NEW DEC OPEN CYCLE FOR AIR CONDITIONING BASED ON FIXED COOLED ADSORPTION BEDS AND WET HEAT EXCHANGERS
2013
In this work, a new solar Desiccant Evaporative Cooling (DEC) concept is presented. In the proposed system, two fixed packed desiccant beds of silica gel, operating in a batch process, are used as an alternative solution to the common adsorption rotor for dehumidifying outside air. As well known, adsorption heat due to water condensation considerably reduces the dehumidification capacity of the desiccant material, causing inefficiencies in performance. The aim of the work is to overcome the mentioned intrinsic thermodynamic limit of the adsorption rotor technology. The proposed core component is a fin and tube heat exchanger, commonly used in several air conditioning applications, wherein t…
The Role of Natural Ventilative Cooling in NZE Temporary and Emergency Shelters Design: a Mediterranean Case Study
2016
The paper presents a case-study of a pre-fabricated housing module built in Messina (Sicily, Italy) and the assessment of its energy performances under the net zero energy perspective. The potential of ventilative natural cooling application in the case-study is also investigated. Some particular features of the building - the modularity, the prefabrication, the rapidity of assembly, the possibility of being built on disconnected soils and the absence of maintenance - identify an effective use as a temporary housing solution for e.g. workers in proximity of an isolated working place or in emergency situations such as earthquakes and natural disasters. Monitoring studies were performed durin…
Experimental results on a solar desiccant and evaporative cooling system equipped with wet heat exchangers
2012
An innovative solar assisted desiccant and evaporative cooling (DEC) system for building air conditioning has been installed at the Solar Laboratory of the University of Palermo. In this system, air-to-air packaged wet heat exchangers are used to maximise the exploitation of the evaporative cooling potential associated with the exhaust air stream. Results obtained are very positive, showing that DEC systems can benefit from the use of wet heat exchangers to efficiently cool the air stream after the adsorption process in the desiccant wheel, without any change in moisture content
A CCHP system fed by low enthalpy sources in Mediterranean area
2018
Climate change and energy consumption increasingly call for a better use of energy sources. Renewable sources are still growing in the power production of many countries, so leading to the reduction of CO2 emissions. Further restrictions will be applied to the use of fossil fuels with a lot of consequences; for example, major German cities such as Stuttgart, Dusseldorf and Hamburg are all contemplating bans related to diesel pollution, and on the other hand some of the biggest car producers - FCA, Toyota, etc. - are planning to stop the diesel engines production in a few years. At the same time, some restrictions are applied also to many refrigerating fluids, in order of firstly limiting th…

A brine evaporative cooler/concentrator for autonomous thermal desalination units
2011
In recent years growing attention has been paid to the problem of brine disposal due to the raising awareness of significant environmental issues related to the use of desalination processes for fresh water production. This is particularly relevant when desalination units are located in remote sites, characterised by major complexity in the construction and management of intake and outfall structures. In the present work a novel device, named brine evaporative cooler/concentrator (BECC, patent pending), has been developed for coupling with small-scale thermal desalination plants in order to reduce the problem of brine disposal. Such device fulfils two different functions: i) cooling of the …
Crushing of interstellar gas clouds in supernova remnants. I. The role of thermal conduction and radiative losses
2005
We model the hydrodynamic interaction of a shock wave of an evolved supernova remnant with a small interstellar gas cloud like the ones observed in the Cygnus loop and in the Vela SNR. We investigate the interplay between radiative cooling and thermal conduction during cloud evolution and their effect on the mass and energy exchange between the cloud and the surrounding medium. Through the study of two cases characterized by different Mach numbers of the primary shock (M = 30 and 50, corresponding to a post-shock temperature $T\approx 1.7\times 10^6$ K and $\approx 4.7\times 10^6$ K, respectively), we explore two very different physical regimes: for M = 30, the radiative losses dominate the…
