On MR Differential with Limited Slip

Design of a magnetorheological (MR) sports car differential is presented in this paper, with the aim of the total mass reduction and the torque maintenance. The torque output is controlled by adjusting the applied magnetic field. The nominal output torque of the differential is derived by using Bingham plastic constitutive model; the choice of the materials occurs to minimize the thickness of the circuit, but preliminary sizing based on electromagnetic theory does not lead to satisfactory results. The Reinforcement Effect of Strain Gauges Embedded in Low Modulus Material

The reinforcement effect of electrical resistance strain gauges is well-described in the literature, especially for strain gauges installed on surface. This paper considers the local reinforcement effect of strain gauges embedded within low Young modulus materials. In particular, by using a simple theoretical model, already used for strain gauges installed on the surface, it proposes a simple formula that allows the user to evaluate the local reinforcement effect of a generic strain gauge embedded on plastics, polymer composites, etc. The theoretical analysis has been integrated by numerical and experimental analyses, which confirmed the reliability of the proposed model.

Study of the reliability of internal combustion engines by application of a Weibull model in bands

The performance of 1,6 l four-valve Otto cycle engines is examined in this paper from the point of view of excessive consumption of lubricating oil. Three failure bands were recognized, at low, medium, and high distance traveled, each one obtained from a sample of 15 vehicles. A “Weibull model in bands” was applied; we obtained a satisfactory result from the point of view of reliability and applied the method to several types of motor vehicle. FMEA analysis of a sample permitted identification of the principal causes of unevenness in cylinder surfaces and an evaluation of the methods of machining required to correct this unevenness.
