Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies on [(CH3)nNH4–n]3[Sb2Cl9] (2,3) chloroantimonates(III) in their low-temperature ferroelectric phases—structu…
2005
The structures of two ferroic chloroantimonates(III): [(CH3)2NH2]3[Sb2Cl9] (DMACA) and [(CH3)3NH]3[Sb2Cl9] (TMACA) were determined in their low-temperature phases. The structure of DMACA was investigated at 100 and 15 K, and TMACA at 15 K. The structures consist of two-dimensional inorganic layers and organic cations bound together by the N(C)–H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds. All of the organic cations in both compounds at all studied temperatures are ordered. There is no indication of the structural phase transition in the structure of DMACA below 242 K. The geometry and distortions of the [SbCl6]3– octahedra in both compounds is discussed.
Steering of a Sub-GeV electron beam through planar channeling enhanced by rechanneling
2014
We report the observation of efficient steering of a 855 MeV electron beam at MAMI (MAinzer MIkrotron) facilities by means of planar channeling and volume reflection in a bent silicon crystal. A $30.5\text{ }\text{ }\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m}$ thick plate of (211) oriented Si was bent to cause quasimosaic deformation of the (111) crystallographic planes, which were used for coherent interaction with the electron beam. The experimental results are analogous to those recorded some years ago at energy higher than 100 GeV, which is the only comparable study to date. Monte Carlo simulations demonstrated that rechanneling plays a considerable role in a particle's dynamics and hinders the spoiling…
Liposomes modified by mono- and bis-phthalocyanines: A comprehensive EPR study.
2016
The impact of selected metallophthalocyanines, featuring diverse molecular structure, upon the fluidity of liposome membranes was studied using the spin label EPR technique. The “mono”-type MPc’s (M = Zn, Sn; Pc = C32H16N8 is the phthalocyanine ligand) and sandwich LnPc2 complexes (Ln = Nd, Sm, Gd) were explored. Liposomes were obtained in a sonication process, from egg yolk lecithin (EYL) in water. TEMPO and 16-DOXYL spin labels were used to monitor the peripheral and central part of the lipid double layer, respectively, which allowed to localize the phthalocyanine additive within the bilayer, as well as to perform independent measurements of changes in fluidity upon addition thereof. All …
Shaping 1,2,4-Triazolium Fluorinated Ionic Liquid Crystals
2023
The synthesis and thermotropic behaviour of some di-alkyloxy-phenyl-1,2,4-triazolium trifluoromethane-sulfonate salts bearing a seven-carbon atom perfluoroalkyl chain on the cation is herein described. The fluorinated salts presenting a 1,2,4-triazole as a core and differing in the length of two alkyloxy chains on the phenyl ring demonstrated a typical liquid crystalline behaviour. The mesomorphic properties of this set of salts were studied by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy. The thermotropic properties are discussed on the grounds of the tuneable structures of the salts. The results showed the existence of a monotropic, columnar, liquid crystalline phase…
Modification of the Structure and Nano-Mechanical Properties of LiF Crystals Under Irradiation with Swift Heavy Ions
2011
The modifications of the structure and hardness of LiF crystals under high-fluence irradiation with MeV- and GeV-energy Au ions have been studied using nanoindentation and atomic force microscopy. The formation of ion-induced dislocations and bulk nanostructures consisting of grains with nanoscale dimensions (50 nm - 100 nm) has been observed. The structural modifications are accompanied by a strong ion-induced hardening which is related to dislocation impeding by assemblies of defect aggregates, dislocation loops of vacancy and interstitial types and grain boundaries. For MeV ions, the modifications are localized in a thin surface layer (few mm) where much higher density of deposited energ…
“SmartGlass” Obstacles for Dynamic Inducing of Light Scattering in Vision Research Experiments
2017
We describe a technique that allows control of visual stimuli quality through the use of a setup with a polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) film positioned in the optical pathway of one or both human eyes. Nowadays, PDLC films allow alteration of the resolution and contrast limits of the transmitted light due to continuous change in the light scattering that is obtained by the application of an AC electrical field. In our experimental setup, the use of a wide-aperture up to area of 20 x 15 cm2 PDLC sheet is combined with a flat-screen PC display or with a modified display emission block without its interference filter unit and with an installed individually controllable colored light-em…
Performance Enhancement of a Small Animal Positron Emission Tomograph based on Continuous Crystals and Silicon Photomultipliers
2017
2004
Recently, a new class of optical components is appeared. Its main characteristic is to be formed by a periodical sub-wavelength pattern, leading to the apparition of a spectral domain where propagation of light inside the structure is forbidden -- a photonic bandgap. This work is devoted to the study in the near- and far-field of two kinds of periodical optical components: photonic crystals (PCs) and nanostructured metallic films that exhibit the so-called enhanced transmission. First, we study two-dimensional PCs with a scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM) in collection mode. With this SNOM, we directly map the intensity distribution inside PC-based microcavities. We also evidence…
Blends of Semiflexible Polymers: Interplay of Nematic Order and Phase Separation
2021
Mixtures of semiflexible polymers with a mismatch in either their persistence lengths or their contour lengths are studied by Density Functional Theory and Molecular Dynamics simulation. Considering lyotropic solutions under good solvent conditions, the mole fraction and pressure is systematically varied for several cases of bending stiffness κ (the normalized persistence length) and chain length N. For binary mixtures with different chain length (i.e., NA=16, NB=32 or 64) but the same stiffness, isotropic-nematic phase coexistence is studied. For mixtures with the same chain length (N=32) and large stiffness disparity (κB/κA=4.9 to 8), both isotropic-nematic and nematic-nematic unmixing oc…
Exploring integration prospects of opal-based photonic crystals
2003
Different methods of functionalisation of thin opal films are discussed, including synthesis of opals on pre-patterned substrates, post-synthesis electron beam lithography, preparation of opals with heterogeneous photonic band gap structure and integrating opals with light sources. These approaches have been tested experimentally and key technological problems have been identified.
