The aim of the paper is to deepen the cognitive analysis of the coastal “Torreggiamento” of the province of Salerno, focusing not so much on individual products, but rather on the entire defence system of the coastal territory in the Viceregal era. It is a dense network of towers, located in careful strategic points, with the purpose to control the coast and identify on time the pirate attacks. Through the analysis and comparison of ancient maps, got until now, we want focus the attention on the visual communication between the towers, or on the “dialogue” that entertain each other the different artefacts. Variable kinematics models for multilòayered smart plates

Families of layer-wise and equivalent single layer advanced finite elements for the geometrically nonlinear analysis of smart multilayered plates are formulated in a unified framework. The proposed modeling strategy reduces the multifield problems to an effective mechanical plate by the condensation of the electromechanical state into the plate kinematics, which is assumed as a variable order expansion along the plate thickness. Numerical results are presented to validate the proposed modeling approach and finite elements and to investigate their features.
Failing to Provide Public Goods: Why the Afghan Army Did Not Fight

The theory of public goods is mainly about the difficulty in paying for them. Our question here is this: Why might public goods not be provided, even if funding is available? We use the Afghan Army as our case study. We explore this issue using a simple model of a public good that can be provided through collective action and peer pressure, by modeling the self-organization of a group (the Afghan Army) as a mechanism design problem. We consider two kinds of transfer subsidies from an external entity such as the U.S. government. One is a Pigouvian subsidy that simply pays the salaries, rewarding individuals who provide effort. Mapping soil water content under sparse vegetation and changeable sky conditions: comparison of two thermal inertia approaches

A critical analysis of a thermal inertia approach to map surface soil water content on bare and sparsely vegetated soils by means of remotely sensed data is reported. The study area is an experimental field located in Barrax, Spain. In situ data were acquired within the Barrax 2011 research project. An advanced hyperspectral scanner airborne imager provides images in the visible/near-infrared and thermal infrared bands. Images were acquired both in day and night times by the Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial between 12th and 13th of June 2011.
