Strain‐induced compression of smectic layers in free‐standing liquid crystalline elastomer films

The deformation of oriented smectic liquid crystal elastomer films with smectic layers parallel to the film surface was studied using optical reflectometry and small angle X‐ray diffraction. Reflectometry data show that in the chosen material, in‐plane strain causes a change in the optical thickness of the free‐standing films. Small angle X‐ray scattering was used to explore the molecular origin of this effect. The X‐ray scattering data confirm that the change in optical thickness originates from the compression of the individual smectic layers. Liquid Structure of Trihexyltetradecylphosphonium Chloride at Ambient Temperature: An X-ray Scattering and Simulation Study

We report on an experimental and simulation study done on a representative room temperature ionic liquid, namely tetradecyltrihexylphosphonium chloride, at ambient conditions. The study was conducted using small and wide angle X-ray scattering and molecular dynamics simulations. Both approaches converge in indicating that this material is characterized by the existence of strong P-Cl interactions (with characteristic distances between 3.5 and 5.0 Å) and by the occurrence of nanoscale segregation, despite the symmetric nature of the cation and similarly to other room temperature ionic liquids. Inclusion ratio based estimator for the mean length of the boolean line segment model with an application to nanocrystalline cellulose

A novel estimator for estimating the mean length of fibres is proposed for censored data observed in square shaped windows. Instead of observing the fibre lengths, we observe the ratio between the intensity estimates of minus-sampling and plus-sampling. It is well-known that both intensity estimators are biased. In the current work, we derive the ratio of these biases as a function of the mean length assuming a Boolean line segment model with exponentially distributed lengths and uniformly distributed directions. Multifunctionality in spin crossover materials

Abstract One of the most important trends in the spin crossover (SCO) field is focused on the synthesis of new molecule-based functional materials in which the SCO properties may be combined with other physical or chemical properties in a synergic fashion. The current stage of investigations regarding interplay and synergic effects between SCO, magnetic coupling, liquid crystalline properties, host–guest interactions, non-linear optical properties, electrical conductivity, and ligand isomerization is highlighted and discussed.
Growth of large liquid crystalline domains of phospholipids at air-water interfaces

Abstract The fusion of condensed phase domains in a fluid environment in monolayers is studied. A system of electrodes permits the non-invasive and predetermined movement of single domains while the film is observed by fluorescence microscopy. Two domains fuse when they are brought into contact with special positions of their borderlines. The experiment yields information about the molecular structure of the domains and allows us to fabricate very large domains. The equilibrium size is estimated and verified.

Spin crossover in iron(II) complexes: Recent advances

In this review article, several representative multifunctional SCO materials exhibiting interplay/synergy between the spin transition and magnetic coupling or liquid crystalline properties together with the present pioneering works on nano-structuration of SCO materials are illustrated. As the Mossbauer spectroscopy has been decisive in the study of the physical properties of these multifunctional materials, special attention is given to their corresponding Mossbauer investigations.
Closed foldable capsular rings

A new foldable capsular tension and bending ring system with a sharp-edged design is described. The closed foldable capsular rings (CFCR) consist of 8 hydrophobic and 8 hydrophilic ring segments. The CFCRs have a 9.2 mm minimum overall diameter. The CFCRs were inserted using various cartridge systems or a two-folded technique with a forceps. The CFCRs were implanted after phacoemulsification through a small (1.6 to 3.2 mm) incision in 104 human adult eyes without intraoperative complications. No postoperative complications such as capsule folds or inward bending were observed over a 6-month follow-up. Posterior capsule opacification was minimal or absent in all eyes.

This paper analyzes the effect of different storage methods on the transparency of pig crystalline lens. Methods: A spectral transmission curve (from 220 to 780 nm) for the crystalline lens was determined experimentally after storage in different conditions: saline solution, formalin, castor oil, and freezing at -80°C.
