Age-associated oxidative damage leads to absence of γ-cystathionase in over 50% of rat lenses: Relevance in cataractogenesis

2004

Oxidative damage to lens proteins and glutathione depletion play a major role in the development of senile cataract. We previously found that a deficiency in gamma-cystathionase activity may be responsible for glutathione depletion in old lenses. The aims of this study were: (1) to investigate the mechanism that causes the age-related deficiency in gamma-cystathionase activity in the eye lens, and (2) to determine the role of gamma-cystathionase deficiency in cataractogenesis. Two populations of old rats were found, one (56%) whose lenses lacked gamma-cystathionase activity and the rest that exhibited detectable enzyme activity. gamma-Cystathionase protein was absent in lenses from old rats…

Practical strategies for stable operation of HFF-QCM in continuous air flow

2013

Currently there are a few fields of application using quartz crystal microbalances (QCM). Because of environmental conditions and insufficient resolution of the microbalance, chemical sensing of volatile organic compounds in an open system was as yet not possible. In this study we present strategies on how to use 195 MHz fundamental quartz resonators for a mobile sensor platform to detect airborne analytes. Commonly the use of devices with a resonant frequency of about 10 MHz is standard. By increasing the frequency to 195 MHz the frequency shift increases by a factor of almost 400. Unfortunately, such kinds of quartz crystals tend to exhibit some challenges to obtain a reasonable signal-to…

High-Pressure Phase Diagram and Superionicity of Alkaline Earth Metal Difluorides

2018

We study the high-pressure–high-temperature phase diagram and superionicity of alkaline earth metal (AEM) difluorides (AF2, A = Ca, Sr, Ba) with first-principles simulation methods. We find that the superionic behavior of SrF2 and BaF2 at high pressures differ appreciably from that previously reported for CaF2 [Phys. Rev. Lett. 2014, 113, 235902]. Specifically, the critical superionic temperature of SrF2 and BaF2 in the low-pressure cubic fluorite phase is not reduced by effect of compression, and the corresponding high-pressure orthorhombic contunnite phases become superionic at elevated temperatures. We get valuable microscopic insights into the superionic features of AEM difluorides in b…

All-Optical frequency Shifter in a Periodically Poled Lithium Tantalate Waveguide

2011

A frequency shifting device is fabricated and tested in a congruent Lithium Tantalate waveguide. Periodic poling for quasi-phase-matching and channels for operation in the near-infrared C-band were obtained, demonstrating a two-stage parametric conversion.

Enantiodifferentiation of acyclic phosphonium salts in chiral liquid crystalline solutions

2006

Abstract The enantiodifferentiation of acyclic phosphonium salts bearing a stereogenic centre, whether on the phosphorus atom or on one of its substituents, was investigated by 2 H–{ 1 H}, 13 C–{ 1 H} and 31 P–{ 1 H} NMR in chiral liquid crystals composed of a polypeptide dissolved in an organic solvent. For the first time, the enantiomers of P-chirogenic phosphorus compounds were discriminated in these anisotropic media, affording good to excellent separation of the signals, allowing the determination of their proportion. While 31 P–{ 1 H} NMR spectra showed no chiral separation, 2 H–{ 1 H} NMR was efficient in the enantiodifferentiation of an isotopically labelled compound. Better still, …

On the mechanism of the interaction between oxygen and close-packed single-crystal aluminum surfaces

2003

Abstract Using periodic first principles simulations we investigate the interaction of oxygen molecules with both regular Al(111) and Al(001) surfaces as well as a stepped Al(111) substrate. The limitation of this approach is the use of thin metallic slabs with a limited range for their coverage by adsorbed oxygen. The advantage is the detailed modeling that is possible at an atomic level. On the regular Al(111) surface, we have been able to follow the oxidation process from the approach of O 2 molecules to the surface, through the chemisorption and absorption of O atoms, up to the formation of first Al 2 O 3 formula units. An energetically feasible mechanism for the formation of these Al 2…

Optically detected magnetic resonance studied via the blue luminescence of Ti-doped

1998

The UV-excited blue and green luminescence bands of Ti:sapphire are characterized by ODMR. These emission bands are attributed to two centres, which show very similar properties and are created as a result of a charge-transfer transition of an electron from to ions. In both centres, the d electron of and the hole of are strongly coupled and form triplet states. Doublet systems can be ruled out as sources of the blue-green luminescence. The angular dependence of the ODMR can be explained with an appropriate spin Hamiltonian assuming orthorhombic local symmetry. The orientation of the principal axes of the g-tensor and the crystal-field tensor, found for both centres, suggest that the hole is…

On the formation of inclusion complexes at the solid/liquid interface of anchored temperature-responsive PNIPAAM diblock copolymers with γ-cyclodextr…

2017

The thermal responsive behavior of adsorbed layers of diblock copolymers of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAM) and poly((3-acrylamidopropyl)trimethylammonium chloride) (PAMPTMA(+)) with γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) at the solid/liquid interface has been investigated using three in situ techniques: null ellipsometry, quartz–crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring, and neutron reflectometry. The measurements provided information about the adsorbed amounts, the layer thickness, hydration and viscoelastic properties, and the interfacial structure and composition. The copolymers adsorb to silica with the cationic PAMPTMA(+) blocks sitting as anchors in a flat conformation and the PNIPAAM ch…

Photonic-crystal silicon-nanocluster light-emitting device

2006

We report on enhanced light extraction from a light-emitting device based on amorphous silicon nanoclusters, suitable for very-large-scale integration, and operating at room temperature. Standard low-cost optical lithography is employed to fabricate a two-dimensional photonic crystal onto the device. We measured a vertical emission with the extracted radiation enhanced by over a factor of 4, without the aid of any buried reflector. These achievements demonstrate that a cost-effective exploitation of photonic crystals is indeed within the reach of semiconductor industry and open the way to a new generation of nanostructured silicon devices in which photonic and electronic functions are integ…
