Convergence Analysis of Distributed Set-Valued Information Systems

2016

This paper focuses on the convergence of information in distributed systems of agents communicating over a network. The information on which the convergence is sought is not rep- resented by real numbers, as often in the literature, rather by sets. The dynamics of the evolution of information across the net- work is accordingly described by set-valued iterative maps. While the study of convergence of set-valued iterative maps is highly complex in general, this paper focuses on Boolean maps, which are comprised of arbitrary combinations of unions, intersections, and complements of sets. For these important class of systems, we provide tools to study both global and local convergence. A distr…

Pathogenicity and possible biological control of fungi associated to Botryosphaeria dieback of grapevine in Western Sicily

2018

Botryosphaeria dieback is a widespread grapevine trunk disease caused by species of fungi within the family Botryosphaeriaceae. Symptoms of the disease include bud necrosis, leaf chlorosis, vascular discoloration of the wood, cankers and dieback. In 2013 typical symptoms of Botryosphaeria dieback was observed in Western Sicily and four species associated with the syndrome were isolated and identified as Diplodia seriata, Lasiodiplodia mediterranea, Neofusicoccum parvum and Neofusicoccum vitifusiforme. In order to fulfill Koch’s postulates, pathogenicity tests of eighteen isolates were performed on two-year grapevine cuttings of cv. Inzolia. Six months after inoculation all the Botryosphaeri…

Tailoring Third-Harmonic Diffraction Efficiency by Hybrid Modes in High-Q Metasurfaces

2021

Metasurfaces are versatile tools for manipulating light; however, they have received little attention as devices for the efficient control of nonlinearly diffracted light. Here, we demonstrate nonlinear wavefront control through third-harmonic generation (THG) beaming into diffraction orders with efficiency tuned by excitation of hybrid Mie-quasi-bound states in the continuum (BIC) modes in a silicon metasurface. Simultaneous excitation of the high-Q collective Mie-type modes and quasi-BIC modes leads to their hybridization and results in a local electric field redistribution. We probe the hybrid mode by measuring far-field patterns of THG and observe the strong switching between (0,-1) and…

The EasyTube during general anesthesia for minor surgery

2017

BACKGROUND The EasyTube (EzT) is a supraglottic airway device that is used for emergency airway situations. Ventilation during general anesthesia should also be feasible, but literature on the EzT is scarce. We evaluated the EzT in comparison with the endotracheal tube (ETT) in its use during general anesthesia in a comparative study. METHODS A total of 400 patients with American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status I to II scheduled for minor surgery in 4 centers were randomized for ventilation via the ETT or EzT. RESULTS In all patients, the EzT and the ETT could be inserted within 3 attempts. In all EzT patients, the inspiratory and expiratory minute volumes (6.64 ± 0.71 an…

Memory performances and personality traits in mothers of children with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome

2019

Background Chronic diseases in pediatric age have been identified as stressful risk factors for parents. Studies on caregivers have documented the impact of chronic parenting stress on emotion and cognition. Aim To investigate the differences between a group of mothers of children affected by obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) for at least 4 years and a group of mothers of typically developing children (TDC) in relation to parental stress, self-esteem, locus of control, and memory performances. Methods A group of 86 mothers (mean age 35.6±4.9, ranged between 32 and 41 years) of children with OSAS diagnosis, and a group of 52 mothers of TDC (mean age 35.9±4.2, ranged between 32 and 41 y…

Use of a new aneurysm clip with an inverted-spring mechanism to facilitate visual control during clip application. Technical note.

1995

✓ When operating on deep-seated cerebral aneurysms, the surgeon's visual control of clip application may be impaired by the clip holder unless adjacent structures are retracted. To improve visual control and reduce the necessity for retraction, the senior author (A.P.) developed a new concept: an aneurysm clip with an inverted-spring mechanism. The clip has two jaws that point away from the clip blades. The jaws of the clip holder articulate with the inner side of the clip jaws. By distending the jaws of the clip holder the blades of the clip are opened and vice versa. Thus the visual field increases while the clip application is proceeding. This instrumentation is useful, especially in cas…

Transitions from grid-connected to island operation of Smart Microgrids

2019

In this paper a control methodology is presented to perform a bumpless transition from the on-grid to the offgrid of a smart microgrid. The derived controller manages the internal production in order to get to zero the tie-line active and reactive power flows so that the opening of the tie line breaker does not produce significant perturbations. Experimental tests performed on the microgrid built at the Polytechnic University of Bari demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.
