How viable are spanish credit cooperatives after recent bank capitalization and restructuring regulations?
2011
Over the past three years, major reforms have been approved in Spain in order to restructure the banking sector. The purpose of these reforms has been to reinforce the solvency of credit institutions through recapitalization and integration into larger organizations. The credit cooperatives have not presented any solvency problems which would justify these measures being applied to them. The problem that the financial authorities see in their case is their limited size. As a result, the credit cooperatives are immersed in an integration process which is not revolving around the Banco Cooperativo Español (BCE) or the Spanish Association of Rural Savings Banks, as might be expected, but is ta…
STRATEGIC ROLE OF ACTIVITY IN THE EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT OF A COMPANY FROM THE SME SECTOR IN THE ERA OF GLOBAL CRISIS
2012
The year 2009 ended in Poland and other EU countries under the sign of the Great Depression, which began on the other side of the ocean but it covered almost the whole world. The most vulnerable to the crisis turned out to be companies from the SME sector which, in the European Union SMEs represent 99.8% companies operating within the Union, and their sales account for about 56.2% total revenues. EU small and medium-sized companies employ more than 66% workforce and they are the ones most heavily affected by the crisis. In Poland the company from the SME sector accounts for over 90% of all businesses operating in our country. And they were faced in front of the huge challenge which was how …
Crisis preparedness through co-operation between municipalities and non-governmental organizations
2016

Samsung and Volkswagen Crisis Communication in Facebook and Twitter : A Comparative Study
2017
Since September 2015 at least two major crises have emerged where major industrial companies producing consumer products have been involved. In September 2015 diesel cars manufactured by Volkswagen turned out to be equipped with cheating software that caused NO2 and other emission values to be reduced to acceptable levels while tested from the real, unacceptable values in normal use. In August 2016 reports began to appear that the battery of a new smart phone produced by Samsung, Galaxy Note7, could begin to burn, or even explode, while the device was on. In Nov. 2016 also 34 washing machine models were reported to have caused damages due to disintegration. In all cases, the companies have …
Managing Stress During the COVID-19 Pandemic and Beyond : Reappraisal and Mindset Approaches
2020
Abstract The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is a truly global public health crisis with substantive human, social, and economic costs. The pandemic and the associated preventive ‘lockdown’ measures have also given rise to a parallel mental health crisis, with elevated levels of chronic stress observed in the general population. Stress levels are also likely to be higher among at-risk groups such as those who have become employed or are on furlough, those in essential services with higher risk of exposure, and those from underserved communities. Development of efficacious means to assist individuals in effectively managing their during the pandemic and beyond is an impera…
Learning to survive amidst nested crises: can the coronavirus pandemic help us change educational practices to prepare for the impending eco-crisis?
2021
The ongoing ecological crisis and the more recent Coronavirus crisis challenge the grand narrative of Enlightenment that human beings are ‘masters of nature’. For millennia, human social learning has allowed Homo sapiens to outpace most of our competitor creatures and live a comfortable life, but this competitive success has resulted in cataclysmic failure for the ecosystem. However, people’s unique ability to learn gives us hope that we can overcome the nested crises, or learn to live with them. What is required is not more knowledge, but instead, collective learning to change practices, institutionalized in educational processes. Drawing on the theory of practice architectures, this paper…
CBRN Communication Scorecard
2015
The CBRN Communication Scorecard is a tool to facilitate preparedness for crisis communication in the cases of CBRN terrorism incidents. In the introduction the development of the scorecard is explained. In the next section a user guide is provided. As the role of communication experts in crisis management is not always clear, this is further explained in the last section. Finally, the scorecard itself is presented. nonPeerReviewed
A Historical Analysis of Media Practices and Technologies in Protest Movements : A Review of Crisis and Critique by Anne Kaun
2017
Dr. Anne Kaun’s book, Crisis and Critique: A Brief History of Media Participation in Times of Crisis (London: Zed Books, 2016, 131 pp., ISBN: 978-1-78360-736-5), is a concise but comprehensive analysis of the changing media practices and technologies in protest movements. The book overviews the topic within the context of major economic crises and scrutinises three richly detailed case studies in the United States: (a) the unemployed workers’ movement during the Great Depression in the 1930s, (b) the tenants’ rent strike movement of the early 1970s, and (c) the Occupy Wall Street movement following the Great Recession of 2008. Kaun begins her book with an introduction t…
THE IMPACT OF THE ECONOMIC CRISIS ON THE ROMANIAN LABOR MARKET - A REGIONAL ANALYSIS
2012
The global financial recession reconfigured the economical structures of many countries and in this context the labor markets all around the world faced major salary cuts and job losses. The Romanian economy wasn`t an exception, and for a better understanding of its labor structures we have analyzed the interactions between some of the most representative and measurable indicators using a regional econometric model. The results show that the dynamics of the labor market changed once the economic crisis was installed and are still continuing to modify since the magnitude of this global phenomena was very powerful.
