Italian Heroines: Literature, Gender, and the Construction of the Nation

2019

Scholarship on Italian nationhood has historically focused on heroes rather than on heroines, in line with the established gendered dialectical relationship between the female nation (who nurtures those who fight for her), and the male patriot, who both adores and possesses her. However, it is argued that Italian literary heroines prove at least as productive as heroes, if not more, when it comes to generating alternative views on the nation. This essay offers an introduction to a themed issue that aims to fill this scholarly gap in relation to ideas about the Italian nation and nationhood.

2021

The "upside-down street law", as I call the educational experiments that I have conducted over the course of several years, intends to challenge the assumption of the vertical monodirectionality of knowledge. How? Creating a more complex field of circulation and production of knowledge, in which the worn-out spatial metaphors of high and low culture, as well as of what is counted inside or outside the legitimate learning space, are questioned. This way of teaching law starts from an analysis of the power relations present in a certain context. And it proposes educational interventions that deconstruct these relationships by reassembling them otherwise. In the article are told some this expe…

On critical behaviour in generalized Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations

2016

International audience; An asymptotic description of the formation of dispersive shock waves in solutions to the generalized Kadomtsev–Petviashvili (KP) equation is conjectured. The asymptotic description based on a multiscales expansion is given in terms of a special solution to an ordinary differential equation of the Painlevé I hierarchy. Several examples are discussed numerically to provide strong evidence for the validity of the conjecture. The numerical study of the long time behaviour of these examples indicates persistence of dispersive shock waves in solutions to the (subcritical) KP equations, while in the supercritical KP equations a blow-up occurs after the formation of the disp…

In situ characterization of the high pressure – high temperature melting curve of platinum

2019

AbstractIn this work, the melting line of platinum has been characterized both experimentally, using synchrotron X-ray diffraction in laser-heated diamond-anvil cells, and theoretically, using ab initio simulations. In the investigated pressure and temperature range (pressure between 10 GPa and 110 GPa and temperature between 300 K and 4800 K), only the face-centered cubic phase of platinum has been observed. The melting points obtained with the two techniques are in good agreement. Furthermore, the obtained results agree and considerably extend the melting line previously obtained in large-volume devices and in one laser-heated diamond-anvil cells experiment, in which the speckle method wa…

Towards which expressive horizons?

2012

Today’s explosive developments in digital technology have also affected architecture and urban landscape. The new possibilities opened up by digital simulation have led to an increasingly strategic approach to planning, an approach based on generating scenarios, which thus represents a radical departure from traditional planning. But, up to now, what is the prevalent trend in architecture? Can we talk yet in term of language? Or have the extreme freedom in design destroyed the style? In this paper we present an analysis of the contemporary architecture, strongly influenced by digital technologies, through an objective analysis of several case-studies and we show the first result of this in …

Valentina Polcini, Dino Buzzati and Anglo-American Culture. The Re-use of Visual and Narrative Text in his Fantastic Fiction”, Forme, strategie e mut…

2016

Moving the Limits of Representation: Invention, sequel, continuation in Buzzati' Miracles

2016

The Miracles of Morel Valley by Dino Buzzati are actually a sequel of a previous work of the author . The beginning and the end of the last Buzzati’s iconotext are brought backwards and forwards to prolong the phases of the artistic genesis and to substantiate in the double mediality its raison d’etre .
