Genetic and environmental sources of continuity and change in teacher-rated aggression during early adolescence

2006

Genetic and environmental sources of continuity and change in aggression were studied in a sample of 1,041 twin pairs (364 monozygotic; 348 same-sex dizygotic; and 329 opposite-sex dizygotic) as part of an ongoing, population-based Finnish twin-family study. At ages 12 and 14, the twins' aggression was assessed by their classroom teachers, using a rating form of the Multidimensional Peer Nomination Inventory. Genetic and environmental sources of continuity and change were studied by fitting a longitudinal bivariate Cholesky decomposition model. Longitudinal model-fitting results indicated that both genetic and environmental factors influenced continuity in aggression during this 2-year peri…

Scheduling a cellular manufacturing system with GA

2002

The flexible manufacturing cell scheduling problem is considered with a multi-objective approach, pursuing together makespan minimisation and the in process job wait minimisation. The formulation of the scheduling problem is discussed, analysing how to generate well suited sequences, like generalised permutation sequences, and the proper construction of a JIT timing of activities. An evolutionary sequencing algorithm based on both classic genetic operators and hybrid operators is then proposed. The hybrid operators have been introduced to construct highly fit initial population, to perform periodically a local search on the population and to maintain enough genetical diversity in the actual…

Memetic Compact Differential Evolution for Cartesian Robot Control

2010

This article deals with optimization problems to be solved in the absence of a full power computer device. The goal is to solve a complex optimization problem by using a control card related to portable devices, e.g. for the control of commercial robots. In order to handle this class of optimization problems, a novel Memetic Computing approach is presented. The proposed algorithm employs a Differential Evolution framework which instead of processing an actual population of candidate solutions, makes use of a statistical representation of the population which evolves over time. In addition, the framework uses a stochastic local search algorithm which attempts to enhance the performance of th…

Opinion dynamics and stubbornness through mean-field games

2013

This paper provides a mean field game theoretic interpretation of opinion dynamics and stubbornness. The model describes a crowd-seeking homogeneous population of agents, under the influence of one stubborn agent. The game takes on the form of two partial differential equations, the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation and the Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck equation for the individual optimal response and the population evolution, respectively. For the game of interest, we establish a mean field equilibrium where all agents reach epsilon-consensus in a neighborhood of the stubborn agent's opinion.

Validation of the Multidimensional Driving Style Inventory (MDSI) in professional drivers: How does it work in transportation workers?

2019

Abstract The Multidimensional Driving Style Inventory or MDSI constitutes, perhaps, the most relevant tool for measuring driving styles. Since its releasing in 2004, it has been applied worldwide to different samples of drivers, showing an important value and utility for road safety. However, empirical studies using the MDSI on professional drivers are scarce and, to the date, there is no validated version of the instrument in this workforce yet. Objectives: This study had two aims. First, to describe in detail the validation of the Taubman-Ben-Ari’s MDSI among professional drivers and, second, to test its convergent validity with other key relevant factors present in the work environment o…

Randomized multicenter comparison of two coatings of intramobile cylinder implants in 313 partially edentulous mandibles followed up for 5 years

2002

Intramobile cylinder (IMZ) implants with either of two coatings, hydroxyapatite (HA) or titanium plasma-flame (TPF), as distal abutments for combined tooth implant-supported restorations, were compared in 313 partially edentulous mandibles with respect to postprosthetical failure patterns and complication frequencies in a randomized multicenter clinical trial. Within the treatment protocols, the two coatings do not show evidence of different efficacy with respect to occurrence of postprosthetical integration deficiency (ID) or functional deficiency (FD). Statistical equivalence for an absolute effect of +/-15% in event-free survival could only be demonstrated for FD, not for ID, however. In…

Call admission control scheme using borrowable guard channels and prioritizing fresh calls retrials in small cell networks

2014

International audience; Recent trends in mobile cellular networks turn towards deployment of Small Cell Networks (SCNs), where, the cell size gets smaller, and thus the number of subscribers served in a cell will be relatively smaller, such that traffic models with a finite source of subscribers should be considered. Smaller cells cause the mobile subscribers to cross several cells during an ongoing conversation resulting in frequent handovers. Most of works dealing with Call Admission Control (CAC) problems based on guard channels scheme in cellular mobile networks consider models without retrials (reapeted calls phenomenon). However, almost all existing works which take into account retri…

Large Networks of Dynamic Agents: Consensus under Adversarial Disturbances

2012

This paper studies interactions among homogeneous social groups within the framework of large population games. Each group is represented by a network and the behavior described by a two-player repeated game. The contribution is three-fold. Beyond the idea of providing a novel two-level model with repeated games at a lower level and population games at a higher level, we also establish a mean field equilibrium and study state feedback best-response strategies as well as worst-case adversarial disturbances in that context.

Variation in mortality among populations is higher for pymetrozine than for imidacloprid and spiromesifen inTrialeurodes vaporariorumin greenhouses i…

2014

BACKGROUND Insecticide resistance in Trialeurodes vaporariorum W. is unknown in the species' northern distribution range where it inhabits mainly commercial greenhouses. Resistance development in whiteflies feeding on year-round crops in greenhouses is possible owing to the use of chemical treatments to back up biocontrol. The authors tested the response levels to spiromesifen, pymetrozine and imidacloprid in whiteflies collected from seven greenhouses within a 35 km radius in western Finland. RESULTS All except one (PR) population had LC50 values below the recommended concentrations for the tested compounds. However, some populations showed reduced susceptibility to pymetrozine in comparis…

Novel COVID-19 Intersections with Dentistry: Approaches to protection

2021

Background: COVID-19 outbreak brought many challenges to the society and to health care systems Health care professionals in dental practices are a high-risk population, due to close contact to saliva and aerosols Specific guidance for those professionals is essential to control disease transmission and guarantee dentist's health Material and Methods: We performed a literature review based on online search in Pubmed, Scientific Electronic Library, Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciencias da Saude and Scopus databases Included articles were fully read and analysed regarding infection control measurements, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), conditions for procedures and us…
