Multisequential photofragmentation of size-selected gold cluster ions

Time-resolved fragmentation measurements have been performed on stored, size-selected gold cluster ions ${\mathrm{Au}}_{n}^{+}$ $(n=17--21)$ that have been excited up to 15 eV by multiphoton absorption. These excitation energies are far above the clusters' dissociation thresholds and initiate multistep sequential unimolecular dissociation by evaporation of neutral monomers. The measurements allow for the determination of a combination of kinetic-energy release and radiative cooling of the excited clusters. Adiabatic Cooling of Antiprotons

2011

Adiabatic cooling is shown to be a simple and effective method to cool many charged particles in a trap to very low temperatures. Up to 3 x 10(6) (p) over bar are cooled to 3.5 K-10(3) times more cold (p) over bar and a 3 times lower (p) over bar temperature than previously reported. A second cooling method cools (p) over bar plasmas via the synchrotron radiation of embedded (p) over bar (with many fewer (p) over bar than (p) over bar) in preparation for adiabatic cooling. No (p) over bar are lost during either process-a significant advantage for rare particles.

Fast timing and trigger Cherenkov detector for collider experiments

Analysis of fast timing and trigger Cherenkov detector's design for its use in collider experiments is presented. Several specific requirements are taken into account - necessity of the radiator's placement as close to the beam pipe as possible along with the requirement of gapless (solid) radiator's design. Characteristics of the Cherenkov detector's laboratory prototype obtained using a pion beam at the CERN Proton Synchrotron are also presented, showing the possibility of obtaining sufficiently high geometrical efficiency along with good enough time resolution (50 ps sigma).

HITRAP – a facility for experiments on heavy highly charged ions and on antiprotons

HITRAP is a facility for very slow highly-charged heavy ions at GSI. HITRAP uses the GSI relativistic ion beams, the Experimental Storage Ring ESR for electron cooling and deceleration to 4 MeV/u, and consists of a combination of an interdigital H-mode (IH) structure with a radiofrequency quadrupole structure for further deceleration to 6 keV/u, and a Penning trap for accumulation and cooling to low temperatures. Finally, ion beams with low emittance will be delivered to a large variety of atomic and nuclear physics experiments. Presently, HITRAP is in the commissioning phase. The polarized electron-nucleon collider project ENC at GSI/FAIR

The ENC project attempts to realize an electron-nucleon collider at the upcoming Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research FAIR at GSI Darmstadt by utilizing the antiproton high-energy storage ring HESR for polarized proton and deuteron beams. The addition of a 3.3 GeV storage ring for polarized electrons will enable electron-nucleon collisions up to a center-of-mass energy of - s - 14 GeV. In such a configuration peak luminosities in the range of L = 10(32) to 10(33)cm(-')(2)s(-')(1) are feasible . Laser cooling of stored relativistic ion beams with large momentum spreads using a laser system with a wide scanning range

New results on laser cooling of stored, bunched, relativistic ion beams are presented. For the first time it has been possible to cool an ion beam with large momentum spread without initial electron cooling or scanning of the bunching frequency by using a single cw laser system.

Computer simulation of models for the structural glass transition

In order to test theoretical concepts on the glass transition, we investigate several models of glassy materials by means of Monte Carlo (MC) and Molecular Dynamics (MD) computer simulations. It is shown that also simplified models exhibit a glass transition which is in qualitative agreement with experiment and that thus such models are useful to study this phenomenon. Measurement of the transverse Doppler shift using a stored relativistic7Li+ ion beam

We have performed for the first time precision spectroscopy on a coasting fast7Li+ ion beam in a storage ring. The ion beam moving with 6.4% speed of light was first electron cooled and then merged with two counterpropagating laser beams acting on two different hyperfine transitions sharing a common upper level (λ-system). One laser was frequency locked to thea 3 127J2 hfs frequency component established as a secondary frequency standard at 514 nm. The second laser was tuned over theλ-resonance, which was recorded relative to127J2 hfs components. New results with stored exotic nuclei at relativistic energies

Recently, much progress has been made with stored exotic nuclei at relativistic velocities ( v c = 0.7 ) . Fragments of 208Pb and 209Bi projectiles and fission products from 238U ions were produced, separated in flight with the fragment separator FRS, and injected into the storage-cooler ring ESR for precision measurements. 114 new masses of neutron-deficient isotopes in the lead region have been measured with time-resolved Schottky Mass Spectrometry (SMS). A new isospin dependence of the pairing energy was observed due to the improved mass accuracy of typically 1.5×10-7 (30 keV). The selection and performance of diamond radiators used in coherent bremsstrahlung experiments

The bremsstrahlung emitted as a result of scattering electrons in thin diamond crystals provides a useful source of high energy photons for use in photonuclear experiments, since the coherent bremsstrahlung produced is linearly polarized. Techniques for selecting the most favorable diamonds have been investigated. These are optical polaroid analysis, X-ray topography and rocking curve measurements.
