are measurements made at home by the patient himself (home or self‐BP monitoring—SBPM) and measurements by ambulatory blood p…

The Effects of Alveolar Ridge Preservation: A Meta-Analysis

2015

Purpose The aim of this article was to analyze the horizontal, vertical, and histological effects of alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) versus the ones of unassisted socket healing, in the format of an up-to-date review and meta-analysis. Materials and Methods An extensive electronic search in the electronic databases of the National Library of Medicine was conducted for articles published up to June 2014 to identify literature presenting data on the topic of ARP. Only randomized controlled trials, controlled clinical trials, and prospective trials were included for meta-analysis. Results After screening 903 abstracts from the electronic database, we included 64 studies in qualitative and 18…

Boosting Design Space Explorations with Existing or Automatically Learned Knowledge

2012

During development, processor architectures can be tuned and configured by many different parameters. For benchmarking, automatic design space explorations (DSEs) with heuristic algorithms are a helpful approach to find the best settings for these parameters according to multiple objectives, e.g. performance, energy consumption, or real-time constraints. But if the setup is slightly changed and a new DSE has to be performed, it will start from scratch, resulting in very long evaluation times. To reduce the evaluation times we extend the NSGA-II algorithm in this article, such that automatic DSEs can be supported with a set of transformation rules defined in a highly readable format, the fuz…

The COGNITION Study Rationale and Design: Influence of Closed Loop Stimulation on Cognitive Performance in Pacemaker Patients

2008

Background: Several studies showed the beneficial effect of pacemaker implantation on cognitive performance in patients with bradycardia. But it has never been investigated if patients with chronotropic incompetence may improve their cognitive performance if treated by a rate-adaptive system reacting to mental stress in comparison to the most frequently used accelerometer-driven pacing. Methods: The randomized, single-blind, multicenter COGNITION study evaluates if closed loop stimulation (CLS) offers incremental benefit in the speed of cognitive performance and the overall well-being of elderly patients with bradycardia compared with accelerometer-based pacing. Four hundred chronotropicall…

Incidence and clinical importance of perioperative histamine release: randomised study of volume loading and antihistamines after induction of anaest…

1994

Although histamine release is recognised as a common event during anaesthesia and surgery, few clinicians judge the resultant cardiorespiratory disturbances serious enough to warrant prophylaxis with antihistamines. We have assessed the incidence and importance of histamine release in a randomised 2 x 2 factorial study. 240 patients representing a routine throughput of major general surgery were studied during a standardised induction of anaesthesia and preoperative loading of the circulation with either Ringer solution or Haemaccel-35, with or without antihistamine prophylaxis with dimetindene (H1) plus cimetidine (H2). Cardiorespiratory disturbances were graded as detectable, clinically r…

Determination of Brain Death/Death by Neurologic Criteria

2020

Importance: There are inconsistencies in concept, criteria, practice, and documentation of brain death/death by neurologic criteria (BD/DNC) both internationally and within countries. Objective: To formulate a consensus statement of recommendations on determination of BD/DNC based on review of the literature and expert opinion of a large multidisciplinary, international panel. Process: Relevant international professional societies were recruited to develop recommendations regarding determination of BD/DNC. Literature searches of the Cochrane, Embase, and MEDLINE databases included January 1, 1992, through April 2020 identified pertinent articles for review. Because of the lack of high-quali…

Impaired cognitive control in patients with brain tumors

2021

Though the assessment of cognitive functions is proven to be a reliable prognostic indicator in patients with brain tumors, some of these functions, such as cognitive control, are still rarely investigated. The objective of this study was to examine proactive and reactive control functions in patients with focal brain tumors and to identify lesioned brain areas more at "risk" for developing impairment of these functions. To this end, a group of twenty-two patients, candidate to surgery, were tested with an AX-CPT task and a Stroop task, along with a clinical neuropsychological assessment, and their performance was compared to that of a well-matched healthy control group. Although overall ac…
