Synthesis of New Functionalized Discotic Liquid Crystals for Photoconducting Aplications

1996

Abstract The columnar structure of discotic liquid crystals has been shown to be well suited for electronic transport parallel to the columnar axis. To tailor the processibility and mesophase behavior of such materials, several hydroxytriphenylene derivatives were synthesized. These hydroxytriphenylenes can be converted into oligomers, networks or polymers. Further, they can be reduced to arenes which posses reactive sites for classical aromatic substitutions. A number of mixed tail triphenylene derivatives and fluorescent, low symmetry triphenylene discotic liquid crystals were synthesized and characterized.

Fabrication of Robust High-Quality ORMOCER® Inverse Opals

2006

The nanostructuring of ORMOCER® to form inverse opals is described. For this purpose a polymer opal is used as a template and infiltrated with liquid ORMOCER®. After photopolymerization of the resin the host opal is dissolved in tetrahydrofuran and an ORMOCER® inverse opal is obtained. It shows excellent periodicity (by SEM) and optical properties to reveal a high degree of face centered cubic order. This replication process leads to a nanostructured photonic crystal with the outstanding mechanical properties of ORMOCER® and high temperature stability up to 350 °C.

Functional Liquid Crystalline Polymers: Ferroelectric Polymers and Liquid Crystalline Elastomers and Ionomers

1994

Abstract The incorporation of different functional groups in liquid crystalline polymers opens the way to a variety of interesting new materials, which may be used for non-linear optics, as piezo-elements or as two-phasic composite materials.

Tuning the Properties of Photonic Films from Polymer Beads by Chemistry

2002

This paper describes the preparation of monodisperse colloids from various methacrylates. These colloids sediment well on glass slides and formin the dried statelarge three-dimensional face-centered cubic photonic crystal films with Bragg reflection in the visible region. Depending on crystallization conditions, the domain sizes vary between 50 and 300 μm. By cross-linking the polymer within the colloids, it is possible to increase the thermal stability of the polymeric photonic structure tremendously (up to 1 h at 200 °C). These photonic structures soften above Tg (rubbery photonic structure), but they cannot fuse. Cross-linked colloids from poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) can either thermal…

Liquid crystalline phases from polymer functionalised semiconducting nanorods

2008

The orientation of semiconducting nanomaterials is a hot topic in optoelectronic applications. Liquid crystallinity offers the potential to orient inorganic anisotropic nanorods, if they can be solubilised sufficiently as realised by polymer functionalisation. In this work we functionalised TiO2, SnO2, ZnO and CdTe nanorods with PMMA, PS and PDEGMEMA (poly(diethylene glycol monomethyl ether) methacrylate) diblock copolymers containing anchor groupsvia grafting-to. The block copolymers were synthesised by RAFT polymerisation (PDI ≈ 1.2) via reactive ester diblock copolymers, which were functionalised later with anchor units polymer-analogously. The surface coverage of the nanorods (determine…

Positron Annihilation in Alkali Halides at Low Temperatures

1986

We report on low-temperature positron studies for pure, single crystals of the alkali halides KCl, NaCl and NaF. Strong temperature dependences are observed in the lifetime and angular correlation measurements in the temperature range 10–300 K. Delocalized para-positronium is observed at low temperatures in the three crystals. The broadening, with rising temperature, of the narrow peak in the angular correlation curve can be accounted for by the self-trapping model of positronium. The results are discussed in the light of this model, in terms of positronium localization at imperfections and in terms of positron interactions with imperfections created in the spur of the positron. The increas…

Effects of pressure and of thermal history on the structural phase transition of KCN

1992

The cubic-noncubic structural phase transition of a KCN single crystal is studied as a function of thermal history and of hydrostatic pressure up to 2 kbar. The standard sequence of phases is cubic-monoclinic-orthorhombic on cooling and orthorhombic-cubic on heating. The monoclinic phase is also absent in first cooling runs at low pressures (p≦250 bar). The width of the monoclinic field inp, T phase diagram is increased in second cooling runs. The effects are discussed in terms of a martensitic transformation behavior and random strain fields.

Chemical modification of Topaz surfaces

1999

In chemisorption, one is typically faced with the problem that the two-dimensional structure of the organic layer does not match the structure of the inorganic substrate. This work describes the first steps toward an induced epitaxial correlation of organic compounds on an inorganic surface. The idea of this work was to use a single crystal with a two-dimensional surface structure, Topaz (001), that matches an alkyl chain lattice better than existing substrates. X-ray reflectivity and FTIR experiments prove the surface modification of the Topaz, which is probably an etherification of the reactive OH-groups on the Topaz (001) surface.

Laponite clay in homopolymer and tri-block copolymer matrices

2007

Macromolecule/laponite nanomaterials were studied by DSC and X-ray diffraction techniques. The matrices are poly(ethylene) glycols at various molecular masses and poly(ethylene oxides)-poly(propylene oxides)-poly(ethylene oxides) tri-block copolymers. The latter were tuned by modulating the molecular masses, at constant hydrophilic/hydrophobic ratio, and the hydrophilicity. For all the investigated systems, the enthalpy of melting (ΔH m) is nearly constant up to a given composition thereafter it increases monotonically reaching the value of the pure macromolecule. We proposed a model to interpret the DSC data. Briefly, it was invoked a mechanism of interaction following which some segments …

A study of the enolization of some alkyl ketones in lyomesophases formed by alkylammonium surfactants

1988

The kinetics of enolization of acetone, 3-pentanone, and 6-undecanone have been studied in lyotropic systems in the isotropic, nematic, and lamellar phases. The data, analysed in terms of spontaneous and acid-catalyzed rate constants, do not show any relevant influence of the physical nature of the phase. Effects are instead observed in relation to the length of the alkyl chains of the ketones and the type of the amphiphilic molecule. 6-undecanone has a surprising effect in stabilizing ordered mesophases.
