Politically exposed persons: AML, taking the profit out of corruption and problems for the banks

2008

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to show how political corruption may be combated through measures aimed at making it less profitable and more subjected to public controls via banking reports of all relevant deposits.Design/methodology/approach – The paper provides a brief description of a few European legal Systems, Italian in particular.Findings – The paper finds that organized crime can only be efficiently tackled and impoverished of its economic enticements if political, institutional and economical complicities are publicly exposed and forced to be halted; while society, and younger generations in particular, are made fully aware that the embrace mafia tries to impose on them is …

An economic perspective on crime, its costs, crime fighting and rehabilitation efforts

2010

This study will examine the economic issues surrounding crime and reintegration measures aimed at prisoners, particularly but not exclusively in Germany. To do so it will be necessary to give an overview about the crime and crime-fighting situation in Germany. The focus is on violent and street crime. White collar crime will be mentioned only briefly. The starting point will be to examine the cost of crime and the problems concerning its measurement. These include for example the economic costs of murder or the largely ignored cost of rehabilitating the victims of crimes such as rape. They often suffer from severe trauma. Further it will prove necessary to add the indirect, immaterial costs…

Heritage Destruction in Syria and Northern Iraq: Which is the Applicable Law?

2021

The paper aims at reconstructing the applicable legal framework to the widespread destruction of cultural heritage. At first, a legal classification of the conflict under international humanitarian law is provided, with the aim to identify the applicable law. In the second part of the paper, the problem of heritage destruction in Syria is dealt under a double perspective: (i) framing the obligations and potential responsibility fo States (the Syrian Arab Republic and eventually other foreign States involved in the hostilities); and (ii) individual criminal responsibility arising for the perpetrated acts of destruction of cultural heritage.

W zwalczaniu przestępczości dotyczącej VAT, wyróżnia się trzy podstawowe problemy. Pierwszy związany jest z prawidłowością analizy kryminalnej zgromadzonych dowodów i możliwości jej wykorzystania. Problem drugi obejmuje kwestie współpracy międzynarodowej w wymianie informacji. Problem trzeci powstaje w wyniku stosowanych przez przestępców taktyk opóźniających wykrycie przestępstwa.

Shooting down the price: Evidence from Mafia homicides and housing prices

2022

In this paper, we estimate the effect of the homicides by the Camorra, the Neapolitan Mafia, on housing prices in Naples. The study develops on a unique panel data set at the administrative district level for the period 2002–2018 of geo-localized homicides involving innocent victims (denoted as IVH), which are treated as exogenous shocks that negatively affect housing demand. We find that the occurrence of such homicides causes a decrease in housing prices in the range of 2.5–3.8 percentage points. This effect decreases with the distance from an IVH and over time. These results are robust to the utilization of different econometric specifications and to the considerations of possible confou…

Child Abuse, Neglect, and Violent Criminal Behavior in a Midwest Metropolitan Area of the United States, 1967-1988

1991

These data examine the relationships between childhood abuse and/or neglect and later criminal and violent criminal behavior. In particular, the data focus on whether being a victim of violence and/or neglect in early childhood leads to being a criminal offender in adolescence or early adulthood and whether a relationship exists between childhood abuse or neglect and arrests as a juvenile, arrests as an adult, and arrests for violent offenses. For this data collection, adult and juvenile criminal histories of sampled cases with backgrounds of abuse or neglect were compared to those of a matched control group with no official record of abuse or neglect. Variables contained in Part 1 include …
