Compression-induced anti-nematic order in glassy and semicrystalline polymers

2020

We provide new insights into the molecular origin of the asymmetry between uniaxial tensile and compressive deformation of glassy and semicrystalline polymers using molecular dynamics simulations. The difference between the two responses strongly depends on the chain length and is the largest at intermediate chain lengths. Irrespective of chain length, the intra- and interchain organization of polymers under extension and compression are remarkably distinct. The chains align along the tensile axis leading to a global nematic order of the bonds and end-to-end vectors, whereas compression reorganizes polymers to lie in planes perpendicular to the compressive axis resulting in the emergence of…

Quartz Crystal Microbalance for Bioanalytical Applications

2001

The quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) was first introduced as a mass sensor in gas phase and in vacuum. Since oscillator circuits capable of exciting shear vibrations of quartz resonators under liquid load have been developed, the QCM became accepted as a new powerful technique to monitor adsorption processes at solid/liquid interfaces in chemical and biological research rendering the method an attractive low-cost alternative for bioanalytic applications. In the last decade, adsorption of biomolecules on functionalized surfaces turned out to be one of the paramount applications of piezoelectric transducers comprising the interaction of DNA and RNA with complementary strands, specific recogn…

Synthesis and phase behaviour of liquid-crystalline side group polyesters

1990

Abstract Several series of liquid-crystalline side group polymers with a polyester backbone structure have been synthesized using mesogenic diethylmalonate and 1,3-propanediol derivatives. The structures of the polymer backbone and the mesogenic units have been varied systematically. As shown by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing microscopy and X-ray diffraction, the side group polyesters exhibit nematic and/or smectic mesophases. Polyesters synthesized from mesogenic diethylmalonate derivatives can tolerate long non-mesogenic segments in the polymer main chain without losing their liquid crystal properties. X-ray studies suggest that some of the smectic polymers exhibit interdig…

Liquid Crystalline Elastomers

1989

Today, material science is directed towards the development of multifunctional and oriented structures. One example of such supramolecular systems are liquid crystalline (LC) elastomers which combine the properties of LC phases (the combination of order and mobility) with rubber elasticity, one of the most typical polymer properties. Their most outstanding characteristic is their mechanical orientability; strains as small as 20% are enough to obtain a perfectly oriented LC monodomain. This orientability, if LC elastomers with chiral phases are used, leads, for example, to elastomers with chiral smectic C* phases which are likely to show piezo-electric behavior.

Nematic elastomers: From a microscopic model to macroscopic elasticity theory

2008

A Landau theory is constructed for the gelation transition in cross-linked polymer systems possessing spontaneous nematic ordering, based on symmetry principles and the concept of an order parameter for the amorphous solid state. This theory is substantiated with help of a simple microscopic model of cross-linked dimers. Minimization of the Landau free energy in the presence of nematic order yields the neoclassical theory of the elasticity of nematic elastomers and, in the isotropic limit, the classical theory of isotropic elasticity. These phenomenological theories of elasticity are thereby derived from a microscopic model, and it is furthermore demonstrated that they are universal mean-fi…

2H NMR studies of phase behaviour and molecular motions of doped discotic liquid-crystalline systems

1990

Abstract A discotic triphenylene monomer as well as a dimer and a main chain polymer, all substituted with heptyloxy side groups, were doped with an electron acceptor (2,4,7-trinitrofluorenone (TNF)) to give charge transfer complexes. These doped systems were aligned in a magnetic field, thus proving their liquid crystallinity. 2H NMR measurements show that the electron acceptor molecules are incorporated into the columns built of triphenylene cores. In the charge transfer complex with the triphenylene monomer almost all the electron acceptor molecules stack in the columns even close to the clearing temperature T 1, while for the dimer and especially for the polymer a significant fraction o…
